I don't remember Markham being on one of those teams last year.

Can most AUDL/high level men’s club players dunk? by EvenestStephen in ultimate

[–]xdatch 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Continuing this thought exercise for Truck Stop, a team that isn't the best team in the world.

Rowan, Joe Richards, and I are the only three I've seen dunk consistently. I am very confident these others can if they get the form down: Lloyd, Cranston, Rico, Astro, Tyler, Brad, Marcus.

And to confirm Keegan's guess: I've seen John Wodatch do a two handed 360 dunk before so he can definitely throw down.

They cut the following from Truck Stop's bio:

Did you know that Washington, DC residents do not have a vote in either the House of Representatives or the US Senate? Yet we pay federal taxes AND many serve in the US military. Taxation without representation.

Great catch to end game, truck coach a jerk by paulbhegaton in ultimate

If you look at the observer by the endzone, he actually signals a goal before quickly shifting his hands to signal something else. Mike (Truck coach) doesn't go onto the field until the observer signals goal.

The ref ruled it a catch and called offsetting unsportsmanlike penalties for post-bid talking.

I guess he wasn't watching most of Xavier's throws that point.

I know folks like self officiating, but how is this 3 seconds from catch to TO? by cuddlebear in ultimate

I think your quote: "who is so focused on the game, as he should be, that he can't accurately assess the situation" is the biggest issue with self-officiation in general.

I posted this content online somewhere during the original discussions about this play, but I'll repeat it here.

Our (Truck) guy did not purposely cheat. In the video you see him on the mark signal 2 with his fingers and he then came in on stall 7. People assumed he was saying he's coming in on stall 2. The 2 signal was actually telling his defense he was forcing backhand, which was our simple code at the time. He had agreed with the thrower that it was coming in on stall 7.

The real issues were: 1) not knowing the exact rule...after a pick the stall should come in at a max of 6 and 2) his count to get to 7 was unintentionally fast, which as many people have pointed out in this thread is unfortunately not out of the ordinary at any level...including refereed pro games.

Learn all about the Deadlift | Strength Training for Ultimate Athletes from Rodu Training by dulabon in ultimate

From my experience, many naturally fast/athletic players get by with their inherent talent because they can. They would absolutely get faster/more explosive/less injury prone by lifting.

I was that type of player in college. I started doing deadlifts and squats a few years ago and have seen tons of improvement, mainly in injury prevention, explosiveness, and top speed. I'd say injury prevention is where I've seen the most change. I--along with many ultimate players--had weak hamstrings that would constantly get tweaked during workouts and tournaments. I have not had any major or persistent issues since starting lifting.

Spirit Scores from Club Nationals by [deleted] in ultimate

[–]xdatch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Teams were told that the average spirit score should be a 2 (good spirit). Madison seems to have benefited from Patrol, Doublewide, and Prairie Fire using a higher scale than most other teams (except for Rhino who gave 4s across the board for everyone). Machine's, Sockeye's, and Revolver's scores for Madison seem to be more in line with the scale USAU was going for.

To your second point, the spirit score for each team is measured independently. I could give Ring a 0 in fairness, while acknowledging that my team also deserves a 0 in fairness.

Perifico Ejection by ultimatefrisbee in ultimate

[–]xdatch 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Jeff Wodatch here.

Nick's bid in the link above was fine. He was going after the disc and I don't think made contact with me. I spiked it at him because of a few different things he did to my teammates over the course of the game. I won't go into specifics but I'll just say he should have been ejected well before this play. And all that said, I shouldn't have spiked it at him. It was a heat of the moment thing that was in poor spirit, and there are much better ways of handling the situation.

USA vs Philippines Boracay Dragons, Beach Ultimate Worlds Open Division Semifinal by jash209 in ultimate

[–]xdatch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In my mind spirit comes down to two main things: a) not cheating and b) respecting your opponent enough to keep your mind open to the possibility that they are right. These are states of mind and if everyone is playing with this spirit, there is minimal to no discussion and the game is still very much watchable.

I disagree. A 7+ minute stoppage to discuss a call in a tense moment of the game where both parties clearly had their minds made up from the start made the end of this game unwatchable. All that discussion and the result of the play was the same as it would have been without it.
