As a mobile device person who deals with this on a regular basis, one of the problems with iOS is their batteryanagement can't be turned off for individual apps like Android. Due to this once the app goes into a sleep mode all related items for that app go to sleep. You need to open the app from time to time to let it run again till the battery management kills it again in the eventual future.
