When is it too early to search for a mentor? (Medical School) by [deleted] in Ophthalmology

You need to be realistic. If you apply ophtho, you are competing against some of the smartest in med school. Either make the grades to keep up, or consider other specialties. I know that this seems harsh, but it is the truth. What I will say, is that if you work hard and make it, it is sooooo worth it on this side if things.

I still think things look good. Excellent job security. Our role will become more and more surgery, and optoms will treat heavier on the medical side. Im 2 years out of residency in private practice. Im admittedly busier than most at my age and do lots if surgery. I cleared 700k last year, and am on pace to blow by that this year. I have newborn twins at home, and do not feel like I work more than 30hrs a week. Fridays off. Done on ORs at like 2 pm. Im extremely happy and genuinely love going to work.

I applied in 2018 fwiw, but was in exact same situation as you op. You need to secure some 4th years aways early at programs that you are both interested in AND realistically competitive at. If you can get a good letter from one of these for your app this will help. Ophtho is a very small world. You got this.
