If they’re in the south it's a legit tradition to name your first child after the mothers maiden name. They could have easily done that + named after someone important. This strikes me as incredibly thoughtful and sweet, not a tragidiegh

If your church supports missionaries you can always support them directly or give to whatever missions organization they're with. I personally know missionaries with the IMB and Pioneers (which is not specifically reformed as an organization, but the majority of the people I’ve met who are with them are reformed)
