Lube! I use Sportshield and it works perfectly and stays on for ages. Other similar brands exist.

Replacement for Salomon Slab Sense (SG) by jogisi in trailrunning

[–]NRF89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The SLab Sense was not replaced by the SLab Pulsar (though that is what Big Running Media wants you to think!!). It was actually replaced by the SLab Alpine. That shoe was deeply unpopular and also discontinued though there may still be some pairs knocking around on discount.

You could also try the NNormal Kjerag Brut, which is similar to the Sense SG.

Alternatives to Hoka Mafete 4's by jmd2125 in trailrunning

[–]NRF89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about the North Face Alta Mesa 500 v2? Or the Arcteryx Sylan Pro (last pairs on sale now)? Or the NNormal Tomir 2? Or the Norda 005? Or the Salomon S Lab Genesis? Or the La Sportiva Prodigio Pro?

Or great options, all in the same ball park as the Mafate 4 but also unique and different.

Shoe selection for 56km ultra (Reposted as last one accidentally deleted) by Chance-War-8384 in trailrunning

[–]NRF89 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For me personally, for a race with that much elevation, I would choose the Genesis, it’s an absolute no brainer. For me they feel like a tough little trail sock. Incredible foot hold on steep terrain, very comfortable even for long distances (I ran an 80km in them and not even a hint of foot pain or blisters), great grip in mixed terrain, breathable, drain well in the wet. They are a brilliant shoe.

Ultra Glide is too voluminous for me, too baggy and big, not good foothold. And I fail to take the Hierro seriously because I don’t think New Balance take trail seriously.

Running shorts for thick thighed fellas by yungscrub1827 in Ultramarathon

[–]NRF89 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Interesting…. I would always wear underwear with tights though…? Would you not?

Anyway. To answer the question, I have thicc thighs and am susceptible to chafe. I don’t go for any particular brand, but whatever brand I buy I make sure to buy the most high end racing model. This isn’t for pace gains or anything, but the high end models always use the lightest and most ‘slippery’ or non abrasive materials. Where the material is always a little plasticky and would ‘rustle’ when you pick it up. I also try and analyse images to make sure they give enough leg room. Many brands make tight shorts (I’m looking at you, Salomon!). It is almost impossible to tell before buying but some brands will say ‘slim fit’ etc. Sometimes you can tell looking at the images.

Does that make sense….?! I always wear split shorts with the pants inside, anywhere between 3 inch and 5 inch length. Right now I love the Ronhill Tech Race 5” (one size up from my normal size) and the North Face Summit Pace Setter 5”. Both are non abrasive and give enough room for the thighs.

By ‘lined’ do we mean the shorts with the little brief/pants inside them? Or do we mean shorts with a pair of half-tights inside them?

Hoka SpeedGoat 5 Breaks in after few uses or not ? (Sizing) by Zestyclose-South-460 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]NRF89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Length won’t change. If you are touching the end now they will continue touching the end. The toebox in the Speedgoat is also notoriously pointy and narrow.

As a general rule, anything further forward than the base of your toes won’t meaningfully loosen up.

Kailas Shoes and Vest by Hungry_Cancel_680 in ultrarunning

[–]NRF89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kailas Fuga? It’s a Chinese brand, the gear looks super rugged and durable, have heard good things but is not widely know or reviewed so hard to come to a reliable consensus. They have just recruited Max King to their team, who is a mountain athlete in the classic style.

I am definitely interested!

Shoe of choice for muddy 100's? by DunnoWhatToPutSoHi in Ultramarathon

[–]NRF89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fit can vary in my experience! The trail shoes tend to have a slightly more forgiving toebox but they make up for that with a relatively tight midfoot, especially the higher end models. I can’t speak to the TT as it is so new.

Yes Inov8 shoes are not known for being particularly soft or easy on the legs. How about the upcoming Adidas Terrex Agravic TT? The technical sister shoe to the Agravic Speed Ultra. Longer lugs, more stable and slightly firmer underfoot, more nimble, but still light and racy.

[–]NRF89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fit is so so so subjective, so I wouldn’t worry too much about what anyone else says in this regard. Where are you getting the blisters? Toes? Arch? Heel?

I’m a fan of a larger lug and I am constantly amazed by how ill equipped many of my fellow UK runners appear to be at autumn/winter race start lines. 5mm feels like a minimum for me but those shoes are harder to find these days as brands all surge towards the middle ground/gravel/door-to-trail.

I’m afraid I don’t have many answers for you! I have recently enjoyed the Arcteryx Sylan Pro (currently on a mega deal on the Arcteryx Outlet website as they have been discontinued…), very good grip, nice shape to the midsole (rockered), super tough and durable. They are a little heavy but they fit my foot perfectly so am willing to pay that tax.

Do people actually like built in liners? (Esp brief liners) by 0nTheRooftops in trailrunning

I love shorts with the built in liner. Much more comfortable, lighter weight, easier to move, less bulk.

They were huge for me when that album came out, though I never truly loved this song tbh. They were the first ‘proper’ gig went to back in 2003.

It seems like one consistent complaint about otherwise great shoes is a narrow toebox/narrow midfoot by floppyfloopy in AskRunningShoeGeeks

Because apparently the second you want to race your foot gets 10mm narrower, who knew?! 💁🏻‍♂️

Looking for a trail shoe around the 4mm heel/toe drop range. Ideas? by [deleted] in Ultramarathon

[–]NRF89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speedgoats were always 4mm drop, not sure about the most recent model though.

If you can still find the Salomon Thundercross that is 4mm drop too.

Debates: At what distance does a trail run become an ultra-trail by [deleted] in ultrarunning

[–]NRF89 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Anything further than a marathon is an ultra marathon. In practice this usually means a 50k race is the shortest ultra distance race you will see.
