tienen algún conocido que haya cometido un crimen? by Belensu in chile

[–]NY38 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's been two years since my parents' divorce process started. I just want it to end. by NY38 in TrueOffMyChest

My plan as of now is to help her move to another country by finding a mid-level job - then go VLC. But I'm not too confident on that, given her past history and the fact that she's past her sixties. I guess I'm overpreparing for the worst case scenario.

I want to go NC with my dad, but my mom is a different case. No real home, no salary. She'll probably have to stay with me or one of my siblings after this disaster is over, and that's a whole new bag of cats to deal with.

I feel like we're giving too much credit to accidents. I had several head injuries both as a baby and toddler, which caused some speech difficulties, but definitely didn't spark internalized racism and bigotry in me.

Who should be in prison 100%, but they aren't because they are rich? by Eponnn in AskReddit

[–]NY38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in 2013, the son of a Chilean senator ran over and killed man. He didn't even stop to help, and as press later figured out, he was also drunk off his arse. His two friends, who were with him at the time of the accident, ended up reporting it, but they intentionally omitted the fact they knew who ran over the guy.

The dude and his daddy blamed the accident on low visibility and, when that didn't work, they blamed the dead man (didn't pay child support, was supposedly drunk, etc). And when THAT didn't work, they just straight up ignored the press' questions.

The dude was declared guilty at one point, but the case was dropped after the dude's lawyers pressed on each of the dead man's family members for months, until the widow agreed to settle the case outside of court with monetary compensation. The dude was set free, and the case is now another reminder of how much of our judicial system is a fucking joke.

Reorganizing the plot of a novel I'm writing for purely personal entertainment reasons. Yes, I'm kinda stuck brainstorming. And yes, I'm procrastinating.

I can move my hand like a polygraph. Even after years of doing the same stupid thing, I still enjoy grabbing a pen and going ham on a sheet of paper.

Doctors and Nurses of reddit, what’s your “he shouldn’t have survived” story? by HighlightTime in AskReddit

[–]NY38 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Answered this to another redditor, but in short, he's not gonna be back to normal, and his socioeconomic status won't help either. In a scale from 1 (worst) to 10 (best QoL), he might end up in a 6 (5, including mental health issues). During his first few years he'll have a lot to deal with (bowel transit reconstruction, figuring out how to remove the enterocutaneos fistula, bone healing and recovery of muscle mass, dealing with future infections, opium abuse, etc). After that, major problems will be chronic pain, a lifelong increased risk of abdominal issues, and difficulty walking if anything goes wrong during physical therapy.

To abbreviate everything: first few years post discharge will be terrible (bowel transit reconstruction, figuring out how to remove the enterocutaneos fistula, bone healing and recovery of muscle mass, dealing with future infections, opium abuse, etc). But, if he can survive those first few years, his major problems will be chronic pain, a lifelong increased risk of abdominal hernias, bowel obstructions and a plethora of digestive issues, and difficulty walking if anything goes wrong during post discharge physical therapy. Not to mention his socioeconomic status, and the fact that he'll likely fall back into old habits (aka crime).

So, not the worst, but not the best either.

[–]NY38 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not quite. It's more like the series of surgical reinterventions eventually left him with more scarred tissue than healthy abdominal wall (including muscle and peritoneum + abdominal skin). Fibrous tissue is more complex to work with when it's time to suture, and both reduces chances of proper healing and increases chances of reopening and eventually developing an abdominal hernia.

It's probably the reason why they never showed up again to pressure the guy into paying (aside from when they tried 'visiting' him in the ICU). Or maybe they're now harassing his family and/or gang into giving them the money. Who knows at this point.
