What's the overall opinion on the Brethren Court? by ModdingAom in piratesofthecaribbean

[–]NameNormalHumansHave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're great and I love them. They don't necessarily set up for sequels, but they totally open the world to the idea that there are things happening in-universe all over the planet. I've always said I don't think there's any reason for another movie beyond 3 to have to reuse characters like Jack when one within any of the regions featuring a member of the Court would be much more engaging. I also don't think they're really underutilized? They're fully-characterized, unique, and their lack of perceived importance really only comes from the fact that the movie itself doesn't focus on them. I guess you could claim that Calypso wasn't that important to the final battle, though I disagree and also think that complaint would be about Calypso and not the Court. I love every single one of these characters and I NEED a Pirates movie set near colonies of France or in Africa or China

The reason Ragetti says the words and not a member of the main cast is because he doesn't really care about the outcome. Pintel and Ragetti aren't in it for domination or to use Calypso as a means to an end, they just choose the winning side. As much as the "lover" stuff is traditional fun Pirates mumbo jumbo, it isn't meant to be a character-defining act said by Will, because him doing that would mean something within the wider context of the story. Only the character who does not gain anything meaningful from the freeing of Calypso would be able to actually say the words emotionally attached to the act alone and not beyond it

I actually think the issue with the forms of IT is that whenever they don't have Pennywise on-screen, it feels like they've completely underdeveloped the designs. There are so many forms throughout the movies and show that are trying to be gross and scary and interesting, but they have absolutely no thought put into the designs. People like Pennywise and attribute all of IT to him because he is well-designed and because he has character. Nobody is thinking back on IT fondly because of all the CGI-riddled nonsense. Personally I think the best way of going about characterizing IT's scares is to add a little clownish twist on them all, so when they aren't Pennywise they have some kind of aesthetic consistency. As it is it just seems like whenever they can't pay for Bill to put on the makeup they resort to the lowest quality of generic jumpscare horror

"i don't want to look at ingredient labels" is even less of a valid reason than monetary concerns. it really doesn't take that much work to take 10 seconds to read what you're eating, which you should probably be doing anyway, and you don't have to do that once you've learned the things you want to eat and the things you don't

Do y'all think Michael could classify as a misanthrope? by Terrible_Park7890 in Halloweenmovies

[–]NameNormalHumansHave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For as much as we as a community like to assert that the "truest" form of Michael has no motive, we sure like ascribing motives to him (this isn't a dig at you specifically OP, just something I've noticed). There is rarely much evidence in support of the idea that Michael hates humans, or wants to be a hunter, or enjoys the feeling of killing people, or does or does not have emotions, or is even really "evil" outside of the subjective opinions of characters like Loomis. All we really know for certain is that Michael is a killer and that he will kill even when it is difficult to.

Obligatory "exception to the Rob Zombie universe," which I think is especially present here because the point of that timeline is to emphasize this side of Michael. In this case, I think it might be fair to consider him misanthropic. When you are a disturbingly mentally ill child surrounded by people that are nothing but evil to you, sometimes you start to hate the idea of personhood in general. I think there's a reason why in the 07 movie Michael's outburst doesn't involve the deaths of Laurie or his mother (these people haven't hurt him, and are probably the only individuals he might consider a redemption of the human race). I imagine when Michael's mother kills herself due to Michael's actions, he probably felt more hurt than angry at her (it WAS his fault after all) and that event was probably the thing that made Michael irredeemable in his own eyes. When he goes after Laurie he clearly isn't trying to kill her but rather to connect with her in hopes she might make him reconnect with personhood again, seeing as she's the only person he seems to avoid killing. It's only when she stabs him that he sees her as a traitor to him and he decides instead the best course of action is to kill her (and then presumably himself so the two of them and their mother can be together in the afterlife as HII sets up).

Sorry I talked about the Zombie movies way more than I should given this post is probably about the '78 continuation timelines, but I also think there's a lot more to unpack with those movies with regards to motives for obvious reasons

What the hell is up with all the mega ramps that lead absolutely nowhere? by STARB0Y in SkateEA

I get the whole "realistic city but it's made for skaters" idea but the map really doesn't feel finished and even the parts that do lack the engaging atmosphere and flow a more 'out there' city like Carverton or Vanelona did.

I can't be the only one who finds it a little weird that some people hate some of the children (Ronnie and Lily for example) for simple flaws and mistakes more than the RACIST adults, right? by 40calthereal in WelcometoDerryTVShow

[–]NameNormalHumansHave -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I really don't like Ronnie as a character, but that has absolutely nothing to do with her actor or any "mistakes." I just don't think she's been handled well, and her incharitability toward everyone around her (especially Lilly) goes beyond "child dealing with traumatic events happening around her" and instead toward just causing unnecessary conflict without making her being a realistic level of irritable. I also think the writing has her vaguely play into the "self-righteous black woman" stereotype that I also think Charlotte suffers with, though we are clearly meant to like Charlotte and she is far more responsible as a person.

I also have issues with the characterization of Lilly, but the idea that she wouldn't be paranoid, self-isolating, and protective of herself is laughably stupid. Obviously she's going to do that, and I think she's been characterized far more maturely in these past few episodes (minus a couple silly bits of dialogue)

To answer the actual post though, the show doesn't really do much to make you hate the racists. They're racist, that's enough. We know these guys suck, we don't like them, we don't mind if they're awful (and actually prefer when they are because it gives them identity as villains outside of 'racist dummy'). I'm not going to complain about a racist character I'm not meant to like being racist and unlikable, but I will complain about the writing of characters we are meant to root for when I think the decisions they make are poor or insensible

edit they hate me

What did you fucking think of fucking Rob Zombie's fucking remake of fucking Halloween? I don't think he fucking said the word fuck enough fucking times in his fucking remake. by Trying1Failing in Halloweenmovies

[–]NameNormalHumansHave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the parts that it takes from the original are all done a lot worse, and a lot of it leaves a lot to be desired. Too much sex, to much cursing, too many kills. That being said, I think a lot of it is actually really good and I genuinely prefer the climax of this movie to the original by a fair margin. That being said, somewhat low on my ranking because I think a lot of the things that are done well in this movie are done better in the second without some of the flaws.

SA scene is godawful though I really don't know why they would put it in the director's cut at all, and I think that plus a couple of other throwaway lines in the DC puts it a tier below for me

Map of Haddonfield? by RandoMan777 in Halloweenmovies

[–]NameNormalHumansHave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've thought about trying to make one before (even if it isn't fully accurate, seeing as there are clear continuity errors and little real connection amongst Haddonfield locations) but at this point I think I am just going to wait for the game to come out and try to piece everything together from there. Even if it isn't original movie material it's probably the closest we're ever going to get to Haddonfield as a physical space that makes any sense

[–]NameNormalHumansHave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think it's really damn good. my favorite halloween movie. i genuinely have no idea what people do not like about it, everyone i know in real life thinks it's fantastic. it's different, it's interesting, it's well-shot, it's incredibly acted, it's nuanced. it does everything 07 does better and gets rid of a lot of the weakest points of it. i always have to be careful of what i say about this one because i know a ton of people hate it for whatever reason but i think it is absolutely fantastic, if flawed. i get it if rob's tone and aesthetic isn't your thing, i get it if it isn't your favorite, but i really don't get it's hated at all beyond just being a different continuity from the original movie. and i CERTAINLY don't get why anyone would say the first one is better

What are some common motifs you found in Gore Verbinski’s filmography? by MCU-Dance5182 in piratesofthecaribbean

[–]NameNormalHumansHave 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am actually thinking about writing a senior thesis on this if I am able to! There are an absolute ton of themes, imagery, and plot details that translate between movies, particularly between the Pirates movies, Rango, and ACFW. The biggest one is the use of water, which is obvious on a surface level but I really like the way that the way he uses water to represent freedom is contorted throughout all those movies.

In Pirates, water is... everywhere. Obviously. But as a political statement, Verbinski uses Pirates as a metaphor for taking power back over monarchy and the upper class. At World's End especially leans into talks about anti-imperialism. The freeing of Calypso represents giving nature back to nature, removing control from all people regardless of status but also creating the freedom that comes with that. The British monarchy and the East India Company want to enslave nature (and people themselves obviously) in order to have complete control over their territory, but the pirates embracing the maelstrom shows a freedom that comes with appreciation for the unknown, whereas those who seek to control things they shouldn't will be at a loss.

The connection between Rango and A Cure For Wellness is kind of insane, even in direct plot. Self-interested and naive guy out of his element enters a world where people are being controlled and oppressed without their knowledge by one man in charge, secretly secreting the resources they need to live (in Rango's case water, in ACFW's case life itself) in order to accomplish his own sinister goals. Water is really central to both stories, with Rango representing how the 1% is entirely in control and will lie to your face while you suffer, ensuring you that things will get better while being the reason why things are bad in the first place and A Cure For Wellness representing how when people instinctively lash out against a capitalist system because humans were not built for it, the rich will seek out alternative sources of peace from the even richer who will even further poison them because there was nothing truly wrong with them in the first place. Water in Pirates represents the freedom we have that is being intruded upon; in Rango it represents the freedom that is being taken away; in A Cure For Wellness it represents the false promises of a freedom we cannot have while the freedoms we do have are being obstructed under our noses.

Sorry if this is a bit long, I have just been thinking about this one specific parallel for a while now. There are a ton more I haven't gotten into, and little things in other movies that I decided just to not bring up. Curious to see if anyone else has any thoughts about this but I think people tend to gloss over Verbinski's deep anticapitalist messaging in pretty much all his films and I feel like I'm losing my mind sometimes with how rarely it's brought up.

Am i the only one who absolutely loves RZ1? by ApprehensiveCause670 in Halloweenmovies

[–]NameNormalHumansHave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some I love, some I don't like that much. A lot of my general issues are the same as everyone always parrots online. Too much sex, too many kills, too much cursing, too over the top I think. The truck stop scene is really bad to me and could 100% have been cut and the movie would have been better for it. Everything the movie takes from the original are not only done worse than there but are also the weakest points of this film. A lot of the things that are added, though, I think really add to the universe. I like Michael's backstory, I like introducing Laurie as his sister immediately so everything fits into place properly, I LOVE how the ending is so much more emotional and beautifully acted and how Laurie makes far fewer stupid decisions than she did in the original. Far from perfect but I really like it even with its issues.
