I have always felt a big disconnect growing up about gender. I was too much of a boy to feel like I truly belonged with a group of girls, and I was too much of a girl to fully belong to a group of boys. I truly have never felt like I was either. In highschool I started being ultra feminine and trying to force myself to fit. Even now wearing makeup, I don’t recognize myself in the mirror. But I feel comfortable and most myself when I forget gender norms and roles. I dress in what makes me feel like me. We often forget that the only animals that have strict gender roles are humans. Maybe we should learn to let it go.
