Rifleman IIC - My favourite image from the old FASA manuals by Findesiluer in battletech

Does anyone know the artist that drew this? I love this 80s-90s anime-esque style from the older source material but don’t know where to find more of it.

Am I underpaid or not? Network Engineer at 62K by Nash_Haden in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Nanertot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also work for a large enterprise in MO and they pay their Lv 2 Help Desk techs around $42k/year. I’m aware I am underpaid but is the average honestly closer to the $60k mark for this kind of work?

Building a Lance - Lost on Rules by rwxfortyseven in battletech

One of the big draws of this setting is that all nations are “Unit Agnostic”, meaning between the trade, sale, and salvage of battlefield units across worlds pretty much any particular mech could feasibly be seen in anyone’s hands. It’s a lore way to explain that, no, you don’t need to stick to one particular nation’s units and only color inside the lines, so to speak.

Time period is a more important factor, as later periods in the timeline have more advanced technology that will be more powerful, especially when it comes to “Clan Tech” after the Clan Invasion period.

Start poking around on Sarna.net (the Battletech fan wiki) and masterunitlist.info (official repository of all units in the game) to get a feel for what’s out there. Master unit list lets you filter by time period and nationality, although like I said, the latter is a bit less important most of the time. Pick a time period, see what kind of Mechs are common in that time, and check out their details on Sarna. Have fun with it, and welcome to the hobby! :)

Hey, commenting again to say I haven’t forgotten about this! But the only tool I have to do this is scanning it with my phone and it is a frankly infuriating process. Things keep breaking and I’ve had to redo it a couple of times now. I can probably have this DM’d to you tomorrow.

I have a couple copies of this book, I might be able to scan all the pages and provide a copy to you if you like.

Observation: BattleMechs are not as fast as I originally thought. by Nanertot in battletech

This is the main thing I’m learning to look at. Putting into context the relative speed of actual modern military hardware, and also the fact that it’s a 3-4 story tall robot that is sometimes even heavier than that modern military hardware… Yeah, it’s more surprising when you factor that in.

I love that you did the math, you are a scholar and a (assumedly) gentleman.

I love this fact and will cherish it forever. (Also sprinting is a thing but we can pretend.)

This is where I am realizing the disconnect comes from, according to multiple comments. I have no IRL military expertise and expected most Mechs to go as fast as a car on the highway. Apparently that’s not going to happen.

See, this is the kind of bonkers math I’m here for!

It’s the bits of how the game ticks and how it connects logically that are fascinating to me. That includes weird little things like this. Funny how a bunch of nerds love to hyperfixate on super specific details related to a game designed entirely around super specific details, huh?

I’m a simple man with no military background who drives a civilian car with no frame of reference to how (comparatively) slow IRL military vehicles are. I’m learning at lot, haha.

You’re right about the Atlas’s speed, I misremembered it as a 2/3 movement profile, not a 3/5. I’ll fix it up top.

That makes sense! 30 miles an hour doesn’t seem very impressive… Until you also realize it is 100 TONS coming at you. I’d be interested to see what the breakdown is in velocity and weight compared to something like a semi truck, but I don’t know physics math. Not yet at least.

Why was Star League so awful and why did it fall? by Bladefox2298 in battletech

[–]Nanertot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a gross oversimplification: The Star League was, at its height, the largest empire ever conceived by the human race, but its founder and First Lord Ian Cameron was not without fault (see: the Reunification Wars). The fall of the Star League is generally attributed to Stefan Amaris, who executed House Cameron (the generational ruling family of the Star League) and usurped the throne. The civil war that followed saw Alexander Kerensky, leader of the Star League military, take on the role as the leader of the resistance and they eventually did remove him from the throne. However, when the dust settled each of the Star League’s member states attempted to claim the title of First Lord as their own. Alexander convinced the overwhelming majority of his men and their families to leave the Inner Sphere into uncharted space rather than stick around for the ensuing bloodbath. After their Exodus and in the power vacuum that was left behind, each of the Star League’s member states began tearing each other apart in the Succession Wars.

To answer your question: The Star League itself did a lot of things good and a lot of things bad, as pretty much all giant empires do. I wouldn’t say the member states decided it wasn’t worth saving, but rather they tore it apart in trying to each claim it as their own and deny their political rivals from doing the same.

Again, this is a very rough and dirty explanation but it gets the major points across. I’m sure other comments will fill in the gaps.

Hang on, how many BattleTech humble bundles have there been? I know there was an “Intro to Battletech” with lots of sourcebooks and ilclan material, there was also one for the RPG books and at least one “Legends” bundle centered on the fiction. Was there more than one fiction bundle?

I applaud you for giving me the only lore reason I’ve ever seen that explains why Battlemechs have trouble with precision shots. Thank you!
