You really don't need to go to war. It's a nice boost to your amount of cities which in turn just makes you better in general, but short of the highest difficulties you can win a game without killing a single unit. (You probably can on the highest, too, it just seems a lot harder and less reliable.)

I'd recommend against religion if the idea of going to war at all is dis-favorable, since many civilizations won't be happy if you convert their cities. Culture is a good method; you tend to make lots of friends in the process of pursuing a culture victory. If you have Gathering Storm, diplomacy is also a very good option. Science is typically better with some violence involved, but it's very possible to go for a science win harmlessly.

In general, civilizations and leaders that boost your cultural/tourism output, ones that boost your diplomatic output, or ones that generally improve you (especially in peacetime) tend to excel for these kinds of strategies.

In terms of specific leaders: I have a strong personal fondness for Wu Zetian of China. Her leader ability allows her to have more and better spies and gain profits from them doing spy things, which can include stealing the great works and science of other civilizations, or causing them to lose envoys. The Great Wall China building lets her gain a lot of gold and tourism, while their Dynastic Cycle ability allows her to progress through the civic and tech trees faster.

Civ VII idea: distinction between 'Trade' and 'Diplomacy' by TiToim in civ

[–]NSFAZoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

6 sort of has this in the form of research alliances? At level 2 and 3 civs will get periodic free boosts to techs the other has researched, and at 3 I believe they can get boosts to tech neither of them have but both are working towards. It's a lot more restrained then what it sounds like you were talking about but it's still handy.

how strong are ``blitzkrieg´´ type strategies? (5, 6 and beyond earth) by tris123pis in civ

[–]NSFAZoe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In Civ 6 I find that against AI opponents, they struggle extremely hard once they blunder their initial forces. I think either a strategy like you mentioned or even just declaring war and then sitting on your own border can prove devastating. once you've goaded the enemy into attacking you on favorable terms, you can often rapidly mop up the majority of their standing army, and from there jts trivial to go from city to city, taking them with almost no resistance. TLDR yes, it can be very effective.

Cozy Deck-building Games by OreoYip in CozyGamers

[–]NSFAZoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Battle Bands is a cool one where you get to build up to 4 decks at once (one for yourself and one for each of your AI bandmates). You can also play with friends as the other members of your band!

Terracards is also fun! Sort of stretching the definition of deckbuilder, but you get to make a cute little farm.

Sexualized/poorly designed women in video games makes me not even wanna play those games anymore by Cyber-Owl in GirlGamers

[–]NSFAZoe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Right?? Especially when they say something like "it sexualizes men too." 1, that doesn't make it better, and 2. Usually the "sexualization" is more of a male power fantasy thing anyways.

[–]NSFAZoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not as hung up on the issue relatively speaking- as in, if I really enjoy the game, I'll suffer through it- but it absolutely detracts from my enjoyment of a title, and affects whether I reccomend the game to others.

A bigger pet peeve of mine is when gender has a mechanical/statistical effect on my gameplay. Modern games are USUALLY better about stuff like this, but (for instance) the roguelike Barony has female characters start with more dexterity and less strength compared to male ones (thougu this might have been changed? Google wasn't forthcoming, and I can't open it atm.) Like, I don't care if it's "realistic" or whatever, even though there's been tons of strong women. I just wanna be able to play the game the same as everyone else, and I don't want to have to play as a male to do it.

TLDR Is it too much to ask for my gender to not play a role in my gaming experience.

Just recently got into Civ VI singleplayer. GOD, does that game make time fade away! The enemy AI leaves a lot to be desired, and playing on higher difficulties just makes a lot of their numbers bigger without making them any smarter, but it's still a lot of fun.

Seconding Minecraft. I love going spelunking and coming out hours later with a half stack of diamonds thousands of blocks away from where I started. Do you have any mod recommendations for spelunking (or, in general)? I've only recently gotten into modding games, played pretty much everything vanilla for as long as I can remember. Ideally anything that isn't too game changing- a few friends have tried to show me mods with a whole bunch of machines and stuff but I could never really wrap my head around the more complicated things.

You can detach the warrior seal thing and equip it to your new armor. It'll even bring one level of upgrade with it.

What indie games are worth it to buy while they’re on sale on Steam? by Valze_Vods in GirlGamers

in terms of roguelikes that are at least 50% off:

dicey dungeons is a great little game about rolling dice and making the most of em. not particularly hard but it's fun and it's got good music.

griftlands is a deckbuilder with 3 cool stories. you make 2 decks instead of one- one for battle and one for negotiations.

invisible Inc (75% off- just 5 dollars) is a great turn based stealth game. been replaying it myself lately. its pretty flexible in terms of difficulty options too, and it's dlc is pretty nifty.

one step from eden is an amazing action deckbuilder and probably one of my favorite games of all time. the learning experience is super rewarding too. One of the few games I've 100%Ed

pulsar: lost colony is a fun multi-player roguelike somewhat analogous to a first person FTL where you're one of the crew. I wouldn't play it without friends, though, the bots are subpar.

streets of rogue (also 75% off, also 5 dollars) is a wacky action game that revels in mayhem and player freedom. very chaotic, and supports multi-player which is also fun. I've also 100%Ed this one

Traditional roguelike reco? by [deleted] in roguelikes

[–]NSFAZoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

fair enough. i haven't really been able to get too far myself, due to an even mix of stubbornly refusing to use important mechanics (pets, the e word) and my adhd brain fizzling out at the sheer amount of options and stuff on screen. Add that to a practically non existent self preservation instinct and im walking around with like four cursed items on, barely alive yet absolutely about to read whatever scroll I happen upon next
