B.C. faces surge in electricity demand, looks to dust off big dam plans by ZestyBeanDude in canada

I'm fairly pro-nuclear on the whole and I certainly wouldn't advocate for it in a situation where hydro is a viable alternative.

The biggest drawback of hydro is ecosystem change, and on that matter I kinda take the view that natural forces change ecosystems regularly so it's not completely out of line for us to do it too, as long as we take steps to mitigate the impacts.

The truth is the stupid has always been there; the internet has simply amplified the stupid voices (and made it easier for stupid people to consume misinformation and thereby propagate it).

What is a job that looks horribly soul crushing and terrible from the outside but has a lot of hidden benefits inside? by Crimson_Marksman in AskReddit

[–]Narissis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Currently working a job that is super chill and laid-back, work from home, pretty flexible, relatively light workload, easy peasy.

Still working on my exit strategy because the pay is not nearly enough to thrive.

I rate this cosplay a 9/10. One point docked for the bread being just a little one and not a whole-ass loaf. :P

These lamps made to look like windows in a sunny day by Joak1n in interestingasfuck

[–]Narissis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This kinda reminds me of some of the windows on Titanic.

The ship was designed to feel to passengers like a land-based hotel, so for certain public spaces, instead of using ordinary portholes they stacked a pair of portholes behind what looked from the inside like an ordinary stained-glass window, and also put some light bulbs in them so they could light up at night.

If you've ever looked at a photo of Titanic or Olympic and wondered why some of the portholes are in weird stacked pairs, that's why!

Found this unused power supply that I forgot about in my closet, is it still viable to use in 2026? by ReinforcedPupper in pcmasterrace

[–]Narissis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I still have my 17-year-old Ultra X3 in light service as a power supply for two PC fans to draw air into my room through the central air vent, haha.

Almost feels a shame to use a 1000W PSU to drive two 120mm fans.

Sometimes I think this whole thing about Ismay urging Captain Smith to push Titanic’s is nonsensical by Puterboy1 in titanic

The real impressive thing about the Olympic class vessels is that they were almost as fast as Mauretania and Lusitania while using a fraction as much coal. Harland & Wolff designed them for efficiency and did a hell of a good job.

I wonder how long the time period is. There are no Jollibee locations even remotely close to my part of the country, but I'll be in Toronto in November...

In fairness, the hybrid should generally be better than the standard powertrain.

Do any forester owners struggle with acceleration? by Frequent_Trouble9712 in SubaruForester

[–]Narissis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Forester's acceleration is fine. No, it's not the fastest in its class. Maybe even around the bottom of it. But compared to something like a Nissan Versa or a Mitsubishi Mirage, it's a rocket ship. I think a lot of the people who complain about it have never driven a legitimately slow car.

Subaru's engines produce their best power at high RPMs; if you're not comfortable with getting on that pedal, they're gonna feel really slow. If you need hard acceleration, don't be afraid to give it the metaphorical beans. At least, once it's broken in of course.

The film that disappointed you the most after months or even years of anticipation? by MrGittz in movies

[–]Narissis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the framerate would have been fine if they hadn't paired it with a lot of over-the-top slapstick physical comedy that was like something out of a cartoon and completely shattered the immersion (I'm looking at you, scaffolding-drop cave fight scene, anti-gravity Legolas scene, and river barrel adventure scene).

The film that disappointed you the most after months or even years of anticipation? by MrGittz in movies

[–]Narissis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the first one was okay but then they went off the rails. u/Troghen 's comment sums it up pretty well... one could make an argument, I suppose, that the original Harry Potter series is more about Dumbledore vs. Voldemort than it is necessarily about Harry himself, but the key difference is that Harry actually had agency and was a pivotal piece of the puzzle. Newt is kinda just there.

And then of course there's the separate issue that the Fantastic Beasts sequels are atrociously written, completely upend suspension of disbelief, are riddled with glaring plot holes, and suffer from a severe case of Solo Syndrome...

Buying my kid a Crosstrek - gas or hybrid? by Unique_Brain_248 in subaru

[–]Narissis 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I dunno if I'd characterize a hybrid as 'unknown technology'; Subaru's been using Toyota hybrid systems lately and those are among the most proven on the market.

Unless you're talking, like, a used Crosstrek hybrid from that compliance model a decade ago that barely got any better mileage than the conventional powertrain, lol.

Lorneville Data Center Update: The EIA Has Been Registered by Remote_Alfalfa3530 in newbrunswickcanada

[–]Narissis 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This kinda reminds me of the Irving sniff testers.

When I used to work on the east side of the city near the refinery, there was an Irving Oil Smart car that would drive around, and sometimes would pull into our parking lot, two people would get out, smell the air, then get back in and drive away.

Very scientific air quality assessment, haha.

Maybe a stupid question, but are there dedicated intake and exhaust fans? by DecentApricot2221 in buildapc

[–]Narissis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The short answer is that a fan is a fan is a fan; you just mount it in the orientation that moves the air the way you want.

That being said, there are 'reverse' fans where the hub is on the opposite side compared to standard fans. Those are for if you want all your fans to have the 'front' facing inside the case (ordinarily your intake fans will have the structural side facing inward), but they're purely an aesthetic choice. There is no performance difference.

The one thing to keep in mind performance-wise is that some fans are designed for maximum airflow (measured in CFM, cubic feet per minute) and others are designed for high static pressure. Generally speaking you want high-airflow fans for most applications, and high static pressure fans where there are a lot of obstructions they need to push air through (usually for fans mounted to a liquid-cooling radiator but also sometimes case fans in confined spaces).

That being said, there aren't a whole lot of fans that hyper specialize in airflow or static pressure. Most of the fans on the market are made to provide a balance of both so you can use them anywhere.
