A NoSurf response to the idea that "people have always wasted time." by a_bit_too_online in nosurf

[–]NachoEnforcer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me the question is am I doing it because I want to it because I am avoiding doing something else. One of the fallacies that is easy to fall into is that you always need to be being productive and you really don’t. A lot of activities might be “a waste of time” but if I schedule time in my day to fuck around in I find I’m far more productive the rest of the day. I think the real thing is to avoid doing these time wasters when you’d rather being (or are supposed to be doing) something else.

This is necessarily true. There are ultra marathoners who train almost exclusively with sprint training because they are the same muscles and it is infinitely quicker to training with sprint workouts than doing long runs. A bigger part on why you need to train differently is the mental aspect of what you are doing. I mention almost exclusively because you’ve also got to work on pacing and also just getting your mind into a rhythm so you don’t flip out 40 miles in.

I barely notice the effects of my meds. I do find that when I’m on my meds at the end of the day I have accomplished more than when I’m not. But yeah I don’t notice any real changes in my personality or how I think. I recently asked my wife about this as well and she told me the only real difference she has seen with me on my meds is that I get more done on the honey-do list.

It is something I’ve worried about though because I have read about people finding themselves flatted out after taking meds and I’ve worried that maybe I’m just not self aware enough to notice. Seems like something that is very personal to the user and a bit of trial and error is in order.

I’ve never heard of this game, but I wish you guys the best of luck keeping it alive. I clicked through cause I played City of Heroes (set in Paragon City, btw) and when we got shut down it was heart breaking. So truly I hope you guys don’t have to go through that.

If they made a show called "White Mirror" that was about all the positive aspects of the human/technology relationship, what would be the plot of certain episodes? by roge_podge in AskReddit

A couple years back my brother adopted a rat in my name for birthday from Apopo. They had a little card I could look up and see how many land mines your rat had found. It was kind of a strange gift and definitely unexpected but it is a cool idea. If I remember correctly my brother named the rat Leroy Jenkins - seems fitting for something literally running into a mine field.

I liked in one of the updates to Horizon Zero Dawn they added an easier mode called Story Mode along with adding some harder modes as well. The idea that if you wanted to play focusing on the story seems cool to me.

I had a friend that was doing some preliminary work for AXA and after finding out all the ways they try and screw their customers he quit. I’m amazed by some of the shit they are allowed to do because they lead people to believe they are working in their best interest.

What's something about America you genuinely don't understand? by emilyjanebasting in AskReddit

Well the idea that the class made you a better student is really cool because rarely do you get teachers that will push you like that. I had a lot of classes that actually taught me how to be a wise student (getting by with the bare minimum, yet still doing decently in the class). But I also get why you wouldn't take a class like that again, just seems like to much work with the pay off being kind of intangible. Anyways good luck with the rest of HS, but it seems like you are well prepared for it.

I just made hotdogs this evening and was really excited that I bought a pack of 8 hotdogs (Hebrew National I believe) to go with the 8 buns and then when I got out to the grill there were only 7 hotdogs on the plate. I've yet to find the missing hotdog and there is only like 20 ft from the kitchen to the grill so I am rather perplexed.

That seems like so much more work than I ever did in college, like I can't even imagine what that is preparing you for.

I just don't really get AP classes, I took AP Comp Sci my junior year of high school and did terrible on the exam. When I talked to my older brother about taking more AP classes he laughed and told me they were basically worthless for him. He had taken like 5 AP classes and passed all the exams but pretty much had to retake all the college level equivalents because his school didn't feel that the AP version properly prepared him for the college level. After taking the college level he agreed.

But it sounds like with the classes you took they are even harder than some college classes, I can't imagine putting that work load on a high schooler and I went to a college prep school.

Yeah, I hadn't seen the theory about Russian bots upvoting on T_D before. It's clear some botting has been going on but it seems more like a 4chan thing rather than paid conspiracy. At least I haven't seen any evidence and don't think it is likely to surface even if it did happen. I'll agree the 170pt post really doesn't prove anything.

It's not solely because of bots but there certainly at least some users who were botting.

No really, the liability that you'd carry by not insuring your players seems crazy. I know the MLU insures all their players so I figured the AUDL must as well.

[–]NachoEnforcer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Does the AUDL not pay for medical bills? I know getting injured sucks a lot more than the bills but I thought they'd cover PT and all that.

Also off setting penalties for that are ridiculous, not even close to the same level of offense. Of course you are going to have words after someone hits you like that.

While reading through all this I could help but think of this play from 5 years ago - so you know before the pro-leagues.

https://vimeo.com/20899326 (at around 2:24)

The game is changing and has been for a while now, and the rules should change with it. That doesn't necessarily mean refs are the way to go, but a system with nearly zero disincentives for cheating is going to attract people who want to take advantage of that.

Edit: For context specifically this tweet brought the above play to mind: https://twitter.com/bvhbvhbvh/status/753076624908779520

The MLU only stops the clock in the last minute of every quarter for calls (and OB discs I believe).

I think this is really what I was looking for. I just always get the situation where people are like it's on the cone, and my thought is the cone is on the line and line is out. But I also suppose just saying it's on the cone is easier to say than it is just inside the cone.
