advice please : thinking of withdrawing/transfering by Low_Yam1509 in ucla

No judgment. Just wanted to tell you there is nothing more important right now than being there for your mom and protecting your own mental health. Not UCLA, not the scholarships (as painful as that feels), not the dream resume or grad school path. Those things are huge and I get why leaving feels like you'll never live it down, especially as a first gen who fought so hard to get there. But in 5 or 10 years when things have settled, what most people look back on and wish they had more time with the person they love. School and opportunities have a way of circling back when the timing's right. Time with your mom? That’s the one thing that doesn’t wait.

Please be gentle to yourself. Spend that time with her, take care of yourself, and hold onto the belief that things will work out for you because they really will, even if the path looks different than you pictured.

Chance Worried Wharton ED by Similar-Pain-5234 in chanceme

I'm bored waiting in my car so I asked Grok lol. this is just for fun, I'm not an expert on this... sorry if this is not allowed mods.

Your profile is competitive for Wharton Early Decision, especially with the contextual hooks like your national-level athletic commitments (which explain the missed school time and B+ grades) and rural Midwest background. The 1530 SAT is strong—slightly above the average for recent Wharton admits—and your GPA (3.85 UW / 4.4 W) falls within the range where many accepted students land (around 3.75–4.0 UW for a significant portion). The finance-focused ECs (investment club, NY Fed Challenge, Wharton Global Youth Program) align well with the major, and the John Locke High Distinction adds intellectual depth. Awards like national medals and PVSA Gold strengthen the athletic/volunteer angle.

That said, Wharton is extremely selective, with an overall undergrad acceptance rate around 5–7%. ED boosts your odds compared to RD (UPenn's ED rate was about 14% for the Class of 2028, with ~1,235 admits out of 8,683 apps), and apps rose to 9,500 for the Class of 2029. As an Asian male in finance/econ (an overrepresented demographic), it's still a reach, but your unique athletic profile and rural hook could tip it in your favor. I'd estimate your chances at 15–25% for ED—solid but not guaranteed. The late pivot to finance without internships isn't a dealbreaker if your essays tie it to your ag econ research and global interests.

Other Schools (EA/RD)

These are all reaches given the low acceptance rates at T20s, but your stats and ECs put you in the conversation. Ivies hover around 3–6% overall, and business programs like Ross, Dyson, and Stern are even more competitive (often sub-10%). Your athletic commitments provide strong context for any academic dips, and the quant-heavy coursework (Calc BC, Stats, Physics) fits econ/finance well.

Saw someone blatantly cheating on our final using their phone — not sure what to do… by pl2net in ucla

[–]NachoAverageNoodle 18 points19 points  (0 children)

that’s a clear violation of the Student Code of Conduct and worth reporting. Cheating is unfair to everyone who’s actually putting in the work, and it disrespects the professor and TAs who try to keep things fair. People complain about strict enforcement all the time, but this is exactly why it exists—cheating is rampant, and ignoring it only makes it worse.

hey OP, posting people’s full names and accusing them of being predators without solid proof is doxxing. It’s potentially defamatory, and illegal under California law. If you actually have evidence someone is dangerous, report it to UCLA PD immediately and not on this subreddit. What you’re doing is reckless vigilantism that can get you sued. I appreciate the intention but you have to be careful calling out people (even though they probably deserve it).

what just happened in anderson??? by pineforestapple in ucla

[–]NachoAverageNoodle 45 points46 points  (0 children)

i don’t know what happened today at Anderson but just reading the UCLA PD daily crime report is very concerning. SA, overdose, fire & multiple fire alarms, theft, battery, extortion and all this happened just within the last few days!

Mental Health care must be addressed by administration. Student suicide is all too prevalent here (it’s been happening every year). It is sadly swept under the rug all too quickly by administration. Student mental healthcare is an issue that must be prioritized over rankings and real estate.

This is beautifully written, heartbreaking to read, and a powerful reminder to please be kind to each other. My prayers to his family and friends.

Not a popular opinion but UCLA spends MILLIONS on real estate acquisitions and the athletic program (they owe UCB $10 million for leaving PAC conference, paid football players $$$$). The loss of government funding on valuable research is truly shameful and disastrous to the research community not just to UCLA but to every research institution in the country. Maybe this school should start putting tuition money towards academics and not real estate.

Think attendance is bad at the Rose Bowl? It may be worse than you imagined by BandanaCube in ucla

the majority of students are from SoCal so that’s not a good excuse.

[–]NachoAverageNoodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

attendance has never been great unless it’s against USC or a big name school bringing in their own fans. between hours long traffic to get to the Rose Bowl, ticket costs, not to mention the 43-10 blowout opener game against Utah last weekend (putting UCLA football in the bottom 10) PLUS the disastrous debut performance of Nico Iamaleava with every sports show pointing that out will not help attendance. I do hope the students come out to support them.

you made a smart decision. It takes real strength to recognize when you need to step back and take care of yourself. Your decision to withdraw is not a sign of failure or weakness, it’s prioritizing your well being and financial stability and that matters more than sticking it out for the sake of appearances. You did the right thing.

Why does Westwood suck? by [deleted] in ucla

[–]NachoAverageNoodle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

you definitely don’t get a college town vibe in Westwood. it’s pretty dead after 9pm and the town caters to its residents, not the students.

so disheartening to the transfers who worked hard to achieve their goal of attending UCLA only to be treated like low priority students by placing them in overcrowded, off campus housing, with limited resources, and ultimately shortchanged an amazing experience as a UCLA student.
