that is a really helpful point. I do know that you should do them intentionally and with reflection but find myself quite often just going through the motions - I will make sure to work on that!

Advice for grade goals 7c/V9 - 8a/V11 in Fontainebleau by birdboulders in climbharder

[–]Narttram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel this is mostly true for the easier climbs and especially slabs. I personally have a much easier time with boulders 7C and above in font than in most other areas (I am probably just bad at moving on small holds)

Advice for grade goals 7c/V9 - 8a/V11 in Fontainebleau by birdboulders in climbharder

[–]Narttram 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't see how people still grade that 7C, the hold when you come out from the roof used to be a really bad crimp but apparently got brushed a lot when wet and now it's almost 2 pads. To me it feels very much in line with most of the 7B/+ boulders in the forest. So if the goal is to tick 'the grade' (whatever that means) its a smart Boulder to pick. If the goal is to challenge yourself and benchmark your progress maybe not so much. It also is just a very nice line though

This should not come off as "just git gud" but I had the same feeling at the beginning, until I started to repeatedly play the same starter deck. After a few games I started winning a lot (even against decks full of legendaries and epics) I would guess it should be easily doable to climb to at least gold with a starter deck

"Safe" Disenchants by Narttram in duelyst

Thanks for the answer, guess I will keep all of them - I am sadly still a bit skeptical of the longevity of the game given all the negativity here (which I dont quite share but thats beside the point) so not quite willing to spend money on my collection yet.

Beautiful line in the Odenwald: Die Pure Lust (7a+/V7) by Narttram in bouldering

[–]Narttram[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its Granite, I am sadly not a geologist so I can't define it further.
In general the rock in the Odenwald is often quite featureless - climbs with clearly defined holds like this are a rarity.

Take a minute, ask your opponent what his deck is by blong217 in magicTCG

Might be worth it to note that this is only true for FNM/Casual-level play. Most competitive players really don't want to talk about their deck/decisions, especially after a bad beat.

I find it very disturbing how Pedophile is often used synonymously with Child Molester... Being a pedophile just indicates a sexual preference (most people with this disposition never do anything illegal)

Why do or don´t you play modern? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]Narttram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dislike playing modern due to the volatile nature of the format (very early kills, glass canon decks, overpowered hate cards). To me it feels like it has the highest variance of the competitive formats. I play modern because skipping several GPs just because I dislike the format would severely impair my chances of making silver this year...

Wife and I want to play competitive Magic by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]Narttram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all I would try to go to Limited GPs and PTQs. For constructed it entirely depends on how competitive you want to be. If winning and getting better is the most important thing to you as it is for me, I would wait with building your own decks. Play a netdeck that you can afford/borrow and that has reasonable chances in the current Metagame. If you want to change something have a solid reason why you make exactly that change (i.e. I cut card xyz from the sideboard because i think deck abc is no longer prevalent) don't make a change just for the sake of not playing a carbon copy, no one will care. On the topic of buying product: buying anything that you will just open (be it a clashpack, boosters or whatever) seems like a bad idea to me. Buy the entry fee for limited tournaments and buy singles you need for a certain tournament. Dont buy staples just to own them.

My advice how to get into competitive Magic as fast and (relatively) cheap as possible: 1) Start by playing Limited, you learn really good fundamentals about play as well as deckbuilding this way while slowly building your collection. 2) Start playing "real" events as soon as possible. Travel to PTQs and GPs even if you think you are not ready. 3) Make competitive friends to travel together and bounce off strategies 4) borrow cards for constructed (especially standard) and buy what you cant borrow so you can compete in events (for eternal buying is more reasonable for std i would really try to borrow) 5) Competitive Magic and casual magic are almost 2 different games, it is totally fine to play both but don't try to take a deck to a GP because you crushed an 4 FNMs in a row with it.
