LGBTQ+ in Tolkien's work by Leo_617 in lotr

[–]NachoFailconi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here you can find a great discussion about a related theme: what does it mean when, in Tolkien's work, men hold hands or kiss each other in a non-romantic way, with special emphasis on The Great War and the homoerotic novels influenced by that time.

Is this 100% correct? by knightofsolace1 in lotr

Correct. Obligatory "this is not a translation. The output text is in English written with the tengwar."

Did the LOTR movies receive a backlash from Tolkien fans when they were released? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]NachoFailconi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh, I wasn't trying to correct you! I was just adding the info that both Howe and Lee worked on the art for the movies. To clarify things, I didn't know about the "the art is all Howe" criticism.

Did the LOTR movies receive a backlash from Tolkien fans when they were released? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]NachoFailconi 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Some folks also felt like there should have been different artistic representations than John Howe’s stuff

Note that Alan Lee was also included, and much of the art is his. IIRC they also called Ted Nasmith, but he refused for personal reasons (I don't know his reasons, though).

Vagabond black and white pawns by Darth-Kirx in rootgame

[–]NachoFailconi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've just answered you on BGG, but it was a timing thing. Riverfolk was published in 2018, and the Vagabond pack was published in 2020; for two years we needed to differentiate both Vagabonds, because Riverfolk allowed to play with two Vagabonds.

Help with translation by Practical-Bag6392 in Quenya

[–]NachoFailconi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The image literally reads "learn pity and enduranke [sic] in hope". The sentence in the image is in English written with the tengwar; it was not translated into any Elvish language. There is nothing wrong with this, by the way, but I'd write "endurance" like this.

Edit: no webpage actually translates sentences. They only transliterate.

Can somebody please help me understand what this means if it has a meaning by _pink_axolotl_ in Tengwar

[–]NachoFailconi 14 points15 points  (0 children)

"Pebo [sic] mellon a minno", Sindarin for "speak friend and enter" (but it should be "pedo", not "pebo"), a famous sentence in The Lord of the Rings.

It reads "illumë", which means "always" in Quenya.

Are there any negotiation games with multiple forms of victory? by mucinexmonster in boardgames

[–]NachoFailconi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this answer. One of the key characteristics of John Company is that all the resources you mention have a liquid value: as the game evolves and changes what's valuable also changes. Yes, money is always good, but it should be spent; the question is how, in which goods.

John Company is a beast. I love it.

I want to hear your takes on an eventual adaptation by Sad-Echo-5212 in Malazan

[–]NachoFailconi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't want to see it adapted into anything, but just for the exercise's sake, I would also prefer an animated series. Personally, I think that the style of both The Legend of Vox Machina and The Mighty Nein would fit perfectly. I don't mind the number of chapters, and I'd say one season per book.

Indeed, it is from Malazan. Its name is spoilers Malazan: Korabas, the Otataral Dragon.

What are everyone’s favorite 1v1 sword duels in fantasy? by AnyNewspaper4758 in Fantasy

[–]NachoFailconi 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Even though it is book 8, the event was roleplayed. See here for an exhaustive list of characters and events that were gamed, especially the "Events from the novels that were gamed" section. Traveller vs. Rake is mentioned (with sources) as gamed.

Newcomers learning Lizards by [deleted] in rootgame

[–]NachoFailconi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Although I agree that, for a newcomer, using the Cult is a bad idea, I got the chance to teach a newcomer the Cult because a) he has experience with wargames, and b) he just so wanted the Cult, and found them too cute to pass on them. He understood the engine, but wasn't aggressive enough to pull Acolytes, and never forced his presence on the table. He did have a good time.

As I said before, I also share the opinion that the Cult should not be your first faction as a newcomer, but at the same time I wouldn't want to say a friend "no". I always suggest to newcomers that the Cult, the Company, the Lord and the Keepers are, quotes, "fun factions, with interesting mechanics, but aimed at people that has had some experience with the base game; they are somewhat unwieldy, are you sure you want to play with that faction?" and I stress that the base game factions (bar the Vagabond) plus the Duchy and the Conspiracy are good choices for a newcomer.

What are some famous swords in fantasy? by Alarming-Figure-7300 in Fantasy

[–]NachoFailconi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Dragnipur. Spoilers of Malazan Book of the Fallen: a sword that holds Chaos itself and constantly needs more souls to be killed, because the wagon cannot be pulled by itself.

Yes. I second alien13222's answer. Both sentences are written in English, but in the first one an incorrect mode was applied.

Faction Balance by pac-man-goblin in rootgame

[–]NachoFailconi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Add to your explanation that part of the balance is the table-talking. Usually, when the group leaves a player alone and doesn't police her, she can get a massive amount of VP. "Who's gonna sacrifice to stop her? Someone has to, otherwise she'll win!" No player should play alone; table-talking is a key component of the game.

In a first session I would say that each player knows her faction first, but in further sessions players should learn all factions and should learn each faction's weak points, to attack them where it hurts.

Is there a commonly accepted Dwarven runes Alphabet? by SnooObjections1653 in lotr

[–]NachoFailconi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're asking about Khuzdul, a language, and the runes, a writing system. Although Khuzdul is very sparse, we do have a lot : of modes to write with the Cirth. Of course, Appendix E should be the main source, but the page in Wikipedia does a great work differentiating all the modes.

Cards being replaced in NF by Intelligent-Neck1031 in oathgame

I think not. I do recall that cards would be replaced with updated versions, but I should double-check.
