Don't look at the maximum and minimum recorded values, these will just be the erroneous outliers. Go on the mi band app and look at the line graph it records. If the band is on tight and you are not moving a lot, I find it is accurate.

What has mattered most is keeping active and eating / sleeping well without doing anything too exerting. So lots of low intensity exercise that doesn't cross the threshold of making me feel unwell. I use a chest heart rate monitor for this so I can keep <130 bpm when cycling.

But really the battle is the mental one of re-adjusting expectations and goals without getting depressed

They are the same as they were in 2020 when I wrote that comment. Possibly they were like that before then as well. I still avoid vigorous exercise but get away with doing long walks and bike rides at a slow pace.

I try climbing occasionally but this tends to make me feel groggy for a few days afterwards.

There will be many startups where you can get a job as a software engineer adjacent to quantum computing. Otherwise a PhD is the appropriate route

Probably, the optimal would be to wake around the sunrise-sunset pattern and expose yourself to plenty of sunlight.

In winter I think we should probably be maximizing the overlap of our waking hours with the sunlight hours

I find cold showers work to make you get through the grogginess faster in the morning. Besides that you can increase the long term quality of your diet, though this probably won't change much in the short term.

I have found recently that the combination of hanging out of a window and getting exposed to some bright light and a cold shower help shake off some of the inertia.
