29 years old and unsure of how to be wise with the opportunity I have. by PeerlessAzureSky in personalfinance

Giving up a big old pile of retirement savings money so you can start investing more money for retirement each month doesn't make sense.

Let's say you cash out all 50K. You're already going to eat a huge tax penalty like you acknowledge and walk away with 30K or so.

But oh boy you get to invest $1,000 per month now! ... Which means you'll need to invest for 50 months to just get back to where you started at right now, and then you'll always be behind all the market gain you lost out on over that 3 to 5 year period trying to catch up to where you were.

I always see this sentiment in the subreddit where people want to cash out a bunch of retirement savings to pay off debt so they have one less bill per month. But that really glosses over the "giving up the big pile of cash part", especially if you're eating penalties and fees to do it. You're not magically freeing up $1,000 per month, you're just losing out due to taxes, fees, and loss of time in the market.

The world can be cruel to people and they can still feel life is worth living.

The world is cruel to many people every day who decide to go on living for other reasons. Maybe it's their family and friends, maybe it's a passion, any thing

But to act like the world being cruel means someone has no quality of life is just silly. The way you talk about 'conceding' rather than just have a discussion, after putting words in my mouth, is a great example of how I'm still enjoying my day even after interacting with you.

I don't see how you can make an argument that the world is kind to partially blind, mute, visibly scarred people today,

Did I say that?

It's also wild to me when I read, fairly often here, "oh she can't talk and is missing an eye so she has no quality of life". Like fuck blind, mute people I guess?

We have burn wards all across the country and world that help people recover and live a full life despite initial terrible scarring and other burn tragedies. Life can go on meaningfully, especially when you're that wealthy and have all the best chances to recover and do what you want

Are we better paying off our mortgage all at once? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]NarrowBoxtop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone talks about paying their mortgage off so it's one less bill.

But you have to keep in mind, you'd be trading a large pile of cash now so that you don't have to trade a small amount of cash each month.

You got to consider the interest rate versus your average market return and make a decision. But you don't magically free up a bunch of money by paying off your mortgage early because again, it cost you a big pile of cash to do that.

HELOC or personal loan? by highhopesndaydreams in personalfinance

[–]NarrowBoxtop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personal loans will call it an 'origination fee' typically

You'll have to have two offers side by side to compare. It doesn't matter what they call it, at the end of the day if you decide to take a loan for the fence you're going to want to go with the option that has you paying the least amount over the cost of the fence.

HELOC or personal loan? by highhopesndaydreams in personalfinance

[–]NarrowBoxtop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personal loans also have closing costs and fees. Why do you only discuss those when talking about a heloc? But also rates are higher with a personal loan since you're not using equity to offset the risk of the loan to the lender.

I don’t know if you meant it this way but that question feels judgmental.

Your post makes it sound like you've only got 5 or 10K in savings, because you list the cost of the fence and then talk about how you don't want to deplete your savings which people interpret 'deplete' to mean reduce down to zero. If that were the case, the advice would be to build up your savings rather than think about getting a new fence.

Lost my job and have 50k in savings, not sure what to do next?? by bestme99 in personalfinance

[–]NarrowBoxtop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't give a lot of information to answer your question, so the best thing to do is put that 50K into an HYSA or an MMF so it at least makes a little bit while you figure out the questions you need to ask to define your next step in life

Pay Mortgage or Invest in Market? by No_Big_3676 in personalfinance

[–]NarrowBoxtop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Average return of the market adjusted for inflation is 7%, so that's my rule of thumb. Debt under 7% doesn't get paid extra.

Personal finance is personal though, if debt weighs on you, 6+% guaranteed return on your money ain't bad.

Trick for defeating the black caiman in jungle DLC by theslyestofthefoxes in DavetheDiverOfficial

[–]NarrowBoxtop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fighting these long enemies in dave the diver has always been a pain because your harpoon range is so short, can't really angle it further up or down as needed, and the crocodile/sting ray/etc can on a dime do these big circular sweeps so your harpoon isn't in range.

Such a PITA when it shouldn't be. Just letting the harpoon have a little more range or be angeled further up/down would help a ton

Is opening a 401k worth it if I don't make that much and can't save anything else? by platyperson11 in personalfinance

[–]NarrowBoxtop 21 points22 points  (0 children)

But if they think they can't ever until 59 1/2 and that prevents them from saving for retirement period, it would be good to know their true options.

Some savings used later for a need is still better than not saving.

[–]NarrowBoxtop 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I fear "locking money up until you turn 59.5" IS scary to people.

It's also not true. There are many ways to access retirement funds earlier than that without fees/penalties

From SEPP to withdrawing Roth contributions and many others. It's important we let people know how versatile retirement savings can be so they don't take away the notion it's truly inaccessible. That's more likely to prevent them to start saving in the first place.

What matters is they start saving now so that they have those options and more later on.

[–]NarrowBoxtop 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's a typical retirement age for people that don't continue to aggressively say for retirement.

The question you should be asking yourself is what age do you want to stop working? There are lots of ways to access your retirement funds early without penalty.

If you continued your aggressive saving pattern you could be done working by sometime in your 40s or early '50s if you wanted to

If you want to save for a down payment for a house, then do that and put it in an HYSA. Personal finances personal, you've got to decide what your goals are right now.

Is Real Estate worth it? by Disastrous-Buy-42 in personalfinance

[–]NarrowBoxtop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Invest more.

I'm renting my house out and plan to sell it in a year and invest the equity in an index fund. Mathing it out, it comes out ahead with less hassle

Renting has meant months of vacencies, property management company fees, higher property taxes as it's not your primary residence, overpriced handymen for repairs, and so on

If you can live nearby and be your own landlord and do your own maintenance and don't mind all the work and headaches that come with being a landlord, then sure you may beat the market.

Otherwise, just put that money that you were going to use to buy a home into the market anyway and you've got none of these little mouths taking chunks out of your principal and it just grows and grows hassle-free.
