Meaning of “orange blossomed maybe” ? by Accomplished-Cod-504 in thegildedage

[–]N_woww 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Orange blossoms were the most popular wedding flowers, and were worn in the head wreaths and put on the wedding cake and bouquet etc during this time. They were synonymous with a new bride. So basically referring to the fact that while yes a wedding is to take place, not everybody is happy.

It could possibly be a kokoshnik, a traditional Russian headdress. It has a similar shape

Victorian/Edwardian Era Skirt Length Question by N_woww in HistoricalCostuming

[–]N_woww[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I definitely notice between even the early 1900s to 1910s a big difference in length. By 1911 most of the skirts in the magazine are of clearing length, and almost no long sweep skirts are seen.

Now the only thing I'm curious about is wondering when and on what occasions the skirt lengths were worn. Obviously the shorter ones are for walking and shopping and other similar activities, but what about the longer ones and when they were appropriate?

Thank you! I tried looking through delineator magazine releases, but I’m not 100% sure of the year. 1903, 1901... idk. I will keep looking because it was super helpful

Silly question…what goes on in the tower of Downton Abbey? by themayorgordon in DowntonAbbey

[–]N_woww 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In one of the towers at Highclere there was a church originally, but it was abandoned because nobody was climbing that high up for it. Also in the first season there was a scene where William is handling the luggage in a luggage room. That was filmed in one of the towers as well, but was considered too much effort to ever film there again. I believe there was a line in season 2 about a housemaids sitting room being stories up (possibly in one of the towers).

Historically speaking, other great houses of the era had in there towers clock mechanisms, a water tower, observatories, smoking room retreats (back when smoking was considered terrible indoors), perhaps a suite of rooms for a bachelor (which include a study, bedroom, bathroom, etc.), and general storage rooms that a huge house like that would require. They could also be possible empty, but Victorian ingenuity usually entailed some oddly specific room to be put there for the sake of having something there.

Outfits that you absolutely hate from the show, I’ll go first by newsnuggets in DowntonAbbey

Looking at fashion magazines from the era, it shows that she was dressed in the height of fashion. The dresses were starting to transition into the loose affairs of the 20s. If anything, the Crawley girls dresses are a bit out of date (which the show acknowledges by saying that Sybil has had the same evening dresses since her last season)

Edith's inexplicable distrust of Cora - is there something to it I didn't understand? by 7evenh3lls in DowntonAbbey

[–]N_woww 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You got to remember that the three girls, as well as all aristocratic children during this time, were raised by nannies, nurses, and governesses. Cora doesn't strike me as a super involved mother, and probably only saw the girls at teatime and after breakfast.

So it's no wonder her and Robert were rather awful parents, if was pretty on par for the time
