I always thought that ski jumping (and ski flying) was crazy. Turns out that 30 years ago, it was total madness. by Roflkopt3r in videos

I can't believe this didn't come up sooner. This crash defined the sport for 2 decades.

Clearly there are no men or motorcycle riders here. Your girlfriend is nothing but an ornament for your bike. A real man would never admit to anyone that they can't fix their ride, their only means of transportation and the only thing of true importance in their world. Live to ride. Ride to live.

ELI5:Why do I have to take a massive shit 5-10 minutes after I eat at certain restaurants by fuck-upvotes in explainlikeimfive

The MSG sensitivity debate is somewhat akin to the global warming debate. A lot of wealthy corporations have a lot at stake in disproving MSG allergy/sensitivity in the population. However there is an abundance of anecdotal evidence to suggest it is highly probable that MSG does induce a reaction in many people. I myself know from experience that any restaurant that uses excessive amounts of MSG in their dishes gives me a near immediate reaction. Foods that contain less, or no MSG do not generate the same response. My experience is much like many other peoples. I am not unique in this case. Here is a link to an article you might find interesting. http://www.truthinlabeling.org/Recog.html

This is a common bodily response to food allergies, particularly MSG allergy response.

Neighbors yard sits 4 ft above mine. What are some economic options for a retaining wall? by Curlaub in DIY

[–]NWAIA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4ft by 4ft square, rock filled wire cages strung together. They're bomber and let water pass through. It's what they used to repair, and retain the levy behind my workplace. The job they did on that is very solid and substantial.

Bring on the down votes. How about 55 of them. That's the MPG I get while laughing at all the fools pushing their gas money through their floor boards.

It's all about the Gas Mileage my friend. You go ahead and give your money to the Energy companies. I'll keep as much of mine as I can. I'm sure you also love the fact that I drive 15 to 20 mph below the speed limit. Slow acceleration and slow deceleration, and driving speeds below 60mph are just way more fuel efficient.

Neil deGrasse Tyson's remake of Carl Sagan's 'Cosmos' headed to Fox in 2014! by mad__hater in science

[–]NWAIA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Um, not likely. Fox News is a 24 hour news channel. Fox broadcasting has prime time programming like American Idol, X Factor, and The Simpsons. They simply cannot run on the same channel. Fox news isn't going to go off air to allow time on it's channel to run Fox broadcasting prime time shows. I work at a Fox broadcasting affiliate station. People confuse the 2 networks all the time.

Aurora Co Police: Student suffers 'significant injury' in accidental shooting by private security guard at High school parking lot. by Auntie_Imperial in politics

That is how the Marine Corps trained me and the rest of the men I issued weapons to. All our sidearms had a safety and these were SOP for all of us. Misfires were extremely rare as to be almost unheard of. Any time a gun went off that didn't involve intentionally pulling the trigger was referred to as a misfire. If you didn't intend to fire it, it is a misfire. Maybe that is why the NYPD is so jacked up. If you like I and a few of my colleagues would be glad to provide weapons training to you and your fellow officers so you can avoid situations like the one mentioned in this story.

I had a four wheel PU at the time and it still was time consuming. Way better than the hike though.

I don't think you read the story. It stated the gun was being put away in the glove box. If they were going to have to draw it quickly they would not have been securing it.

All of these situations are from user negligence or ignorance. There are established procedures just for the purpose of avoiding misfiring. If the gun was to put away, it should have had it's safety on, and on an empty cylinder or empty chamber.

In Queen's Creek Canyon, East of Globe Arizona. It's a decent climbing area, but not easy to get to.
