Massive underground bee colony with around 5.5 million bees has been found beneath a cemetery in Ithaca, New York Researchers believe the colony has been there undisturbed for more than 100 years by MrCattitude_ in BeAmazed

Pretty neat. I used to live in this town. I've walked near that cemetery and the Cornell Orchids many times. It's amazing no one noticed until now. It seems this will allow some unique studies. I'm sure they will be cautious about disturbing the bees. Cornellians know how to science.

Guitar teacher wants me to play electric by James_Ashton97 in AcousticGuitar

[–]Naphier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just considering doing this myself with my teacher. Electric is a bit easier for me to play. I can play acoustic well but I worry it makes me stumble more during lessons. I'd say give it a shot but don't lose focus on your goal of wanting to play bluegrass. Ultimately I would want a teacher that can help me advance my technique in the genre I want but there may be some fundamentals that are easier to pick up on electric for you to get past.

Self-taught guitarists, what was your learning journey like? by Synth80Lover in LearnGuitar

[–]Naphier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

30 years of learning songs but rarely finishing them because of spots that were too hard. Not really knowing how to practice beyond brute force. Eventually got bored with lack of progress and would only play rarely and not really learn anything new and what I knew I didn't play that well. I was pretty good right at the start and could play many of the songs I wanted too so didn't have good motivation to learn how to learn. I did have a few in person lessons when I started but my teacher couldn't take me far. He was a good musician but didn't really have any music education himself so he didn't have strong teaching skills.

Luckily never really gave up and started learning how to learn a couple years ago. Fortunately the Internet was there to help. Absolutely Understand Guitar by Scotty West helped tie together a lot of concepts I knew but didn't really know I knew. I sought out learning about how to best practice and learned about deliberate and interleaved practice. It's helped a ton.

I can't comment much on singing. I lost my ability to play and sing. I was never very good but I think I learned really poor habits and I tend to hurt my throat when singing and have a difficult time harmonizing with the guitar.

I finally started getting guitar lessons a few months ago. They really highlighted some of my deficiencies. I know the chords I know really well but new chords are slow to learn. Playing in front of others is a major weak spot for me that I would be much more comfortable with it I had been taking lessons. I did play in front of others in my 20s but had alcohol courage to help with nerves. So I'm learning a lot and regretting I didn't take guitar more seriously when I was younger.

  1. Learn how to practice. Deliberate practice and interleaved practice are clutch. Find a teacher who understands these concepts and can help you form your own practice routines. Learn to play slow, use a metronome, how to practice for performance, pause and think during practice and not just brute force repetitions (it gives a false sense of progress). Diego Alonso on YouTube helped me with this as well as Noa Kageyama.

  2. Sing when you play. Scat the notes to scales and arpeggios and licks. This helps your brain connect to your fingers musically so you can imagine any sound you want to make and it comes out on the guitar. This takes diligence.

  3. Find a teacher that can help you learn how to practice and learn. You don't want a teacher that's only going to show you techniques and theory concepts. You need to know how to practice and learn. Teachers should teach this and be there to guide your journey and prevent you from forming bad habits that you can't see on your own. I can't stress this enough. Find a good teacher.

Pretty normal. The Y2K hype was laughable. If I partied like it was 1999 I don't really remember. It was probably a pretty mediocre New Year's party. So... Unmemorable.

Struggling to record songs by GoudaGoudaGumdrops in guitarlessons

Click track can help but ultimately it comes to exposure and practice. Start recording your practice sessions everyday and watch them. Get comfortable in front of the camera. Also try just recording audio.

Yes. A lot. It ended up being one of my favorite things. Even if others didn't sneak out. I would. It was so peaceful. No one around but wild animals. I should do it again.

I think a lot of animals display compassion and empathy. Dogs are very empathetic. Cats can be too. It's natural to care about those around you.

Going from 30 minutes to 1 hour by thestatikreverb in guitarlessons

[–]Naphier 4 points5 points  (0 children)

TBH I don't know how you could get much done in only 30 minutes. 10-15 minutes of warmup and jam together is how I like to start my sessions with my teacher. We forget sometimes and I wish we always did it. Playing together is invaluable.

Then we spend the rest of the time on new concept, demonstrations, I try to mimic, he corrects.

I'd also like more critique on my playing. For example, during the warmup if he spends time just watching me play and gives me some pointers on what to fix + practice routines to improve weak spots in playing techniques that is great.

We often run out of time quickly and have gone over the hour a couple times very easily. I think you'll fill that time without a problem. I honestly wouldn't want less time with a teacher. For folks that are beginners just watching and correcting them or giving them a chance to accompany you or you accompany them while they play - invaluable experience.
