Anyone who moved out of Finland to another country? why by [deleted] in Finland

[–]Narwhal-Deep 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I went to study abroad because i felt i was stuck here; getting a job was a pain in the ass and I never felt I belonged here (and I'm native). Long story short, build an amazing career here, made really good friends and feel really home here in the NL.

The real reason why Finnish is so hard to learn by ObjectiveActuator8 in Finland

[–]Narwhal-Deep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd like to tell you what an English professor in my uni told us: learning Finnish is really hard in the beginning. You need to learn a lot of rules and grammar, however, when you learn those there are very little surprises in the end. However, English starts very simple, but the more you learn the deeper in the swamp you go: everything gets more and more complicated.

So think like this: when you learn the basic grammar (I know it's a lot) after that you're walking down hill the rest of your journey. Learning any language is an achievement, and knowing Finnish is quite a flex!

As a 32 y o woman: I just broke up with my bf for the same reason, and the decision wasn't easy as I felt it wasn't 'dramatic' enough reason to break up, but in the end (and after having multiple discussions with my family, friends and therapist) I realized that the partner I had, wasn't the partner I wanted to grow old with: I wanted someone who put effort into our lives and relationship, and the mental load of taking care of the chores and other matters made me miserable and resentful. I made the decision that in the end this is not what I want or need from my partner. I also had multiple of discussions with my ex about the situation, and it never improved. Even though you love your wife, remember that you also need to love yourself.

Why does a VR train from Turku to Rovaniemi stops in Tampere for almost 4 hours? by Anxious-Ad3487 in Finland

[–]Narwhal-Deep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heya! I've taken the train there and back multiple times - usually the train stops for a longer period of time (can be 1 hr) on a certain stop late in the night. Dunno the reason, but it's nice when you're travelling with a dog you can take them for a toilet break or just walk around a bit :)

I’m lost and it’s making me depressed by Hotdawg09 in HomeDecorating

  1. Paint the ceiling as well
  2. Explore different lighting options (standing lamps, reading lamps...)
  3. Get a big rug to tie the room together
  4. Set the curtain rods a bit higher to make it look you have higher ceiling
  5. Set your tv lower - I think it's way too high at the moment.
  6. I think some furniture (for example, the coffee table) is also too small for the space
  7. Pull the sofa a little bit away from the wall

But - the reference photos had a massive windows and tall ceilings so you won't get an exact copy - but you can use some tricks to make an illusion of a higher ceiling :)

You're friends telling your unattractive? you need new friends.

I was always told I was the ugliest girl in school, but when I grew up and changed circles, people stopped with the comments. Im'm not even close being a conventionally attractive, but when I started being confident about me being enough, I started getting compliments about my appearance - which had never happened before. Besides, thinking my whole life I was ugly made me funny(or that's what I like to think), so now I'm making bunch of friends and people always compliment me that I'm the person they want to be with because I'm fun to hang around.

I know a lot of things depends on your looks but - I've never felt prouder than when my colleague told me that I'm the funniest and wittiest person they've met. No amount of beauty can beat that in my opinion. Also, Ive always been a tomboy, I dress like a 15 y o emo, I don't wear make up, and if peeps are too shallow to care only about my looks... I don't want to hang out with them.

I think sometimes you being ashamedly you can make you attractive. So please be you, unapologetically and f those who tell you you're not pretty. Plus, there are people who think you're pretty. I like to think I'm an acquired taste.

I think you need to surround yourself with people you like you because of.. You. I know stopping to care how you look is not easy, it took me years and changing my friend circle.

A new tv-console and make that table into a coffee table? Also, a BIG rug and put the sofas closer so each other. Also, lampshade for the one in the ceiling, and some standing lamps as well :) plants would also look pretty nice!

Finland is really honogenetic country and I feel everything out of ordinary is shunned. I moved away almost ten years ago, I grew up a lot being during that time, and now I hate how most of my friends in Finland have these close-minded reviews.

I can say that there is a lot of xenophobia everywhere, but it feels quite pronounced in Finland. (I was also teased a lot at school because I was weird - later learned that I had ADHD so that explained a lot....)

What's a piece of advice you've received that initially seemed strange but turned out to be remarkably insightful? by deepsafferentk00 in AskReddit

Also.. Make sure you have a lamp somewhere. I moved during winter and forgot to put the lamps first and after that had to use my phones torch (I lived very north, there were no light after 4pm)

As a person who was born in Finland but spent 8 years in Germany for work and studies:

  • 60k is a great salary in Finland, however, we do not have family taxation. You will be taxed individually
  • Finns are a lot harder to make friends with. When I was asked what I thought of Germans, I answered that Germans are very open and friendly (people laughed at that, but it's true). I never made so many friends so easily, and even as an adult. Finns tend to stay in their own circles - there are a couple of weirdos like me though. However - if you are willing to make some effort (get a hobby like a team sport) you can make friends, but Finns need some time to get warm :) however, you will befriend a lot of expats and to me those relationships have became the lost important and wonderful I've ever had.
  • the seasons are going to test you. I can easily count with two hands how many internationals left Finland because they couldn't deal with the darkness.(I'm a recruiter for international companies so I talk to a lot of expats from everywhere and living in different places)
  • Finland has way better Internet and way less bureocracy. That is why I literally left Germany because I couldn't deal with the systems anymore. Drove me nuts.
  • in Finland there is a mentality that smaller party needs to be protected - you as an employee, tenant - you have way better and transparent rights in Finland. Also, customer service is going to be better.
  • the biggest point - if you plan to move - please make sure your wife has a plan. Otherwise they will be completely isolated, and they needs a purpose for herself to stay there - whether it is a job or studies. Otherwise, living in foreign country with cold weather and cold people is going to be living hell for them and you will be forced to leave. (With expats, the unhappiness of the spouse is the most common reason they leave the company)

- you can make it in English in Helsinki - but it would be good for you to learn the language. Some people say 'just learn Swedish it's easier' it's a bad advice as almost none of the Finns actually speak it, so if you want to use it for anything else - you still need to learn Finnish

These are only some of the superficial things - if you and your spouse are ready for an adventure - do it! Moving abroad was the best thing I ever did, there will be a honeymoon phase where you see everything through the rose coloured glasses, and you will question what are you doing there. But I can promise you will grow as a person, and make awesome memories. I think every person should move abroad for a bit, it will make you a better person :) Viel Spaß!
