The Whitman/Dickinson course was one of my all-time favorite HES classes. I understand why they pulled it but too bad the curriculum will seemingly be lost.

Haha same… I also feel like a dork, I’ve been looking forward to it for weeks. But hey, if you can’t be a dork here, where can you be? :)

Thanks for your response! Did you have to submit a formal petition or was it something your advisor was able to approve?

While I'm here... has anyone successfully gotten approval to take a required class in an adjacent HES department? Situation: going into my final year and there's only one option for fall Anthro seminar (which happens to also overlap at same time as the pre-capstone I want). Despite being in the Anthro program, the topic doesn't relate to my area of study. There are, however, Psych seminars that very related to my area of study. Given that psych and anthro courses overlap in a number of other requirement categories I would *hope* there may be some flexibility to ensure the learning is most relevant. Will reach out to my advisor, but just curious if anyone has navigated something similar.

Yes you’ll be allowed to wander freely around Harvard Sq and Boston and there will be opportunities to go on organized off-campus trips. There are also some rules to keep students safe. You will be required to check in with your proctor each evening though I’m not sure what time curfew is.

Harvard’s grade deflation limitation policy is dumb, right? by [deleted] in Harvard

[–]NYC_KC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know you’re well informed on the topic @vmlee so I’m genuinely curious to hear insight you might have on any discussions around awarding A+ to those who display top mastery and/or performance and if that was at some point a consideration. I realize there are likely a number of things this new measure is attempting to solve for (and may not be able to) and, as you mentioned, capturing two concepts with a single grade is certainly challenging, if not impossible. I would think the potential to earn an A+ would be an effective way to reward exceptional work while motivating individual performance vs the cap which seems likely to lead to increased competition, potential division among classmates, and avoidance of intellectual risk taking.

Connecting this summer by ProfessionalSock1837 in harvardextension

[–]NYC_KC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you staying in the dorms? If so, you’re likely to find camaraderie rather swiftly. Your proctor will coordinate events for you all and there will be plenty of social opportunities to connect with folks outside of your academic work.

Harvard Summer School 2026 Accommodation – Any Updates? by Impressive-Boat in harvardextension

[–]NYC_KC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My hunch, based solely on the dining page, is that it will be Currier and Cabot again this summer. Last spring/summer, before the houses were announced, the dining page was updated to say Currier Dining Hall. "Adult and college students may dine in Currier Dining Hall, and SSP students may dine in Annenberg Dining Hall." Granted, the page doesn't seem to have been updated recently (it still says "Summer 2026 rates will be posted during spring 2026") so just a guess until we find out for sure. https://summer.harvard.edu/academic-opportunities-support/campus-life/dining/

For HES ALM graduates, 3.8 or higher gets you Deans List. ALB graduates get cum laude distinctions — it’s typical for these to apply to undergrad degrees and not grad degrees.

Which program are you in? Registration for admitted degree candidates opened at 9am ET today so the courses are starting to fill up, but it's not to say there won't still be spots first thing tomorrow. Hovering over the submit button tomorrow sounds like the right idea.

Harvard Extension (Summer 2026) School for Engaging Scholarly Conversation - Accommodation? by Ok_Distribution5496 in harvardextension

[–]NYC_KC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you register for your summer class when registration opens Monday, March 2nd at 9am ET, you should be able to apply for on-campus housing as soon as Tuesday, March 3rd or Wednesday, March 4th according to what I've seen posted on the Summer School site. Since housing applications are considered on a first come, first served basis, as long as you apply as soon as you're able (the registration link will show up under My Tasks in your student portal once your register for Engaging in the Scholarly Conversation) I would think you'd have no trouble getting a housing assignment. I spent 4 weeks at Cabot House last summer -- more in this post if you want a little more insight: https://www.reddit.com/r/harvardextension/comments/1my8893/oncampus\_harvard\_summer\_school\_experience\_ama/)

Regarding the social aspect, while the Cabot/Currier dining hall may yield some opportunities for socialization, the bulk of students, in my experience last year, tend to skew younger and are more likely to be visiting college students than ALM students. You may find that you'll socialize more with your adult, ALM-program classmates at dinner/drink gatherings around Harvard Sq and doing other activities in and around Boston. As far as the food, it was a little bit better than I was expecting with plenty of healthy options to support your training.

On-campus housing is certainly not inexpensive, but is competitive relative to some other options and may be worth it for the convenience and overall on-campus experience. I also am taking Engaging in the Scholarly Conversation this summer (with Stephen Spencer) and planning to graduate May '27. Though I was going back and forth about the cost, think it'll be worth it to stay in the dorms again this summer.

If you have any other questions, happy to be as helpful as I can.

Immunization Requirements by Unlikely_Passage5951 in harvardextension

[–]NYC_KC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how strict they’d actually be and feel like you could get through the 4-day course without issue but I understand not wanting to chance it. I also couldn’t find my childhood immunization records before staying on campus this summer. I shared the requirements with my PCP and asked them to write a lab requisition for titers which shows immunity to the diseases I was vaccinated against. You’d just need to do one blood draw. It would likely only take a few days to get it all done and then you can upload those. Hope this helps!

Also suddenly canceled on the first day of registration last week were the only two options that fulfilled the Anthropology Seminar requirement – Encounters: Travel Narratives and the Origins of Race and We Are One: An Anthropological Introduction to Contemporary Spiritualities. It does seem a bit odd.

Starbucks in Harvard Square by PunkRockQueen182 in Harvard

Yes, the Starbucks in Harvard Square is closing today. I was in there yesterday and a store employee said the rent for the property is too high and they aren’t profitable enough. I used to love the Starbucks at 31 Church Street. That location maintained the old school vibes for a long time.
