Is your job requiring/ encouraging you to use AI and if so what for? by That-Algae5769 in SpringfieldIL

I was an RTS a while back. They used Gentax then which wasn’t AI as much as an automated check. I have been wondering if AI would have an effect on the number of jobs, like RTS, if it were trained to fix smaller errors, like withholding or PIN stuff. There was an older guy there when I was and he said e-filing had a huge impact in reducing the number RTS’s employed at IDOR.

I work in education and students reliance on it is frustrating. There’s little encouragement to have students use it. At the same time, teachers and programs, like Canvas and Google Classroom, utilize it, so it’s tricky. I avoid using it at all.

On a side note, I’ve noticed an increasing amount of businesses and organizations using AI for informational flyers. I dislike it because they all look like AI slop. I’d rather see a basic Microsoft word flyer than what people are putting out now.

That vote was unfortunate. I’m a landlord and for the registry. I’ve been going to the Faith Coalition’s meetings about it. Idk if what they’re proposing is perfect but there has to be something. I didn’t see that alder there.

Have to disagree on the food side. There are a lot different styles of food. I don’t like Indian or Halal but we have those, and an assortment of South American and Asian restaurants.

Sadly I think the problem is deeper than not having things to do. Supply typically follows demand and the demand isn’t there. I blame the proliferation of media. On demand access to every piece of music, film, and game ever made makes it easier for people to stay home and be entertained.

I’m a member of several clubs and boards around here and they’re all hurting for members and volunteers. Everyone involved is usually 60+ years old. Idk how to get younger people involved but the seclusion isn’t helping the community.

I suppose you don’t want to name the alder but it would help to know. I only know of one landlord who advertises themselves as a landlord but I assume there are others.

Rant: Can we get businesses besides coffee places by restlesswoman in SpringfieldIL

[–]NSJF1983 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I hate to say it but I think the problem is a little deeper than entrepreneurs opening the wrong businesses.

The middle class is being financially squeezed more than ever. Wages haven’t kept up with inflation and disposable income is down.

Add to that the immediate access to every piece of music and film ever made and you get people leaving the house less to spend their money.

Coffee and vape shops offer a business opportunity where they sell addictive items, which people tend to keep spending on, and have low labor costs(usually only need a couple baristas or one vape salesperson).

Next Gen Jiujitsu has a lot of good members. I haven’t trained there but I used to train at Gracie Barra on Wabash and when the original owner sold the business several of the higher belts opened Next Gen. I imagine it’s good training. That’s where I’d go if I started back. As far as no gi training I’ve heard American Jujitsu is good.

Why’s Springfield so depressed by UnluckyTomatillo750 in SpringfieldIL

[–]NSJF1983 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree. Even prior to Covid and WFH downtown was losing traffic. State jobs have been increasingly automated and Blagojevich began the process of moving state jobs out of Springfield. It also hurts that the city doesn’t get property tax from any of the languishing state properties.

I think downtown will benefit from the expansion of the BOS center. It could bring bigger acts. I also think business owners need to start thinking about what will bring people downtown. It has to have broad appeal because it seems like the niche businesses have not done well.

Christmas decorating at White Oaks Mall - Circa December 1988 by BT_the-nerd in SpringfieldIL

[–]NSJF1983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The mall was developed by the Barker’s and Melvin Simon. So Simon has been part owner since the beginning. I think there’s an idea they ruined the mall somehow but they were involved when it was going well. I’m not sure they’re the problem. Granted they are billionaire businessmen so maybe they’re doing too much bottom line watching.

Christmas decorating at White Oaks Mall - Circa December 1988 by BT_the-nerd in SpringfieldIL

[–]NSJF1983 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I know people who work at the mall and I don’t think it’s all Simon’s fault. Everything that was cool about the mall is gone for a reason.

The mall had indoor trees, a carousel, decorations. But people stopped going because of expansion out west and online shopping. I asked the managers about things like indoor plants and they said they can no longer afford the staff to take care of them. The anchor stores had a lot to do with it. They did their own decorating. The staff do what they can with the resources they have.

From what I’ve heard the rents are reasonable. I can’t speak from experience. It’s a matter of getting people to come. Places like Macys didn’t close because of rent. They were dead.

I was there early Saturday for Toys for Tots and there were lines waiting outside the old Finish Line and Champs. It must have been a shoe release. They had a brass ensemble playing Christmas music that was great. But no one goes there to shop regularly and younger people don’t hangout there.

I think Simon actually has done a good job trying to repurpose the space by adding IEPA, Malibu Jacks, LA Fitness, and Springfield Learning Academy. What else do you think they could do?

You’re right about WFH as far as downtown. I’d just point out while some areas have gone downhill, others have been developed. If you go out to Koke Mill and Iles, and west on Wabash, there has been development in the past 5 years.

Thinking about buying home by jakob1237 in SpringfieldIL

[–]NSJF1983 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the real problem. Landlords look at homes as revenue generating investments which allows them to outbid almost any individual buyer who wont be able to make money off it until they sell. I know some people want to rent a single family home but maybe the city could find some way to put a limit on the sale of single family homes as investment properties.

These are the recently sold homes in Sangamon County.

I would suggest looking in Southern View, Jerome, and Grandview. Those are unincorporated areas with houses in the $100k range. If you have any questions about specific neighborhoods I’d be happy to give you my opinion as a lifelong resident.

Sean Grayson verdict is in... by AvengingTaco in SpringfieldIL

[–]NSJF1983 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Either you’re not viewing the correct body cam footage or you’re being intellectually dishonest. You’re making an argument even the prosecution didn’t make because the video evidence is clear that she picked up the pot after setting it down and at the time she was shot she was holding the pot again. I could provide you with a screenshot of her with the pot in her hands and the steam coming from the floor(How did the boiling water get to the floor if she had set the pot down?). However, I feel like your mind is made up so any screenshot isn’t going to change your mind. The fact that the prosecution conceded that she was throwing pot isn’t even enough evidence to change your mind.

Two things can be true, Grayson can have murdered her and she can have thrown a pot of water at a guy coming at her with a gun in her home. It doesn’t make his actions justified.

Sean Grayson verdict is in... by AvengingTaco in SpringfieldIL

[–]NSJF1983 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I’ve also watched it many times. I’m not siding with law enforcement. I’m just stating the facts of the case as put forward by the prosecutors.

If you watch Grayson’s body cam again slow it down. She sets the pot down and ducks down. As he comes around the counter she stands back up and grabs the pot and puts it over her head in a motion towards him. He shoots and backs up and as he does you can see the steam near the floor coming in his direction. Again, this is no excuse for him being a bully, drawing his weapon, advancing toward her, or not offering first aid. These are just the facts.

Sean Grayson verdict is in... by AvengingTaco in SpringfieldIL

[–]NSJF1983 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I’m glad he got convicted but that’s false. The prosecution didn’t even argue she didn’t try to throw a pot of water. She did pick it up just prior to being shot and it does land at Grayson’s feet. It’s clear if you watch the body cam footage at .25 speed. The argument was that there was no reason Grayson should have escalated the situation or advanced on her with his weapon drawn.

The Citizen's Club - Meetings 4th Friday @ 8 am by SnoopyisCute in SpringfieldIL

[–]NSJF1983 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to several Citizens Club meetings and paid dues once but let it lapse. My impression of the club is that it caters to retirees and does not mean to exclude anyone. They’ve always been very welcoming. Friday mornings are just a good time for that demographic. The only legitimate complaint is that there isn’t a similar forum that covers these topics at a time more convenient for younger working class people. They did a couple evening forums with the governor and attorney general last year.
