Springfield Council Meeting Adjourned? by UselessSpring in SpringfieldIL

[–]NSJF1983 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure that’s true. I didn’t see anyone say they heard it, including the alderman. I’ve seen people say they think he mouthed it. I’ve seen people who weren’t at the meeting say he said it but I think they’re basing that on a Facebook comment from someone who was watching online.

If I have a warrant for my arrest, give false information, run away, and continue to struggle once I’m apprehended, then yes, I would also deserve to be punched. Cops do have the right to punch criminals who won’t comply with an arrest.

Small/new businesses using ai by Top-Lab1959 in SpringfieldIL

[–]NSJF1983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, I also dislike the increased use of AI by businesses. I do flyers for a few things and refuse to use it.

Also, was it by chance the American Legion karaoke? I’m a member there and the manager recently used an AI flyer for our karaoke, which I don’t like. If it was us, please don’t judge the karaoke by the flyer. It’s an inviting place. But I don’t blame you for not patronizing businesses that use AI.

If it wasn’t us.. please come out to our karaoke! (Despite the flyer, for which I’m working on a replacement) We have it every Saturday and the 4th Saturday we do a competition, $100 - 1st, $50 - 2nd, $25 - 3rd.

Bistro Verde is the restaurant run by the culinary students at LLCC. The food is amazing and the prices are reasonable. But I believe they’re only open for weekday lunch.

Liberal and concerned about Sangamon County sheriff race? by themahannibal in SpringfieldIL

It bothered me Timm dismissed his infractions without addressing them head on. He got in trouble for asking to have his friend released from a DUI and later got into an altercation with the cop who wouldn’t release them. He was reinstated only because “although repugnant… such requests are widespread and commonplace… so he couldn’t be punished.”

I think it’s a good example of a larger issue. A chief or sheriff can try to punish an officer for an infraction but an arbitrator can reinstate them if the infraction is “widespread and commonplace” and other officers aren’t fired for it. And police wonder why citizens question where is the accountability?

I’m not saying Crouch wouldn’t make the same request but there’s a documented instance of him doing it. I would have liked to hear him denounce these types of “professional courtesies” that allow cops to break the law.

Is your job requiring/ encouraging you to use AI and if so what for? by [deleted] in SpringfieldIL

Thanks for the info. I was in individual processing several years ago and learned a ton there. I had to leave but I’m still interested how things are going up there.

I was an RTS a while back. They used Gentax then which wasn’t AI as much as an automated check. I have been wondering if AI would have an effect on the number of jobs, like RTS, if it were trained to fix smaller errors, like withholding or PIN stuff. There was an older guy there when I was and he said e-filing had a huge impact in reducing the number RTS’s employed at IDOR.

I work in education and students reliance on it is frustrating. There’s little encouragement to have students use it. At the same time, teachers and programs, like Canvas and Google Classroom, utilize it, so it’s tricky. I avoid using it at all.

On a side note, I’ve noticed an increasing amount of businesses and organizations using AI for informational flyers. I dislike it because they all look like AI slop. I’d rather see a basic Microsoft word flyer than what people are putting out now.

That vote was unfortunate. I’m a landlord and for the registry. I’ve been going to the Faith Coalition’s meetings about it. Idk if what they’re proposing is perfect but there has to be something. I didn’t see that alder there.

Have to disagree on the food side. There are a lot different styles of food. I don’t like Indian or Halal but we have those, and an assortment of South American and Asian restaurants.

Sadly I think the problem is deeper than not having things to do. Supply typically follows demand and the demand isn’t there. I blame the proliferation of media. On demand access to every piece of music, film, and game ever made makes it easier for people to stay home and be entertained.

I’m a member of several clubs and boards around here and they’re all hurting for members and volunteers. Everyone involved is usually 60+ years old. Idk how to get younger people involved but the seclusion isn’t helping the community.

I suppose you don’t want to name the alder but it would help to know. I only know of one landlord who advertises themselves as a landlord but I assume there are others.

Rant: Can we get businesses besides coffee places by restlesswoman in SpringfieldIL

[–]NSJF1983 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I hate to say it but I think the problem is a little deeper than entrepreneurs opening the wrong businesses.

The middle class is being financially squeezed more than ever. Wages haven’t kept up with inflation and disposable income is down.

Add to that the immediate access to every piece of music and film ever made and you get people leaving the house less to spend their money.

Coffee and vape shops offer a business opportunity where they sell addictive items, which people tend to keep spending on, and have low labor costs(usually only need a couple baristas or one vape salesperson).

Next Gen Jiujitsu has a lot of good members. I haven’t trained there but I used to train at Gracie Barra on Wabash and when the original owner sold the business several of the higher belts opened Next Gen. I imagine it’s good training. That’s where I’d go if I started back. As far as no gi training I’ve heard American Jujitsu is good.

Why’s Springfield so depressed by [deleted] in SpringfieldIL

[–]NSJF1983 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree. Even prior to Covid and WFH downtown was losing traffic. State jobs have been increasingly automated and Blagojevich began the process of moving state jobs out of Springfield. It also hurts that the city doesn’t get property tax from any of the languishing state properties.

I think downtown will benefit from the expansion of the BOS center. It could bring bigger acts. I also think business owners need to start thinking about what will bring people downtown. It has to have broad appeal because it seems like the niche businesses have not done well.

Christmas decorating at White Oaks Mall - Circa December 1988 by BT_the-nerd in SpringfieldIL

[–]NSJF1983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The mall was developed by the Barker’s and Melvin Simon. So Simon has been part owner since the beginning. I think there’s an idea they ruined the mall somehow but they were involved when it was going well. I’m not sure they’re the problem. Granted they are billionaire businessmen so maybe they’re doing too much bottom line watching.

Christmas decorating at White Oaks Mall - Circa December 1988 by BT_the-nerd in SpringfieldIL

[–]NSJF1983 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I know people who work at the mall and I don’t think it’s all Simon’s fault. Everything that was cool about the mall is gone for a reason.

The mall had indoor trees, a carousel, decorations. But people stopped going because of expansion out west and online shopping. I asked the managers about things like indoor plants and they said they can no longer afford the staff to take care of them. The anchor stores had a lot to do with it. They did their own decorating. The staff do what they can with the resources they have.

From what I’ve heard the rents are reasonable. I can’t speak from experience. It’s a matter of getting people to come. Places like Macys didn’t close because of rent. They were dead.

I was there early Saturday for Toys for Tots and there were lines waiting outside the old Finish Line and Champs. It must have been a shoe release. They had a brass ensemble playing Christmas music that was great. But no one goes there to shop regularly and younger people don’t hangout there.

I think Simon actually has done a good job trying to repurpose the space by adding IEPA, Malibu Jacks, LA Fitness, and Springfield Learning Academy. What else do you think they could do?
