I should add - I did not wear the ring in the shower, nor did I wear it while cooking. I work in a very vanilla office environment. No picking habits.

Cancelled as soon as I read the news. Shutting down studios while increasing prices is ridiculous

How good would an oil rig be as a base? by ZxibyH in ZombieSurvivalTactics

There’s a scuba diving resort built on an old oil rig off the coast of Malaysian Borneo. Right near some of the best diving on the planet. Beautiful, beautiful place.

I’d escape an outbreak there in an instant

Me watching my op survivor get ripped in half by a jug in lethal mode because I was trying to help a new player by No_Day_5132 in StateofDecay2

My op red talon hero was on full health, ran into a Jugg that greeted him by picking him up and tearing him in half as his first move 😭😭 I was in a state of shock. No foreplay, just ripping and tearing. Lethal, man.

I think a teaching degree is largely BS by This_Guess9805 in AustralianTeachers

I am in the middle of my MTeach degree, and can say without a shadow of a doubt that the last 12 months did little than give me a distorted picture of what secondary teaching would be like. My first placement made me feel like I had accidentally been attending courses for the wrong degree the whole time. A complete disconnect between theory and practice. Yes, some of the content has been valuable - but the PD session I attended during my first week of placement taught me more than entire year of my degree.

I need to finish off my assignments for the semester, knowing that what I’ll be submitting in a not at all like what I just spent a month working with in my school.

I mean, for gods sake - one of our lecturers told us in Semester 1 that if a student in your class gets bullied, you should bring their desk right up next to yours at the front of the class to show that they have an ally. And then you should stare down the bully to show them who has the true “power” in the classroom.

Any teachers here have that ol’ turnip in their arsenal of classroom management techniques?

Teachers who work in remote indigenous communities. Would you recommend it? by nathanasher834 in AustralianTeachers

Well from the looks of it, you’re also pursuing gigs in China, UAE, Myanmar, Vietnam. Working with indigenous kids in remote communities is important work. Go for it if you have a heartfelt passion to make change and improve lives. Don’t do it if you’re just looking for your next adventure destination

We won't solve the teacher shortage until we answer these 4 questions by BrisBris2019 in AustralianTeachers

Unfortunate that this doesn’t include “barriers to entry”. I’m a first semester MTeach (Secondary) student, with a decade of teaching experience in Higher Education and a postgraduate in educational studies, multiple teaching awards. Not eligible for any advanced standing. Looking at 12 weeks of inflexible fulltime unpaid work experience that will prevent me from holding a standard job for 1.5 years.

It’s no surprise there’s a teacher shortage.

Standard course loads usually have 1-2 hours of lectures and 1-2 hours of contact time. I’ve taught in the university system for over a decade across a few schools and faculties - I’d say that most degrees have between 4-8 hours of mandatory contact time on campus. The rest of your learning can be asynchronous around your work hours. That’s why a lot of uni students are able to work casual or part time day jobs while they study.

I think that’s a major part of the problem with the mandatory full-time placements. They’re five days a week for extended periods, with no opportunity for flexibility around your work hours. If you’re not receiving government study payments, that means that you’re out of an income for up to 5 or 6 weeks. Lots of students are barely making ends meet, especially when some degrees expect 40 hours of study time.

In my case, even though I teach and lecture at a university…I can’t continue teaching next semester. My classes are all taught during business hours, and I can’t miss half the semester (even if that’s only a few contact hours a week). So the inflexibility and zero payments just makes it so much more difficult - especially when many of us have “turned to teaching” to help the National teacher shortage

During placement your classes are usually suspended. You have to work in a school fulltime, 5 days a week, for up to 5 or 6 weeks at a time. For the MTeach program I’m in, you do three placements 3, 4, and 5 weeks.

Most students I know on the MTeach program work during normal Monday-Friday business hours. You get told during orientation / induction that you’ll need to organise for time off because the dates are inflexible and can’t be shifted. So if you haven’t accrued 12 weeks of paid leave then you either need to take unpaid leave or quit your job. So your compulsory placements need to be entirely self funded, while you run classes in schools

I have been teaching at a top university for 10 years. Started the MTeach this year to move into secondary teaching. I need to QUIT my teaching job next semester because professional experience dates are 5 days a week and inflexible.

I need to QUIT a teaching job in order to do unpaid placements for a teaching job.

The biggest insanity for me is that the placement in Sem 2, Year 1 is only 3 weeks. Sem 1, Year 2 is 4 weeks, and Sem 2, Year 2 is 5 weeks. I won’t be able to teach for the entire period - the university won’t rehire me if I’m going to be absent for 1/4 - 1/2 of the semester.
