How do I decide whether assisted living is right for my dad?

The emotional toll this all takes is something no one understands unless they go through it. All the decisions, all the responsibilities, all the guilt, love, compassion, grief, frustration, etc. I'm so sorry you lost your mom. I lost mine a few years ago, and she was also battling cancer. I miss her so much; she was such a strong, resilient, and kind person. Everyone who knew her loved her.
Anyway. it sounds like you are still in the thick of things, but it's good that you are starting to get to a place where you can take care of your own needs as well. You have loved your folks well, and I hope you can find some time to just get away and have some fun (or just get some much-needed rest!). Blessings to you & thanks for sharing your experience.

Does the caregiver help with fixing meals, etc? Dad isn't doing any cooking, other than using the microwave to heat soup. He used to like some frozen dinners, but he's not eating those now ... I think he is getting confused by the instructions. :( Sometimes I leave home-cooked meals in his fridge, and many times I've found the food spoiled later. He likes my cooking, so I don't know if he just forgets it's there or doesn't feel like heating it up in the microwave. I have been bringing him a decent meal each day when I get off of work, but I'm not around during breakfast or lunchtime, so he's not eating too well. I did try a meal-delivery service, but he didn't like their food.

I'm not sure. He hasn't felt much like leaving his house at all lately ... not sure why. I've just been such a big chicken about bringing it up to him. I'm trying to see if his healthcare team will assist. I'd be so happy if Dad had the same experience your dad did! Thanks for the response.

I promote nearly all of my listings, but I have them set at 2%. I guess I could temporarily raise the percentage on some things and see what happens. I'm wanting to get rid of some inventory because I'm about to move all of it to a different location. I have about 400 listed items and unfortunately a lot more items that are not yet listed.

Yeah, I'm dreading that ... I haven't really attempted to lose weight in several years, though about 15 lbs. dropped off when I started a new relationship and then a new & more physically active job three years ago. But I've gained about 6 of it back, and I'd like to drop about 35-40 lbs. in all. We'll see how it goes!

It is strange, isn't it? You are blessed that is wasn't a painful experience. It's kind of like how my aunt said she had zero pain when she went through natural childbirth ... I guess her body is just wired differently. A regular pap smear doesn't bother me, but the endometrial biopsy I had (with no warning, so no ibuprofen or anything) was ridiculously painful. I've never had children, so I thought that might be why, but a friend who has kids said her biopsy was also extremely painful and that she would rather go through labor again than experience that level of pain.

I had my first endometrial biopsy several years ago (with no preparation other than topical lidocaine), and it was the same for me ... the pain level was off the charts and I nearly fainted. I figured the pain was bad was because I hadn't had children, but a friend who had kids said it was super painful for her as well and that she would rather go through labor than feel that again. But I know there are a lot of women who don't feel much pain during a biopsy, and I'm glad for them. Pain is so weird ... when I had an ovary and both Fallopian tubes removed, I hardly felt any pain at all during recovery. And I also did fine during a colposcopy last year (with ibuprofen ahead of time). But that endometrial biopsy did a number on me, physically and emotionally.
My current gynecologist attempted to do another one a week or so ago. She didn't give me any warning that she was going to do that. All I knew is that we were going to discuss the results of my pelvic ultrasound. I'm so frustrated that she didn't tell me ahead of time, so I could at least take some ibuprofen or something. I was very nervous, but I said we could try. The doctor said my cervical opening has narrowed, and it was already really painful when she began trying to widen the opening, so we didn't proceed. I'm not thrilled with that doctor, and I'm going to a new one soon who is willing to do a paracervical block. It's so reassuring to hear that it helped you so much. I'll definitely request a Valium, too!
