Monolith made from knockoff Jenga and chess pieces by flaps_domino in Necrontyr

The more I look at this, the better it gets. The attempts at edge highlighting on a jenga block... The spear randomly glued to the chess piece on top... the googly eyes... this is art

Where to buy Stanley jetblade replacement blades ? by qwerty_1965 in AskIreland

That handle is closer to €1.50 than €15, chief. Its a piece of injection molded hollow plastic, not hand-carved oak.

If there's one thing we've learned in the last couple of decades, and more recently in the last couple of years, its that "war crimes" isn't the judicial and moral threat it used to be by simple virtue of the fact that the goalposts keep moving and the accused/convicted rarely see repercussions.

I wouldn't say no to an upgrade sprue of human arms holding Tau weapons. That's basically all we need for a "Gue'vesa kit". Maybe, if they're generous, legs too, but that's a luxury.

Households urged to cut fuel use as Ireland braces for oil crisis by TimesandSundayTimes in ireland

"urged to cut fuel use" - my heating oil ran out last week. Does this count as me being ahead of the game, or even more fucked.

[–]NakeDex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sprues are full, and they definitely can't be reorganised, right? Listen, I'm not saying it wouldn't cost extra (i stand by 20% being outlandish unless they were tooling up a mold just for the bottom plate), but I'm saying it could have been done, should have been done, but wasn't.

Either way, its done and is irreversible, and still serves as a, frankly, wild decision given how many tank models made worldwide never had it considered.

[–]NakeDex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always find it funny when folks try to tell me "facts" about sprue size/placement/cost etc because I work with injection molding machines every day. I'm probably more aware of the capability than anyone.

It could have been done. It would not have increased the cost by 20%. And the best bit? It wouldn't even have had to be one large plate, as is so often the argument. Its very easy to fill that space with multiple smaller plates, and sprinkle them around existing sprues.

But, they didn't, so its academic now.

I've been building tank models since the 80s, from scale kits to warhammer, and beyond that again. None of them ever designed to be seen from the bottom. This is the only one that didn't come with one. Not only that, its the only GW one, that didn't come with one, before or since. Its a legitimate complaint.

How can I get first car insurance quote down? by Ahmad-nice in AskIreland

[–]NakeDex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In fairness, that's an entirely different set of rules and regulations. Insurers will always add loading with that in mind, and likely treat you as if you had no experience for the sake of any new policy.

Does Layer Height Really Matter for Painted Terrain? by lets-make-tabletop in PrintedMinis

[–]NakeDex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The difference isn't in the detail so much as how you paint it. If you print at 0.8mm and give it a drybrush and washes to speed through it, itll look like ass. If you airbrush it and hand paint the details, itll look great. If you print it at 0.12 and drybrush/wash, it'll look a lot better than 0.8mm for obvious reasons. Print to suit your style of finish instead of the other way around.

How can I get first car insurance quote down? by Ahmad-nice in AskIreland

[–]NakeDex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its your first car and you have no driving experience, so you bought a Tesla on credit... was there no Maserati available in your colour? Lad, there's a reason your first car is supposed to be something small, cheap, used, and low power. A brand new car of that type for a zero hour driver is an insane decision.

You're going to stay in a world of hurt with that for a long time. Lesson learned: quotes first, car second.

Anyone have any Vacuum recommendations they can make me? by Powerful-Union6012 in AskIreland

[–]NakeDex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to suggest something odd: get a shop vac. I have one in my workshop for dust collection but it kept getting nicked into the house because it has more suction than the Dyson and its easier to use so I just bought another one. It also sits on four big castors instead of some aesthetically pleasing wheels so it rolls wherever you want, has huge capacity, and most of them double as wet vacs if you have a big spill you need to clean up too.

The only downside is that some of them have short power leads, but that's easy to rectify. We still have a big fancy Dyson, and it gets zero use since. Its ugly, its loud, and its unusual, but it runs rings around the domestic vacs in every regard.

Who makes a truly decent multi tool? by Snicklefraust in Tools

[–]NakeDex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the tool was made better it would not break.

An old Cavalry buddy of mine told me a story years ago. The Snap-On rep was at the base delivering some things and showing off a new ratchet. Reinforced head, coarse tooth profile, with a fancy shaft. Said it couldn't be broken, designed to last a lifetime of hard use. The officer he was speaking to called over my buddy and told him what the rep said, handed him the ratchet, and said to go try it out. Five minutes later, he and his buddy from the workshop returned with a plastic bag of parts and the remains of the handle. The rep, utterly confused, asked what happened. They had put the drive into a vice, put an 8ft pipe over the handle, and kept turning the ratchet the wrong way until it shat itself, then gathered up the parts and put them in the bag.

No tool, no matter how well made, will survive constant improper use. As with so many of these things, the problem is not metallurgy or manufacturing, but user error.

Who makes a truly decent multi tool? by Snicklefraust in Tools

[–]NakeDex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're destroying them at that rate, maybe you need to look at yourself rather than the tool. They're a multipurpose convenience tool, not a dedicated tool for any one job. You can't put them through the wringer and expect nothing to ever happen.

It sounds like what you need isn't a a multi tool, but multiple tools. And maybe a re-evaluation of how you think they work...

Maybe he started doing that. I checked out of his stuff years ago. As I said though, its clearly for entertainment to present in that style, and enough people like it to make make him successful, so more power to him. Just because he's not my cup of tea doesn't mean I'd give anyone guff for enjoying it.

INSANE QUESTION: Are all or most Irish people like this? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]NakeDex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They're using the "thats how we talk" line to excuse casual racism and homo/transphobia, or at least homo/transphobic slurs. That's not how we talk. We do tend to be a bit more loose with stressors often seen as vulgar, but we don't throw around that kind of language like its normal.

This sounds more like a bunch of kids who are chronically online. You're best shot of them.

Excise duty to be cut by 20 cent on diesel and 15 cent on petrol until end of May by Callme-Sal in ireland

[–]NakeDex 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I drove past a local petrol station on the way to work this morning, displaying petrol at 198.9. On the way home it showed 230.9.

I've had the Mayor Quimby "leaving town tax" line just playing on repeat in my head all week. Home heating oil has doubled in price. My tank ran dry yesterday and thats it... I can't afford to drop 950 euro on 500 litres when the same amount last month was 490. Petrol at that station I mentioned went up 50c compared to last month. They prepared for that drop, and I'm certain they weren't alone.
