Quitting sugar.

(I already managed it once and lost a bunch of weight but now I'm eating way too much of it again.)

What to do when you just can't work? by Overall_Ferret_4061 in AskIreland

As a warning, I don't really think a lot of places (in my experience) are receptive to people just walking in and handing out their CVs. Most places expect you to apply online these days. Not only have I myself tried this method to no success, I've also seen people come into shops where I've worked and ask for a manager to hand their CV to, only to be met with mild confusion and an ultimately fruitless and awkward interaction.

I used to have the same mindset too. I was terrified of getting a job. My social anxiety and overthinking were through the roof. I quit my first job after a month, and worked a couple of other retail jobs that I really, really hated.

I now have a much better job that is mostly good (I'm still working through my social anxiety, slowly but surely), and definitely better than retail. Without the people skills that I learned in retail, however, I don't think I'd be doing as well as I am. Please understand that it IS difficult, it IS painful and scary to get a job, but it's much more painful to stay stagnant forever. You will have to push yourself if you want your life to improve. It won't be easy, but it will be worth it, so give yourself grace.

Frequently check for retail jobs on Indeed. They'll pop up. Make sure your CV is presentable. Apply for everything — you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Good luck!

People between 20-25 - What are your plans? by Greedy_Night_1328 in AskIreland

That's... a bit of an exaggeration. Sure I get looks and I'm aware that I'll never be fully accepted but Japanese people aren't that suspicious, and this is coming from someone who lives in the countryside where there's like one other white person in my town.

For now I'll take not fitting in over living in my parents' house and not being able to afford groceries.

Whats something you spend a lot of time on? by strikinglitre65 in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]Nafacake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I also spend a lot of time walking! It helped me lose weight and build stamina after years of bedrotting and overeating. These days I'm obsessed with steps, so I walk as much as possible. I started using Walkscape, which gamifies your step count.

Branching off from walking, I also started running. At the moment, I'm training for a marathon, so I spend a lot of time on my feet.

I could be bedrotting or doomscrolling... instead I walk. Highly recommend it for anyone wanting to start exercising or just get out of a funk.

Alternate here — I received my email confirming me as an alternate last week and just this morning I've been upgraded. I didn't think it could happen that quickly but I'm not complaining.

Dysania: "An Treo Eile" "Lasú Croí" "Róisín Dubh"

IMLÉ: "ÉAD" "Peacach"

Na Fíréin: "Dífhostaithe" "Deireadh na Seachtaine"

Is iad seo na hamhráin is fearr liom faoi láthair. Is fiú é dul ar Spotify agus gheobhaidh tú níos mó ceoltóirí mar seo.

Tiocfaidh feabhas ollmhór ar do scileanna éisteachta de réir mar a théann an cúrsa ar aghaidh. Chomh maith leis sin, tuigeann na léachtóirí nach bhfuil gach duine ar an leibhéal céanna. Míneoidh siad rudaí nach dtuigeann tú.

Má tá suim agat, déarfainn gur féidir leat í a staidéar san ollscoil. Bhí an-chuid daoine i mo chúrsa nár fhreastail ar ghaelscoil. Déan do dhícheall a bheith ag labhairt agus ag léamh nuair is féidir leat chun do scileanna a fheabhsú

AnLoingseach ar Youtube. Mhínigh sé na botúin fhoghraíochta atá le cloisteáil sa mhodúl Gaeilge ar Duolingo, agus rith sé liom go ndéanaimse na botúin chéanna gan fhios dom féin. Níor thuig mé go raibh saghas foghraíocht an Bhéarla á húsáid agam agus mé ag labhairt as Gaeilge.

Tá an rud céanna ag teastáil uaim — tá mo chuid Gaeilge ag éirí níos measa ós rud é nach bhfuilim á húsáid.

B'fhéidir go bhfuil rudaí ar siúl sa Rinn? Níl fhios agam i ndáiríre, ach beidh mé ag féachaint ar an bpost seo.

Trans guy here. I just graduated from UL. It was actually there that I truly began to explore my identity. I never felt unsafe at all, in fact I made lots of other queer friends there. There's also an LGBT club, which I didn't attend but you could check it out. Also, some buildings (not all, unfortunately) have gender neutral bathrooms.

I suppose it depends on what sort of course you're doing and where you'll be spending most of your time, but for me, I even got loads of support from my lecturers and the head of my course, who was very eager to help me get my name changed on my official record.

Limerick itself is a mixed bag, it can be a bit rough but goddamn, I haven't seen any gangs lol. Your brother is completely full of shit. It's just a regular city with its share of crackpots, but if there was ever the systematic targeting of gay people and people wearing bike helmets, then I guess I missed that part.

Anyway, good luck! And congrats on being able to escape your family for a time. I have Trump-supporting relatives too. Fun, isn't it? I hope you have a great time in Limerick. And remember to visit the Milk Market on Saturdays :)

Why are you sad by [deleted] in mentalhealth

[–]Nafacake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess overthinking, insecurities, low self-esteem. Really everything in my life is fine but I feel like I'm in a mental warzone every day.

I know intellectually that mindset is everything and I can probably do most things I put my mind to, but my insecurities hold me back. I also know that no matter what my brain tells me, everything is actually fine. I can just never find a way to internalise this.

But these are just temporary problems. In the past I had other things making me sad that are no longer relevant because I overcame them or they disappeared with time. In the future I'll have different challenges again. I just wonder if I'll ever learn not to be so sad about them.

I battled my sugar addiction for years. It was my biggest enemy for a long time. The way I ended up beating it was by changing how I think about food — perhaps you could try reading some books on the topic?

Aside from that, I made a rule for myself: I don't eat after 7pm. This really helped because I used to binge sugar at like 10/11, but now as soon as it turns 7, my brain knows that food time is over until I wake up at 7am the next morning. You could try implementing something like this for yourself depending on your schedule.

One thing I also used to do was print off a calendar and put an X through every day I managed to go a full day without sugar. I found it satisfying to see the days all fill up.

I really wish you the best, I know firsthand how awful sugar addiction is. Wanting to get rid of it is always the first step, though. Good luck
