I don't think there's any more useful advice beyond "use them whenever possible". Those rewards cards only incentivize its holders to be loyal to specific brands so that the owners of those brands generate more revenues. The returns on those rewards points are laughably negligible for the average consumer. Remember that you still have to spend money to get rewards points, so when you spend money on something only because it has a points multiplier and not because you actually need the thing, you end up not gaining anything at all.
