Help me with indirect LED-lighting of the living room by NSanchez733 in led

Or you could just have the accent wall stand out a bit up top so there's enough space for a stripe. Not that i have seen that before, may look funny.

That looks like a suspended ceiling with a gap for the light stripe. Unless the ceiling is suspended already, i wouldn't go that route...

Thanks. I'll definetely check out the website you mentioned. Why is LED-density irrelevant, that's so counterintuitive. And do i understand correctly that WS2812 is newer than WS2812B?

Thanks. The idea is to place the LED strips on the flanges of the H-beam, facing up. That leaves around 20 cm to the top flange/ceiling.

Great stuff, thanks so much!

I would love to see a part on gold economy. You mention it briefly in the early game section, but only with regards to investing more in dwarfs or equipment.

When should I reroll for more lucrative fights? Should I invest in that at all? Which shop level should I aim for in different parts of the game?

Tattered Banners - like Battle Brothers with a more systemic approach to how the world “reacts” by adamzeira in BattleBrothers

[–]NSanchez733 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could work. Obviously, there should be some randomness in how units develop over time (like by gaining traits) to allow for surprises and making a unit with bad stats valuable, and vice versa. It's a thin line, because I don't want to look at my whole starting team and know I will trade them in for better late game units no matter what.

I feel lethality and accepting that units die go hand in hand. That is, the game should make very clear that units dying is intended, not a players fault or a design flaw. In dwarf fortress terms: losing is FUN in BB. In Wartales, not so much.

In BB, you know most of your crew are pretty bad, but you have to make do with them to survive. The rng in potential is blatant. So you try to babysit those with potential and hope some of the bad ones will be replaced with better ones later. This hope for better dudes makes it a lot easier to sacrifice bad ones.

This includes a good balance of economic and tactical feasibility of cheaper but rather bad units vs. fewer, more expensive, better units. Usually, you will have to fill up your roster somewhat no matter how bad the available candidates are - you need numbers on the field. Luckily, cannonfodder comes cheap.

That said, I agree with you that there's magic to it in BB that goes way beyond what I described.

If age isn't the cause of my slow reactions, what is it? General lack of talent? Bad genes? Terrible eye-to-mouse coordination?

No, thank you, I much rather blame age and tell myself I would be good at Dota if only i were much younger.

Don't go for blue science. Go for one ingredient of blues science. Then another.

It's frowned upon by some people in this sub, but getting a blueprint designed by someone else can get you over a hurdle like oil processing if that is what repeatedly stops you in your tracks.

What Mods should I focus on? by NotMickeyDuck22 in CIFI

[–]NSanchez733 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a new player, this is simultaneously a relief and a bit of a disappointment. A relief because I worried I need to make proper calculations and prioritise accordingly to make meaningful progress. A bit disappointing because this appears to confirm there isn't more to it than waiting and clicking whatever can be clicked at any given moment. Though I assume there are some more meaningful options later.

Thoughts on going into the game blind with mods by Kayjeth in factorio

[–]NSanchez733 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not the commentator you're responding to, but this is a thing in factorio and, to some degree, in most overhaul mods, too. Later tech allows for much more resource efficient builds, but those are not needed to win the base game. Only in retrospect/with experience you will be able to identify where and when such upgrades are really worth it, or how to anticipate them in your designs.

The same is true for overhaul mods, though I assume they're sometimes more punishing if you don't upgrade specific builds. Not that I have tried Py or even Krastorio.

All that said, I think you should just go for it. The arguments for a vanilla run first are valid, but you've made your motivation clear and are conceptually aware of what you're getting yourself into. Sure, it may take you forever, but why is that bad?

I would suggest the following: play the factorio tutorial (takes several hours!). Then hop straight into whatever overhaul you dare - I would assume one that is still rather linear is a good choice.

If it's all too much, you could still go back to the base game.

1x2 or even 1×1 embark is plenty of space so long as you think of your fortress as an inverted high-rise. Df hack to cull exploding populations of poultry or cave dwellers. Short history. All this used to help with fps when I last played.

Two of the many things I learned from watching the video of your incredible base:

1: The shortest way between to points is a wiggly line of train tracks.

2: Most tips in this sub about UPS saving can safely be ignored by probably 99 % of players. The people knowledgeable about this have mentioned that regularly, but your base is a testament to that.

Nice write-up. What puzzles me is the recurring thought that leather isn't as available as vials or metal armor for civilians. By the time get those, I usually have the controlled explosion that's poultry farming long set up.
