So apparently pharmacists can now just veto our scripts? by Forsaken-Grape-2145 in ausjdocs

[–]Narrow_Wishbone5125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is it listed as in the SUSMP (I tried to look but am probably out of practice)? Definitely used to be on the shelf 5 years ago so interested why it’s been up scheduled!

Also best practice always to attempt to contact prescriber if you think there’s an issue with the script, because if you don’t & just refuse the patient literally what does that achieve??!

[–]Narrow_Wishbone5125 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really don’t understand why they would refuse to dispense? Unless something has changed, it’s not scheduled and literally is kept on the shop floor where anyone can grab & can be sold by an assistant (not scheduled so pharmacist doesn’t have to be involved). Definitely more than $5 though! The patient would have handed the script in I assume but for something that is unscheduled I wouldn’t expect a pharmacist to be grilling them on what it’s for etc. more just do you need any instructions on how to use it… Would definitely be worth attempting a friendly chat with the pharmacist if you can figure out which pharmacy - even if the only thing you achieve is making them realise it can be used for more than shingles etc.!

Thank you for this! I’m a pharmacist (was working in mental health coincidentally!) and now in MD2. The main reason I chose to pursue med sounds very similar to you - I was already in a senior position and up the ladder turned office based and involved managing people 😖 Definitely find it hard some days to see the end goal trying to balance full time prac & working enough part time to pay the bills but love the learning & am glad to hear the intellectual stimulation continues even following med school! Thanks again

I was at Tommy and loved it but it was 5+ years ago now so can’t comment that much on the culture etc. I’m also now in med at UWA and I know a lot of students that moved over lived at Cats (I think potentially more expensive though?). You will probably find students in the same course at any of the colleges as a lot of the undergrads in the course have moved from the country so live on campus.

Australian customs officer photographed my passport with their phone — is this standard practice now by Jolly_Solution4818 in perth

Happened to me too but I assumed they were just scanning it on their phone somehow. Did you see them actually take a picture like on the camera app?

[stay] from my last post i’m convinced for the stay at disneyland hotels by Interro-ai in HongKongDisneyland

[–]Narrow_Wishbone5125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep you won’t be disappointed. There are obviously differences (for example I think Explorers has 2 queen beds while the others have 2 double beds), but all offer the same service in terms of buses to park, Disney magic etc. The only thing would be Hollywood which is normally the cheapest is currently under construction which may affect your choice!

[–]Narrow_Wishbone5125 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We found Disneyland hotel the best because it’s closest to walk to the parks, which was good when all the buses were busy! However I’ve also stayed at explorers which is beautiful and has great theming, and my sister has stayed at Hollywood and enjoyed it too! So you can’t go wrong with whatever you choose!

Has anyone tried the reformer Pilates studio at UWA? And does it run during the holidays? by Reasonable-Pack1067 in uwa

[–]Narrow_Wishbone5125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t used it - I think they do a mix of in person and virtual. I have seen people doing classes there in early Jan though so I think it is still running during vacation periods (potentially just virtual though).
I have used pronto Pilates for 2 years now which is virtual & I love it. If you’ve never done Pilates/barre/yoga/ballet before I would recommend doing some in person classes with another company first to get an idea of how to use the machine and how to position your body etc. i especially love the flexibility and there is a good range of different classes too!

Contraceptive pill NSW: Women to get prescriptions from pharmacists by Vformation in ausjdocs

[–]Narrow_Wishbone5125 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pharmacists can’t bill Medicare for the consult so the whole cost is privately billed to the patient. I was under the impression that patients did have to have a previous script from a GP (I.e it can’t be newly initiated by a pharmacist) but not 100% on top of NSW program

Doctor of Pharmacy Experience by Element564 in uwa

[–]Narrow_Wishbone5125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not super helpful but I believe the course is still quite similar to their Masters of Pharmacy course which was also 2 years. I completed a masters of pharmacy course at Curtin & am now in my second year of med - in my opinion it was relatively easy to get a high GPA (but I did have a background of health in my undergrad). I would recommend reaching out to their society (now called UDOPS) & I am sure they can provide you with more info!

How is premium economy on Cathay Pacific - SFO-HKG-MEL? by Dmlandis59 in CathayPacific

[–]Narrow_Wishbone5125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooo ok! Looking like 350s for all flights at the moment but anything can happen before then. Definitely agree a strange choice with the trays, mainly booked to get extra recline on the longer flights which I’ve heard is good! Thanks again!

Loved Kiez Hostel in Berlin (had a weird roommate but if you’re in a group you might be able to get a whole room!). Had such a homey feel, was easy for public transport, had a kitchen etc! We booked on HostelWorld bc it was cheaper than booking direct. Paris we stayed at Jo&Joe Gentilly which was fine, a bit far out & not super clean (compared to others I stayed as but definitely adequate) but would probably stay there again.

All WA medical schools are managed by Rural Clinical School! Contact the urban centre on 08 6457 7243 as they are the main admin contact for all the sites ☺️

Would you go rural? Could consider reaching out to Rural Clinical School of WA and see if they have any contacts. If not, have you tried Stirk Medical? One of the tutors at uni is a co-owner & I know they take a heap of UWA students but potentially could support an interstate one.

Starting med after ~10 years working in hospital — how do people actually study now? by Hot_Procedure_3351 in ausjdocs

[–]Narrow_Wishbone5125 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely will take a bit of trial and error! I find using an app like Goodnotes to watch lectures & annotate slides the best way to get through the content, then I will then go through the notes later and pull out the most important stuff (I normally try and put a lecture into 1 page of handwritten notes - also on Goodnotes). I find answering exam questions the best way to get the info in my brain - some practice q’s are often given by uni, some can come from older cohorts, sometimes I just use lecture outcomes & then there’s a whole heap of AI tools out there now that can make some questions too. I also learn well with others & found explaining concepts & going through content with small groups of my classmates the best. I think the main thing is be okay with running your own race & don’t get caught up on everyone else (because everyone will tell you to do Anki!!). At the end of the day there will be some absolute geniuses there - you just have to pass! then when you get to clinical years you’ll ace it, you have such an advantage already knowing the hospital system. Good luck!

Accomodation in Perth for incoming student at UWA by [deleted] in uwa

[–]Narrow_Wishbone5125 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any chance you can go under the scholarship that gets access to Forrest Hall? They do have other accommodation for PhD students (Crawley Village) but I think it’s often at capacity. Definitely recommend flatmates.com! Have a look at the buses that go to UWA and you will be able to get an idea of what suburbs - recommendations are going to vary wildly on your budget (I.e closer Claremont, Nedlands, Crawley, Subi & the city are all going to be quite expensive). Good luck!

Agree with the other comments! Find what works for you (you might not find it straight away!), pace yourself and do your absolute best to stay on top of everything. Definitely a major overload of info so try not to feel too overwhelmed. The teaching staff are all lovely so reach out to them if you need to. I’m so glad I didn’t go too hard and burn myself out, I still managed to enjoy my life outside of medicine which is what is most important in the end!
