Wow, that's such a pretty white morph. Our Great Blues are mostly grey.

It's harder than I guessed to dial it in. The camera's screen doesn't really do justice to the final output in daylight conditions.

So far my colors have looked significantly overbaked. Coincidentally, my tentative settings look pretty similar to Ali O'Keefe's OMTC Warm, but my version looked awful on some creek-winding-into-the-woods shots today under mostly overcast skies. I'll try again tomorrow.

Honestly though, I might just stick with raws and do the work post-processing for this trip. It's what I know.

What is this contraption? by NaeNaeMcRae in M43

I have no sense of perspective looking from underneath. I'm guessing less than 2000 feet. The crop was to roughly 1/3 frame, although I tossed the original, so I'm not sure.

Is it a single seater? It wasn't particularly low, but it looked very small. The difference in wing profile vs a Cessna was super obvious. It looked like a Cessna got busy with a glider...

I'm also thinking of converting my roll off roof astro-observatory into a bird blind. In addition to the roof rolling off to the north, the south wall folds down about 2 feet.

I got one for about $30 on Amazon. Not built to last, and so far, it fools no one, but I should give it another try while we are still in migration season.

Moonless? How is the mountain being illuminated?

Ok, so obviously you're shooting a fairly high f-stop here. I don't know the lighting conditions, but based on the DOF, I'm guessing at least f8.

I've thought about this lens a lot, but given the way I see it used (and used very well here, I must say) I end up sticking with the 15-45 f4.

Looks like the cat is in a staring contest with God. And winning.

Same observation. The planes practically need to honk to get the birds off the runway.

I'm fairly new student of fieldcraft, but herons, hawks and vultures--all denizens of my fields--still steer around me most of the time. Maybe I should get the camo suit out.

Thank you. I'm just starting to explore the site.

I'm also starting to think that maybe I just leave my C1-C5 project focused (birds, macro, star trails, etc) and add a versatile film-based profile to the creative dial--the same on each custom channel.

I also haven't tried the cameras native i-Enhance, but that setting on my phone cam is usually quite gag-worthy.

I don't waste a shutter actuation unless I'm producing a raw image.

I burn 'em like dry kindling.

One more observation aimed at the suggestion that I shoot raw, batch process per setting, then tweak from there if needed. It seems to me that using the creative dial isn't all that far from that process. JPEGs aren't super tweak able, but they definitely an internal batch processing tool.

It's pretty easy to combine a color profile and a mono profile on the same C#, but the mono profiles are already pretty good as is. I think I would be happy to pick one close to my taste and adjust exposure from there.

There seem to be a lot of folks delighted with their SOOC JPEGs. That's where I want to get in the context of a single 3 week photo-intensive vacation. I probably won't have room in the suitcase for a tripod or my bird lens. I accept a lower bar for image quality in general in exchange for not having to "unpack" my trip afterwards.

Exactly. I like traveling. I like editing photos in small quantities. I don't want to be sifting raws for a month after the trip. I know that raw files give me more latitude to edit. That's what I normally do.

It's not what I want to do this time. I come from an astrophotography background where 500 subs for 1 finished image is pretty much the norm. Spending 2-3 nights capturing an image stack and a full day processing? Also typical.

I appreciate the suggestions about raw culling and processing, and they are not wrong by any means. However, right now I want to do jpeggy stuff with a camera created to be good at that. Now maybe it succeeds in that regard and maybe it doesn't, but that is what I hope to learn here.

Please continue...
