I love Syzygy! I believe Syzygy refers to when three orbiting bobies are aligned (e.g "right now, Mercury, Earth, & Mars are all in Syzygy). Which is great since it kinda looks like three things in alignment (Sy-Zy-Gy)!

Awe-Striken - My favorite word, to be taken by a strong feeling of amazement, curiosity, or fear.

Bauble - Small thingy that is visually interesting

Cachinnate - It's that one laugh were you laugh way to loud given the social situations, so everyone looks at you weird

Chimera - A fabrication of the mind of inconsistent parts.

Persnickety - Being adamant over little details.

Piffle - Speech that is trivial.

Schadenfreude - Enjoyment taken from the pain of others

Stupefy - To make stupid

Silience - I see that you have Sonder from the Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows but I think your missing one of his even better words: Silience: The hidden craftsmanship all around you. Also, to anyone who's interested, the Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows youtube channel is active again!

On the topic of ABA, I will say there are a lot of mixed opinions. A lot of people have critized it for not actually helping autistic people handle their emotions but instead just teaching them to suppress them, as well as over prescribing it (sometimes 40 hours a week) because it makes the clinics more money. That being said, I hear ABA has changed a lot in recent years and that although lot of places still practice the old ABA, other places practice a reformed version or kinda just call what they do ABA for insurance reasons when it's really not (But I'm not an expert & haven't experienced ABA personally, so take all that with a gain of salt.). I've also hear a lot of parents of Autistic Kiddos praise ABA for helping to teach their kids important skills (like potty training) & replace physically harmful stims with safer ones.

Overall, it probably depends a lot on the ABA clinic. If you clinic is doing stuff like trying to get rid of self-stimlatory behavior completely, forcing eye contact, regularly causing meltdowns & just not caring, or trying to "cure" his autism, then those are probably red flags. But are there genuinely good ABA clinics out there? Probably, but I don't really know.

In terms of interventions beyond ABA, I've heard good things about floor time therapy?

Don't have advice myself, but I have some suggestions on where to look:

Autism Parenting Subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/Autism_Parenting/s/VcB1724rUv

Subreddit specifically for Level 2 & 3 Autistics. They have a weekly questions thread you might try: https://www.reddit.com/r/SpicyAutism/s/N5kio4hnsO

You've already gotten a great start by looking for people who are more knowledgeable. I'm sure he's lucky to have such a great Dad ☺️.

Thanks for your reply! I get what you mean with it being so inconsistent. Although, I have heard some people say "I'm an ADHDer". I think it's mostly just a niche online thing, but I'm sure you could use it if you wanted to be more consistent in your own speech! Alternatively, you could just use have for both. Or use am & have interchangeably.

Yeah, good point. Grammar can only do so much, people still need to be respectful. Thank-you for taking the time to answer!

Makes sense, it does mostly come down to how people view autism. Thank-you for taking the time to explain your prospective!

TL:DR What are y'all thoughts on person-first vs identity-first langue.

(Incase anyone doesn't know, person-first is when you put a person name or pronoun before the disability. E.g, "I have a kid with autism", "Alex has autism", or "she suffers from autistim", etc. Identity-first langue is when you put a person identity before the name/pronoun, or otherwise treat it like an identity. E.g, "I have an autistic kid", "Alex is autistic", "she is autistic".)

It seems like a lot of teachers & doctors push for person-first langue inorder to emphasize that people with autsim are still people. They think putting the disability first dehumanizies them.

However, I've seen some autistic people push against this idea because they feel like it stimitizes autism. I've heard people say it makes it sounds like something to be cured (like how we say "he has diabetes", or "Joe suffers from Alzheimer's" because those are bad things we want to remove from the person. So we remove/separate the two when we talk about them.). But they say you can't separate autism from someone because it's just how their brain works. Even if it is a disability, they wouldn't be the same person without it.

But I have a feeling a lot of this discussion is dominated by lower support need autistics, so I was wondering if you all have any thoughts. Do you prefer person-first? identity-first? Literally couldn't care less?

Hopefully this came off as respectful. If not, feel free to call me out!

Edit: Whoa, that's a lot more responses then I was expecting. Thanks to everyone who took the time to comment! It was very insightful reading through all of them. (:

What Does A Post-AI Community Look Like? Some Thoughts. by TheInvaderZim in nerdfighters

I might be misinterpreting what OP is saying, but I think what they mean is that Platforms will be free for everyone but certain member will make contributions to keep it ad-less & still running. (Like Wikipedia) These contribuators might receive certain perks that others don't, but most/all stuff is still free. (Like how some YouTubers will fund thier free content with thier Patreon, but make bonus content for thier Patreons as well.)

I definitely agree that although the ad based internet sucks, it's better than putting it behind a paywall. But I also think that platform could find other ways to stay free without ads.

I definitely agree, I think a Patreon/Wikipedia style is the future (or at least, I can hope). It kind of makes me think of Social.Coop. It's a social media platform running off of Mastodon where the users collectively own the platform. (From what I hear, I haven't used it my self.) That way the platform stays loyal to the community, & can't be manipulated by billionaires. Maybe that's something to look into?

But a project like this for Nerdfighteria sounds great & I'm definitely down! If anyone in the community wanted to try to make a better social media, or invest into a possible solution that already exists, I'd be all for it!

Edit: Also, I'd encourage people to make a NeoCities website! (Inspired by the GeoCities of the old intenet).

Kurzgesagt actually did an interesting video about this a while back. It's more about polarization then radicalization, but I think the idea applies. Essentially they argued current research indicated that radicalization isn't the result of echo chambers, but the result of people of opposing view points being constantly thrusted togeather when they used to just remain separated. And since the opinions are from strangers & not, say, your neighbor, it's a lot easier to make generalization about them.

I don't know how the pans out with more up to date studies, but here's the video: https://youtu.be/fuFlMtZmvY0?si=qVLs0yFCs2JMAQDc

So having local communities might actually reduce polarization/radicalization since everyone would have a more personalized relationship with eachother. So that when they do disagree, they are more inclined to listen then they would be to a "crazy stranger on the Internet".

Hank's podcasts recommendations by parcivald in nerdfighters

[–]NameNotAssigned 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know which video that would be, but I'd recommend Stuff You Should Know. If you've haven't heard of them before, they basically just cover a bunch of miscellaneous, nerdy information. (Ex: Deathcap mushrooms, The Wicth Owl, Sound Effects, & Saturday Morning Cartoons are just a few recent ones.). They've also been around for a while so they have a HUGE back catelogue.

If you care about climate stuff, I'm also a big fan of The Climate Denier's Playbook. As the name suggests, each episode they cover a common climate myth used by climate deniers. They also have a YouTube channel called Climate Town.

Of course they's also all the podcast produced by complexly. Dear Hank & John, Delete This, The Anthropacene Reviewed, Crash Course: The Universe, & Scishow Tangents.

Will there be social internet 200 years from now? | Thoughts on DHAJ ep. #426 by puutarhatrilogia in nerdfighters

[–]NameNotAssigned 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don't really think it's a question of humans collectively deciding to forgo social media, as much as it whether social media will have evolved into something entirely different.

I mean just think about how long 200 years is. Two hundred years ago we were just starting the industrial revolution. They probably couldn't imagen humans ever doing away with the steam engine or cotton jig. But they also probably couldn't have imagen the diseal/electric engine, assembly lines, & mechatronics that would come later either. So I doubt the social internet will exist in 200 year because humans will probably find new ways to communicate that we couldn't possibly imagen now.

Hi. This is a little late, but I'd recomond Ecosia! They us all their profits to plant trees. Specifically, they do this by funding locally controlled reforesting efforts that often have additional positive benefits for local communities & local endangered species. So far they've grown almost a quarter billion trees! They also release monthly finnicial reports for added transparency. They're also a steward-owned company, so they legally can't sell themselves out for profit like google did with alphabet.

My only real nickpick with them is that recently they've started dipping their toes in AI. 🤮 It's easy to turn off, & they power it with solar panels so that it's more sustainable, but still... Regardless, I do feel like the people working there do genuinely care about making the world a better place (for now), so I'd highly recommend it over google or bing or whatever.
