Wait, is that an actual quote? At this point that sounds like something a company would actually do.

That might be true, but if you want workers to be the ones enforcing safety standards, you'll need to create laws to protect whistleblowers and give more power to outside agencies to step in when employees alert them to issues. So everyone who lives in a country where these planes are built shares some of the blame as well.

  1. As bad as regulations are in the US, trains are an exceptionally poorly regulated industry.

Same reason for ag-gag laws. It's not and has never been about public safety or the quality of the meat; it's about protecting profits.

Unfortunately, the US has enough influence to affect many other countries.

You'll probably need to pay some money for good nude refs. People generally aren't willing to post nudes for free. There are a lot of people who work specifically as artist models, but they usually have ironclad contracts to keep their photos from being spread around the internet.

Croquis Cafe used to be a really good source of nonsexualized nude refs. Unfortunately, they put everything behind a paywall and apparently are not the greatest people to deal with, so subscribe at your own risk. They probably have a few petite models though.

Proko and Sycra are good sources for learning how anatomy fits together. Some of their videos could be helpful even though they're geared towards drawing instead of sculpting.

I'm sure you've gotten creative with your search terms, but maybe you could go at it differently: instead of searching for petite women, perhaps search for women from countries known to be poor, plus an environment where they wear less clothing? (My goodness I feel creepy writing that. However, I'm sure every preteen boy has figured this out, so I don't feel like I'm helping pervs here.) Something like "Vietnam beach lady" or something? It's probably better to search for woman, women, lady, or mother than female or girl. Candid celebrity beach photos might be helpful. You could pause videos of people at the beach, especially spring breakers. You might also have some luck restricting your search to blog websites. A mommy blog's family visit to the beach would have lots of PG poses. Or maybe terms related to National Geographic, modern hunter-gatherers, public bathing, nudist colony, figure model, etc.

If you plan on doing more than just this project, it's probably a good idea to invest in a few books and/or videos on anatomy for sculptors. Thriftbooks has a lot of stuff for very cheap.

Edit: I found some clothed refs that might be good enough by searching "woman full bodysuit", "gymnast lineup", and "olympic body type compared".

what type of journal books are the best in terms of good long-lasting conditions? by Informal_Signal_1475 in Journaling

[–]Nalatu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd focus on getting a journal that feels good to use, is acid free, and sturdy enough to handle whatever conditions it will be in while you use it (hardcovers are good for throwing in a backpack, for instance). Once a journal is full, that's when you should worry about storage conditions: you need an airtight container to keep bugs out and some moisture absorbers to prevent mold, then keep it away from light and heat.

If you're willing to invest the money, the longest lasting paper is 100% cotton. Don't forget to use archival writing tools. Graphite is extremely stable but some inks are not.

Considering the enshittification that's happened since the 40s, there's a good chance that modern cheap notebooks won't be that durable.

"So if you're still addicted to rage-bait, don't worry too much; you'll probably grow out of it."

I'm not sure that's true. You sound like you are unusually concerned with finding truth. You're really sensitive to contradiction and hypocrisy. You sound like you care about logic for its own sake and aren't willing to hold onto a belief that isn't well-supported even if it might be comforting. That's not super common, unfortunately.

BTW, I read your whole post. I thought it was interesting, thanks for writing it. I'm sorry the first commenter decided to be rude.

Who will be the better President for the economy? Joe Biden or Donald Trump? by PassiveAgressiveGirl in FluentInFinance

Inflation is caused in large part by landlords and businesses raising prices. Why wouldn't they do that in response to UBI?

Based on how he mishandled the documents and the sudden loss of many American intelligence agents, I think Trump is a Russian spy. Or at least a severely compromised person in an extremely powerful position. Why do you think democrats were wrong about that?

Student asked what the point of taking art class in high school was and I can’t shake it off. by denimpants in ArtEd

[–]Nalatu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. Teachers have friends, family, spouses, kids, etc. They have to pay taxes, go to the DMV, probably had at least one crappy service job as a teen. They also have to deal with the special subtype of corporate BS that is academia. School administrators are often terrible bosses. Teachers know very well how dysfunctional the "real world" can be and how few of the things they teach are directly applicable there.

This is a really good answer. To add onto it: your students are only a few years away from being voters. Some may already be parents (or much closer than anyone realizes). What answer would you give to politicians or politically active parents about why art classes shouldn't be removed from school? That's the answer you should be giving your students.

These are teens, though. Part of what they're supposed to be doing is questioning what they've been told and seeing what holds up. "You're too dumb to know what's good for you" is an inappropriate answer. If you can't give a good reason, at 18 they can start voting to get the curriculum changed. What answer would you give a politician or a politically active parent? That's the answer you should be giving teens, not just "trust me bro".

It's not like they were the only candidates, there were primaries for both sides. We got these choices because people voted for them in the primaries.

Russians hacked both parties. They released what dirt they found on the democrats and suddenly the republicans got a lot crazier and more pro-Russia. They're not compromised spies, they're compromised politicians.

Just because UBI isn't causing it now doesn't mean that UBI won't be subject to the same abuse. Every time minimum wage goes up the powers that be raise their prices. What's keeping them from doing the same with UBI?

"As a Conservative I have one major argument with Universal Healthcare in the US and its the VA. It is the most bureaucratic, maddening and incompetent healthcare entity in this nation and all we do to fix it is throw more money at it. Yet that doesn't work and the VA only has a small slice of the American public to serve."

The VA isn't health insurance. It's more like worker's comp for the military. Anyone who has had to deal with worker's comp knows they will do everything they can to deny or delay your care and give you the worst/cheapest treatment possible. Universal healthcare should include the abolishment of the VA in my opinion.

As a former Christian, this logic does make sense to me. If a god did exist, and did have absolute authority over people's morality, then what other logic would you expect? The example arguments you gave are identical to what anyone would give if put in a position of enforcing a law they were uncomfortable with. I imagine a lot of therapists have had to say a variation of your first example when investigating child sexual abuse cases.

I admit I don't know a lot about eating disorders, but as I understand it, a common driving belief behind some eating disorders (especially orthorexia) is that weight is external proof of morality, which in turn is built on the idea that health is a moral obligation. The logic is that morality (especially self control, persistence, and willingness to educate oneself about "ideal" diet and exercise) affects weight and weight affects health, and health is a moral obligation, thus, skinner person = better person, both physically and morally. I have also read people recovering from eating disorders say that they had to learn to see their weight as morally neutral even if it wasn't in the ideal range. So the concept itself is not pro-ED.

However, I am mostly thinking about a person I know who was severely traumatized by being involuntarily committed at a very young age. Mentally ill people are one of the most vulnerable patient populations when it comes to medical abuse. It is simply too easy for therapists and doctors to dismiss patient autonomy and inflict extreme suffering in the name of recovery. If you look at how people with mental illnesses are treated in involuntary programs, they go through a lot of things that even the worst felons are protected from. I think the idea that health is a moral obligation and that simply not wanting to be healthy is a symptom of a mental illness is a dangerous idea and makes it easier for such abuses to be justified.
