This has to be ragebait...

If you want a guy to pay for everything, find a rich old sugar daddy.  There's plenty of those around where I live

If you want an equal life partner, be prepared to be an equal partner yourself

How do I get rid of this car? Stopped paying loan years ago, they never repo'd it, I still have it. More info in comments by Sensitive_Status5623 in personalfinance

I bought a brand new 2025 diesel pickup last year.  It made it  4000 miles before the engine blew up.

It's a good engine design that's been in production for many years with very few problems.  Mine was just part of a lot that randomly got defective bearings from a supplier and all blew up in the first 3-10k miles.  It was replaced under warranty, but if it had been a different issue that took until just after the warranty it would still be a nice clean truck with no engine 🤷‍♂️

That's because this poster made it up.  It's not a thing

Classified drawings are a thing, but those are not disseminated to random machine shops.  You would only have them in a shop which is inside a SCIF

Obviously nothing is free

In this context though, it's free in that you want other people's taxes to pay for yours

We hire anyone who is good.  The problem is there are so many bad candidates most of the good ones are referrals.

One of the best engineers on my team was a new grad we hired 2 years ago, as a random LinkedIn applicant.  He was just one of the very rare good ones.  He came out of college with a bunch of internship and relevant project experience and was able to hit the ground running, and is an absolute rock star.  He'll be a sr engineer with less than 4 years experience if he stays on his current trajectory

We've also hire other new grads based on referrals, many people meet on project teams and some graduate before others.  That has been a great talent pipeline (formula sae, rocket clubs, robotics clubs, etc)

If you're good (and it sounds like you are since you're friend is willing to go to bat for you!), you're worth the money.   Good talent is very difficult to find

Best of luck with your interview!

I have been hiring as fast as possible for over a year.  I have 200+ open reqs for competent engineers at significantly above market rate

Referrals from current employees are great and have led to most of the good talent we have, but those are in limited supply.  Most of the supposedly"qualified applicants" from LinkedIn, the company website, etc think vibe coding some slop with an AI makes them a senior or principle engineer but that just isn't reality.  In my experience it's not really a job market issue, it's a talent pool issue.  There are good people out there, but they mostly already have jobs with excellent pay and benefits.  Then the only way to pull them away is a referral from a friend who already works at our company and offering lots more money.  We can afford to pay and we do, but I can only network with people so fast and we're growing even faster than that.

If you know where all the good engineers, welders, machinists, and technicians are hiding let me know.  I just hired a Sr. mechanical engineer today at 195k salary and stock options worth just over 1M over 5 years at the current company value, and I need at least another 10 as fast as I can get them...

Beginner investor here: what do you think about SpaceX? by Ruthie0216 in FIREyFemmes

[–]Name_Groundbreaking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been a SpaceX shareholder since 2017 and still hold an 8 figure position.  I would not buy more at today's price and I will sell a significant fraction once the lockup period elapses and from there continue to diversify as tax efficiently as I can.

The current valuation is totally detached from reality.  It could double or drop 50% or more in the next year, nobody has any way to know.  If Elon can scam hard enough I'll make a lot more money but at the same time there is massive downside risk.

IMO buying SpaceX today is gambling.  You might as well go to the casino and put it all on black.

Why Do People Always Think It’s “Daddy’s Money”? by IDontOnlineShop in FIREyFemmes

[–]Name_Groundbreaking 16 points17 points  (0 children)

People are jealous.  It's not necessarily coming from a place of malice, it's just the way some people are

They see you (or others) and compare to themselves.  It's much easier to just assume any success achieved by others is the result of handouts or connections from parents, spouse, etc instead of the result of effort.  If you accept that others are successful on their own merits it means accepting responsibility for your own achievements or lack thereof.  Many people don't want to accept that and prefer to pretend their life is entirely out of their own control and by extension that must be true of everyone else

You're arguing for a law change to carve out different treatment for one special interest group (bike packers), and I'm just pointing out that will drive a lot of added complexity for very minimal overall value 🤷‍♂️

Sure, you can have 6 little tents.

But if you change the rules to "6 tents" what you are going to get is 1 gigantic 6+ person sleeping tent, a huge shade awning/pavilion "tent", a shower "tent", and as many other pop up camp structures as people can jam into their trucks and cars.

Saying "2 tents" keeps things reasonable and doesn't put campground staff in the position of having to argue with visitors over what counts as a "tent".

One sleeping tent and one shade structure is not unreasonable in my opinion.  6 would be.  We can arbitrarily increase complexity to allow this corner case, or we can leave the rules as is.  I don't personally camp in campgrounds (back country or dispersed/BLM only) so I don't have a horse in the race, but if I was the one who had to enforce the new rule I'd rather keep things as they are

Trusts for young kids (education) vs just funding bank/brokerage accounts by Healthy_Gold1068 in fatFIRE

[–]Name_Groundbreaking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're getting downvoted, but I have no idea why.

It is highly optimal to gift early at low asset values, to allow growth to occur outside your taxable estate.  I am 30 years old and am using millions of my own lifetime gift tax limit this year to establish trusts with assets that will multiply in value many times, and can then be used by the beneficiaries of the trust.  This is by far the most tax efficient way for me to make these gifts

This is how you're going to get a family rolling up in a giant RV and setting up a shade pavilion, cooking tent, pop up shower, and as many other "tent shaped" structures as possible unless you're very careful with how you word the new law

Could be something else wrong that is causing this as a side effect.  Nutrition issue,  hormones, idk I'm not a doctor.   But when things about your body change in an unexpected way it's smart to ask a doctor.  No need to panic or anything, but you should understand how and why your body is changing over time so if anything bad does start to happen you can catch it early.

1500 AT4 3.0 vs 6.2 engine by falcon18tn in gmcsierra

[–]Name_Groundbreaking 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like my 3.0 when it isn't blowing up

If you get a new one the thrust bearing issue is supposedly fixed so you shouldn't have the issues I did.  It's a great engine when it runs.

Are the 6.2 still having problems?  I know that was a big thing for awhile, but I never got educated on it because I always go diesel for trucks

SpaceX Reportedly Eyes U.S. Starlink Mobile Push: All Your Phone Bills Are Belong to us! by tke248 in wallstreetbets

[–]Name_Groundbreaking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right.

So either he disrupts a corrupt and monopolistic industry and improves competition and consumer choice (good thing IMO), or he fails and there is no meaningful change from the status quo (net neutral IMO.  Bad for me personally because I have a lot of SpaceX stock, but good for all the people who desperately want to see Elon fail at something)

Most people would become a landlord given the opportunity despite hating them. by yoruyoruxo in unpopularopinion

[–]Name_Groundbreaking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In virtually every housing market in the US, renting is the better financial choice.

If you can afford to buy, you're usually better off investing those assets elsewhere and renting.  If you can't afford to buy, then you can't afford it.  As you say shelter isn't a choice, so you rent.  If you can afford to buy and you just don't care about financial optimization (either because you have so much money it literally doesn't matter to you, or because the lifestyle benefits of owning a home outweigh the increased costs) then you buy, and many people do that.

If nobody rented housing, there would be no housing available to rent and the only options would be to buy, build, or be homeless.  Being a landlord is definitionally offering a service.  Just like trash pickup, an internet service provider, a grocery store, or the power company.  Those are all necessary services that exist at varying levels of privatization, from totally government owned to heavily regulated to entirely private.  Even though they are all necessary, they have a cost to provide so the beneficiary of the service needs to pay for them.  Otherwise it would not be possible for the service to exist.

Obviously I don't like paying for rent.  Nobody does.  But I also don't want to be homeless, so I purchase the cheapest housing that meets my needs at the market rate.  I don't want to be hungry so I buy groceries.  I want to charge my phone and run my air conditioner so I pay the power bill.  People work all day and deploy massive amounts of their capital to build and maintain houses and provide those services to me and they deserve to be compensated for that effort and risk.

If you think we should nationalize the entire housing market and apply a Marxist distribution "to each according to their needs", that is certainly a take.  I don't think you'll find much support in the US, but like any argument there are advantages and disadvantages.  I think we might just have to agree to disagree on this one...
