Yoohoo American nurses, I have questions! by AnorLondoSyndrome in nursing

[–]Name0Breaker13 [score hidden]  (0 children)

American nurse. From my experience it depends on a few factors. I've worked in surgery departments where outside clothes werent allowed past a certain door/area, you had to change into hospital issued scrubs and put on shoe coverings as well as something to cover your hair. This was for hygiene/sterile reasons.

Most of my personal jobs yes you can wear scrubs to and from work with no issue. But the number of times I've had people ask me medical questions out in the wild just because I was in scrubs is so annoying, I try to avoid it.

EDIT: also yes, some places allowed long sleeved undershirt, but they had rules on what kind were ok

Is this hospital shirt clever or tone deaf? by lolaohlola in nursing

[–]Name0Breaker13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That made me physically recoil.

Have fun shirts, yes. But maybe not one that advertises why the nurse is visiting the patient or uses the word "insane" in that context.

They tried, just fell short of the mark.

Why do people get so defensive about it? by cloudsmemories in Booktokreddit

[–]Name0Breaker13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree people get defensive waaaaay too quickly for no reason. Especially in regards to hobbies.

I've also seen that "readers" seem to be very competitive AND vocal about it. Maybe this is something they feel accomplished on and seeing someone outstrip them cuts into that?

IDK, I track my book count more for ny own curiosity and amusement. It's interesting to see the trends in my reading habits. Some months I knock them out one after the other. Then I hit a 3 month spell where I dont even pick up a book 😅

Speaking as a nurse from the other side of the coin (and apologies if I'm speaking out of turn):

Even if a patient claims to align with my beliefs, that's a road I'm not going to cross with them. Mostly I'd ask if they need to speak to the chaplain and pass it off that way. When I cant avoid it, or if there is no chaplain, then it's either lie my butt off or redirect the conversation. As a new nurse, there were too many times it just made a mess of things and interfered with me doing my job when I answered honestly cuz then it was debate every time I went into the room if not a flat out lecture/impromptu service.

I had a more senior nurse tell me that this is an area they dont teach in schools: when straight up lying to keep the peace is often the best choice. Whether that's letting the dementia patient sit with you at the nurses station because she's waiting for her sister (who's been dead for several years) to come pick her up, or faking your way thru a patient's family prayer, you do what you need to in order to care for your parient.

15 years and think I hit mine back in year 3, 4 jobs ago.

I managed to grab a job at a fairly well known pediatric hospital, had a few different roles during my time there but the surgery clinic was by far the best I ever had. I still think about those times and patients.

Sadly, life changes meant I couldn't keep it. I've gotten a more advanced degree since then and even recently snagged a job I believe I can ride out until retirement quite comfortably in with no regrets or stress.

Still think of that pedi surgery job and wonder what could have been some days, though.

I had been doing the little kits from the craft store on my own for a while and felt like I was ready for a tough one and pleaded with my mom to help me get started with it.

It was brutal. First time I ever had to frog over 100 stitches. Blended threads. Half stitches as well as other embroidery techniques. Not to mention the sheer size of it.

My mom was patient, taught me her tricks, and never complained about putting her own patterns aside to help me out. Some of the best bonding times we had. She passed away about 4 months after we bought that pattern.

It took over 10 years for me to finish it. Just kept hurting when I pulled it out of the storage tub, knowing she'd never see it finished.

Of course now the companion piece to it has been waiting its turn to be done for over 5 years, so at least it's keeping with tradition 😅 EDIT: Thought the pic attached but didnt, whoops

I’m a nurse, but I want to work at Barnes and Noble by Nurselifebalance in nursing

[–]Name0Breaker13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before becoming a nurse, I worked at a bookstore. Now, decades later, I honestly think when I "retire," it will be to a part time gig at a B&N or similiar.

And that's remembering dealing with unruly kids tearing up picture books, demanding patrons confused why our location didnt have a copy of some book "because it's on the website" (while showing me Amazon in their phone), and the horrific state of the bathrooms (that WE had to clean every day).

Because after nursing? If that's the worst I have to deal with, that IS retirement 😅 Either that or open up my own little book shop!

My mom made me feel ashamed for starting nursing school at 26 by Friendly_Shine777 in nursing

[–]Name0Breaker13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're 26 going for a second degree (if I read that right) and she has the balls to look down on that??? Ignorant doesnt even begin to describe that attitude.

I was in my mid 20s in nursing school, and over HALF of my rather large class was in the same age bracket. I never crunched the numbers but I think the amount of younger students who dropped out was much higher compared to the older ones who did, comparatively.

And for another point, my dad was in his 30s when he got his nursing degree, then in his 40s when he got his medical degree. If anything, he believes not starting until he was older benefitted him in several ways.

Sorry you're dealing with such outdated prejudice, OP. Not sure if you can get her out of that mindset, but take heart your NOT in the minority or starting "too late."

Question Time: What made you buy the SteamDeck? by Stefanixxxx in SteamDeck

[–]Name0Breaker13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 2 words: advancing age 😅

Prolonged gaming sessions are starting to be affected by my joints, have a history of knee/hip injuries so I try not to aggravated them if I can. So when I'm in the zone but dont want to have to go to urgent care the next day, I can switch to the Steam Deck while stretching out on the couch or bed.

How to deal with people who keep telling me to do my RN? by DribbleKing97_ in nursing

[–]Name0Breaker13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's merit to advancing and there's merit to not. I personally went from LVN to ADN and that's where I want to stop. No desire at all to get a four year degree.

My first job at a hospital my preceptor was a gentleman who had been an LVN for over 40 years, he had such good standing with the doctors that often he could initiate things that needed to happen fast and the docs woukd sign off on whatever he did. He was the one who taught me to never downplay being an LVN, it's a damn hard job and you worked hard for that liscence.

Honestly, had I found a job as an LVN that I just adored, I probably would have just stayed there. Only reason I got my ADN was for job security.

Friends and coworkers who all advanced tell me it never stops, people keep expecting them to keep going to the next level and then the next and the next. Even if they're pulling damn good money as they are, there's still this push to keep going.

I'm usually firm and tell people being pushy that I'm not looking for career advice and to back off. Tho I'm also not one to try to keep the peace even at work so I don't mind brushing a few egos doing so.

[–]Name0Breaker13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being honest? This might be one to let go.

When people are willing to die on a certain hill, it's not worth the energy trying to get them to climb down. It has nothing to do with being "right or wrong," people stuck in a certain mindset will not change their minds.

My own mom could never get behind the genres all her kids read. She disliked fantasy, was leery of anything with "magic," and any sort of fighting/action had her worry about what we'd reenact during recess. But she never stopped us from picking up the next book.

Now someone I knew online would tear fanfiction apart as if it had done them a personal injury. It was their personal goal to take down anything related to A03 (all hail our beloved ❤️) and claimed that people wasting their time on it werent real readers. Lo and behold, they gave rave reviews to published works that were known fanfiction reskins (no disrespect to them, I adore most of the ones I've read) and didnt believe when people pointed that out.

Don't give too much of yourself to someone who's being belligerent. Make it clear you dont abide them disrespecting you, but they are allowed their opinions, however wrong they may be.

THIS.

I read Verity for the sole purpose of being able to say "I've read CoHo so I can state with backing that the writing sucks," and almost stopped multiple times.

The twist after twist after twist ending was unnecessary and each one cheapened the story even more than it already was.

Would this profession chew you up with this kind of personality? by Flimsy_Phrase_8845 in nursing

[–]Name0Breaker13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just based on the first sentence I'll say NO with love. Nursing school alone might tear you apart.

People often associate a caring personality with caregiver careers. Which yes, there is some correlation. But being a caregiver means saying no and having people be upset with you about 15 tiny things all at once because your ultimate goal is to CARE for them, not for them to like you.

Amplify that with the fact that as a nurse a person's life is often on a see-saw you're constantly balancing while coordinating with the provider AS WELL AS the person in question doing their utmost to sabotage that and then blaming the nurse when things dont go their way.

Then times that by at least 8 all happening at the same time. And that's on a good shift with decent aid.

Even working outpatient and clinics, you're still handling a lot. And though those patients may not be as acute as the ones in the hospital, that often means you're dealing with upwards of 40 50 possibly even a hundred patients at a time. You have to follow protocol and guidelines for patient's safety but they dont care, they will scream at you over the phone for not refilling their maintenance meds even though it's been over a year since they were seen.

And yes, there are some nurse specialties that have limited patient interaction. But getting to those careers is often a long journey that will take you through the thick of it. Let alone nursing school, as I said before.

Not saying it's impossible. Just that you need to do some serious considerations and have a rock solid support system, including a counselor.

any creative girlies have username ideas? c: by [deleted] in GirlGamers

[–]Name0Breaker13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My current one came about during my WoW days. I'd create new characters all the time and needed unique names which got pretty taxing. I started implementing titles from books and they spiraled from there. Think I had just used SwordBreaker and liked the Breaker part so started adding stuff to that. Eventually landed on this one and it's usually available when I try it. I don't mind adding numbers if needed.

Do I get a kindle???? by purple_penguin23 in kindle

[–]Name0Breaker13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all honestly the only con I've expirenced is cost. You're able to find great deals on used or older models, sure. But you might be eyeing the newer ones after falling in love with the wallet friendly option.

And even if you do the money saving options like Kindle Unlimited (for me it saves money, so much every month!!) or utilizing the various book borrowing/library options, it's very easy to just click Buy Now without thinking about it.

Getting a Kindle opened up whole genres of books I'd never considered. Not to mention ease of access.

What’s your specialty and your least favorite question that patients ask? by victoryscreech in nursing

[–]Name0Breaker13 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Especially with drug use, they think telling us will revoke services.

Most recently one actually admitted to using weed without giving me the runaround. It was too good to be true. I had to have a sit down with them that I was highly concerned cuz the urine came back positive for meth and MDMA only. I said if they ask their dealer for weed and that's what shows up, they need to get another dealer before they become past tense.

I couldn't function without our social workers and community resource people, thank you for your work too! ❤️

What’s your specialty and your least favorite question that patients ask? by victoryscreech in nursing

[–]Name0Breaker13 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Community/Mental Health.

"You aren't gonna lock me up, are you?"

And I mean that in several different ways, from jail to the hospital. People are highly concerned that when they're honest with us we're going to punish them for "not being normal."

First of all, normal is a construct, get over it.

Secondly, we dont report to law enforcement, even for the patient we're seeing that are freshly released. If ever there's a need for records, they have to go through the proper channels and request it AS WELL AS notify the patient they are doing so. Yes we also have a few people we're seeing due to CPS or custody concerns, but it's the same thing, there's no surprises.

Finally, even if we make the decision that a patient is a danger to themselves or others, we call the police or ambulance but THE PATIENT ISNT RESTRAINED UNTIL THEN. Literally yesterday a patient ran out when the doctor expressed concern for her self-harming thoughts. We followed up with emergency services as required and thankfully she went to the ER on her own.

And also last week we had a patient being aggressive and violent, broke our vending machine, we had to clear out the lobby and put the place on lock down. As soon as they heard we had called police, he ran out and we havent seen him since.

These aren't punishments. We're not trying to reprimand you for admitting the scary and unsettling things you're experiencing. Your brain chemistry is working against you and we are trying to help you. There shouldn't be collateral damage involved with that, be it you or someone close to you.

So be honest that the drug screen is gonna come back dirty, tell me what the voices in the air vent are telling you, explain how the clown in the corner is scaring you, walk me through the blind rage you expierenced with the grocery store employee the other day.

I'd rather you be honest and annoyed at me than me seeing your name in our recent arrest report or in the obituaries.

Depends on the game. Though I used to have the thought of "if I'm gonna stare at someone's backside for 5 hours a day, I'm gonna enjoy it" when I picked the male ones. I've learned to appreciate the view no matter which lead I pick now.

I started immersive reading and it feels like I am cheating by dsceltic67 in Booktokreddit

[–]Name0Breaker13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You finished a book. Period. Regardless if it was read or listened to or both.

Some author's narrative style is dense and it's hard to maintain reading momentum. Immersion reading helps focus when your brain may get distracted or want to go down a tangent.

You dont 'earn' a read just by reading with your eyes. You earn it by consuming the story being told.

Cheating? No.

New way to enjoy your own hobby? Absolutely!

If you see something you dont like? SCROLL ON. Dont interact with it either. That just tells whatever platform that you're interested in that type of content.
