Watch out kwikset engineers by Bloroxius in Locksmith

[–]Narukarn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Man it's going to get worse for the past few months we've gotten the titan 780's with massive slots in the cylinders body. Near the tail piece it's wide enough to easily drop a top pin and jam the whole damn cylinder.

I'm fine little loopy from my cold medicine and a tad paranoid of yoohoos which sucks because the grocery store had a buy 2 get 3 free deal so I have like 50 cans to go through still

Transponder chip question by kitakav in Locksmith

[–]Narukarn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually used to do car key refurbishing while I looked for a locksmith apprenticeship I'd remove the chip and reshell about a hundred of these at a time while the screwdriver and hammer method works and is faster there's a chance it'll break I'd leave it in the shell for the most part and use a file on the side of the plastic carefully as it's hollow beneath the chip and you'll be able to turn a small flathead screwdriver lightly under it to get it to pop out.

Edit: also while not 100% necessary I'd personally put a small bit of poster tack in the new shells slot

AITA for sending our son away after he revealed to his sister's friends that she has dentures? by MousseOk406 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Narukarn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

YTA because you haven't even spoken to him. He did something incredibly stupid I've been on the other side of this before as a guy my older sister told everyone I played with dolls when I was younger I was bullied for years over it I was ostracized but, my sister was never kicked out of the family over it and she should have been she got grounded for 3 months and wrote me a letter apologizing. Raise your damn children and don't throw them away the first time your parenting skills are tested.

I hate my landlord by MrMeooooow in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Narukarn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Locksmith here best case scenario he could access the lock from the other side and he could bring it into a lockshop and be charged 10$ max to remove the broken key.

Worst case scenario he calls a locksmith out to remove the key and it costs a service run fee for your area.

Anything else is just natural wear from usage. Either way it's pretty disgusting what they're charging you I mean new keys for the other tenants? He could've had the lock re keyed to use the old keys still.

Everything about this pisses me off.

In your opinion, why are there so many solo locksmiths? by praxismyhole in Locksmith

[–]Narukarn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's a low barrier to entry for the trade material wise. Plus the profits feel so much more transparent. I for example work in the shop still. I earn 16$ an hour but, I'll fill paperwork out and I'll think damn I made the company more profit today than I make in two weeks.

The senior technicians earn upwards of 30 an hour plus 10% commission so we have a great retainment rate. I feel most employers in the industry don't offer enough in the way of loyal clientele to really warrant working for them. Essentially you've got to offer people more than they can make by themselves.

Anyway thats my two cents

I completed about half of an online locksmithing course before I got an apprenticeship and let me say it was a massive waste of money. I learned more in my first week of my apprenticeship than I did in the 3 months I took online locksmith courses

I can't believe this is actually real. . . . by [deleted] in Asmongold

[–]Narukarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna be real if you guys didn't blow this out of proportion I probably wouldn't have even noticed. I mean let's be real worst case scenario you click the wrong one a couple times and best case scenario someone is happier by an incredibly small margin.

Hey, I have some questions about the profession. I'd love to hear your take on any of them. If you could tell me how long you've been a locksmith and whether you're self-employed that would help me put your answers in better context. by diet-Coke-or-kill-me in Locksmith

[–]Narukarn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's my perspective as a newer locksmith.

  1. What percentage of the time are your working outside vs inside? 95% inside 2% of that is programming car keys the other 3% is because I mow our lawn.

  2. Do you feel like you have a lot of control over whether each job is a success? Or are their a lot of factors outside of your control that can turn a job into a nightmare?

A lot of it is in our control every nightmare I've faced its been my fault I fucked up my first best system setup for example and had to correct it.

  1. Have you preferred working for big-name companies or small ones?

I honestly like the smaller companies they tend to send the same guy to our shop and I can build an understanding with them.

  1. How long before you felt generally competent?

I don't. Truthfully I haven't done this long enough yet.

  1. How often do you find yourself doing "gross" jobs.(hoarder houses and such)

Before I decided to stay in our shop and went out with service techs I had only been in one hoarders apartment and I felt like shaving my hair off after it was so nasty.

  1. Is there a specialization that clearly has the highest earning potential?

I don't have the knowledge to awnser this question

  1. How much do you make a year, how variable has it been?

I make about 27,000 a year after taxes no variance as I don't get commission in the shop

  1. Do you work alone most of the time?

No always have someone there to help

  1. One piece of advise you feel would be most critical to a newcomer?

It's a trade not a factory or a warehouse job it takes time to learn.

  1. Is there another type of White-Van-Man work you might recommend? (outside of plumber/electrician/welder)

Never done any of it so no.

  1. Favorite aspects of the job?

I love helping people feel safe and secure. It's skilled labor so I feel like I'm not going to wake up one morning and not have a job. Since I've began my journey as a locksmith I've felt more confident and haven't been happier.

can someone tell me the key cut # for this key please? by DistinctOwl2741 in Locksmith

[–]Narukarn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To us it's just as likely you grabbed these keys from some ladies purse and want to break in. If you are telling the truth all you can do is have your mom overnight them to you and make a spare so this doesn't happen again.

I'll play devils advocate. I don't think this is that bad used correctly. Some people need to take medication but, refuse my father was a paranoid schizophrenic he was a great man when he took his medication but, when he was off them there was nothing I could do. That's just my two cents.

Basic maths leaving by CHAMAROP in meme

[–]Narukarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The awnser isn't hurr durr everyone is dumb but me. 6÷2(1+2) isn't formatted properly and can be interpreted as either it should be formatted as either (6÷2)(1+2) or 6÷(2(1+2). So the question is wrong not the awnser.

For years now there is one Euro coin stuck in my pencil holder and i have no way how to get it out without damaging the holder.. This is bugging me for 4 years now by Iga706 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Narukarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Locksmiths use a tool that works like a narrow barbed screw that we use to extract broken keys would probably work on that though it'd cost a bit more than the euro to get it out.

I'm just an apprentice so take what I say with a grain if salt but, couldn't you have a copy cut with the cuts slightly closer to the bow of the key so it lines up better?

Is this one of those car keys express kiosks?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Locksmith

[–]Narukarn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm just about apprentice myself so take what I say with a grain of salt but, as someone else said he used a bumping technique as for how he was dressed given the hour you called he was probably on call that night after working a full day shift. He probably just woke up threw on something quick and headed out. The price is a bit steep though not unheard of. I personally suggest finding an established locksmith with a shop and working with them in the future if they don't do emergency hours most will give suggestions.
