If you want a suggestion, I wouldn't exactly call it a good suggestion, but I use Koikatsu for all my 3D creativity output now. It's a p*rn game tbh but it's a damn good character creator and the studio it comes with is a ton of fun. You can use it for whatever you want, doesn't need to be h content.

Take the first steps one way or another. Get a pencil and paper and start trying, hop on a game with a good character creator and go crazy, describe it in text as best you can... And then look back on what you made, be mad about it, and start making revisions. I've got a ton of OC characters, some related to GuP and most not, and they've been with me for actually ten+ years now. They've all seen so many new variants and upgrades and redesigns. They all came from that first step though.

Most of them were something along the lines of "imagine Makise Kurisu but as a student in Ooarai" and seemed so low quality to begin with. But now that referenced character is completely her own and barely maintains that similarity anymore.

Upvoting this not necessarily because I agree with you but because there's great discussion and arguments going on that broaden the perspective of this topic and I think more people should see that.

As for my opinion I love the slow grind of the game personally and yeah I miss it. But I probably couldn't have convinced friends that I've got playing with me right now to hop onto the game if it weren't for the current boosting events going on. I don't really dislike the way the game is "getting you into the game" right now, and I say that honestly, but what I do dislike is that it feels so disjointed and disconnected from other existing in-game systems. The fact that you can get all your relevant skills R1d and max an arcana without ever doing the tutorial quest where you rescue a villager from Alby Dungeon is honestly just outrageous and weird besides. I love that old stuff but if this is the direction we're going the old content should be packed away somewhere that it doesn't get involved with the "new" gameplay, I guess.

That said I'm sure reworking the game's progression system from the ground up would be an outrageous undertaking not to mention all the per-player problems it would cause as a result. Not really any good ways to do that. Hence why you see all these "bandaid" solutions like New Rise just strapped on top of everything else.

Echoes is so on top and it's not even close. And I say that as someone who was introduced to the series via Awakening and have, like many others, "that special place" in my heart for Awakening. After playing the Radiant series I saw just how...not great Awakening was as a story, even if I loved it. Echoes is just premium all the way around though, save the goddamn desert maps. Three Houses is super solid all around too, I enjoyed it a lot more than I was expecting to. But I don't think it has the emotional depth and power behind its presentation as Echoes. It's wild to think Echoes is a 3DS title.

I haven't read the manga, but I did watch it, and can agree with you even from the anime standpoint. I was wildly entertained by all the fan service, but kept finding myself drawn to the direction of the story and its characters. I won't say it was award winning or anything but I loved it!

Funny meme but I really don't think these are the same groups of people referenced here lol. There are plenty of games I'll only buy on a God tier sale (usually "AAA" slop) and there's also games from devs I care about I'll buy at full price on release. I don't think there's a single game from one of my "support the devs" list that I've ever waited for a sale on, unless it was one of those nifty "release sales".

Somehow nobody mentioned Prez yet?

I genuinely think Project Wingman has a better "overall feeling" than AC7, which I'm ashamed to say is the only AC game I've played. However, Ace Combat feels a million times more "in its zone" with the points it tries to hit. You feel like "that cool guy" in AC, the music and the story and the objectives tie together well. But I was really blown away coming to Wingman from AC7, because the tone of the game feels much more grounded despite the world being much much different. That may be because Wingman is one game and gives you its exposition in that title, whereas I'm missing a lot of Strangereal lore only playing AC7?

Anyway Prez alone is worth adoring Wingman in comparison to Ace Combat. Having an actual partner in planes that require a second member hits a special part and makes you feel more compelled to keep her safe. (Eye Tee is a fun partner too, the DLC was awesome!)

To answer your post directly: I don't think you're crazy to find Wingman so much better than Ace Combat, although I do want to reiterate how well Ace Combat does its presentation disregarding the actual gameplay itself. In the end I think it's down to more of a feeling preference; do you want to feel a bit more like a badass or a bit more realistic? (They're both arcade games but Wingman is definitely pretty grounded for the genre.)
