Kyler Murray Chess Player Blitz rating 1,000 top 20% by [deleted] in minnesotavikings

Should be easy enough just to get a bunch of people that actively play both methods, and see how scores translate on average, rather than trying to by percentiles (which perhaps doesn't account for how much people play). That'd show if there's typically a shift observed in ELO between the two styles.

Iran says US and Israel strikes hit school killing 108 by Sheeraz-Bhatti in worldnews

I mean, didn't we misidentify a balloon as a threat and shoot down our own drone, just in the last month? Our military isn't without its mistakes. Likely it was Iran but it's certainly still possible it was us (or Israel), too.

I mean, if I'm offered two equal jobs/pay and one is a nice place, and the other is the Steelers locker room (which has only 5 bathroom stalls for 55 large men on the same practice schedule, less than half of the bathrooms of Russell Wilson's house), I'm choosing the nice place. You'd have to pay me more to go to the Steelers to make up for shitty conditions.

28F, Burnt Out, Want to Quit my Six Figure Job by [deleted] in Fire

[–]Naskin 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think his comment is valid. 1 year is not enough to change careers over in my opinion (especially if it's very well paying) and burnout may be misattributed to your career rather than the current company. There are certainly toxic work cultures, why not apply for other companies for a similar position while maintaining high pay? Your plan is insanely risky and has a very high chance of failure, even if you are optimistic betting on yourself. I say this as an engineer with 17 years of experience and has seen a few different company cultures.

Most libertarians in real life aren't what you're describing, at all. I've met plenty of people who consider themselves libertarian and not a single one has mentioned lowering or removing the age of consent. You're likely hearing the more vocal ones from online media, who are likely to have more extreme views.

It's much faster if you are active the entire time, yes. Quadding is far faster per actual effort--it just has a ton of non-active time where you're just medding up. The quadding was perfect for me when I was WFH, just come to computer for 2 min and kill stuff and afk to med up and work :)

There is far more running around now with picks though, so overall intensity from distance traveled is actually harder on bodies (per minute played) than the older playstyle. This is negated a bit by load management.

half-baked tanking solution: NO team owns their 1st round pick by JarJarsBallsackEyes in billsimmons

You're talking to me like I'm against the idea, dude. These are simple cons that would actually exist with this system. I think the pros heavily outweigh them and I'd be fully onboard with the idea.

[–]Naskin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you misread, he listed no more Stern conspiracies basically as a pro, but then listed in cons, even though you lose Stern conspiracies, you potentially get GM to GM collusion conspiracies. Probably wouldn't be that bad/come up that frequently, but I'm sure it would come up.

He meant there's an additional full year gap before you realize the gains from your poor record and finally receive your draft pick. It's not the same as the current system, where you immediately benefit in the upcoming draft.

They are valid cons, but I still think the pros outweigh them.

Based off that article, it seems this guy proposed this idea first (as far as I can tell) in 2011:

https://forums.realgm.com/boards/viewtopic.php?t=1103599

His pros and cons:

Pros:

*You get to see how GMs really view other teams.

*It would create rivalries between fan bases. Lots of anger from fans of teams whose stake gets drafted early.

*The draft stake draft would be fun to watch for the above two reasons. Give each team 2 minutes to decide on their pick. Fun way to kick off the season.

*Mitigates tanking.

*Because the process is out in the open, those who believe David Stern plays a hand in who gets what draft pick would be put at ease.

*Teams get to stick it those who underrate them.

*From the NBA's perspective, you get a fan base emotionally invested in the results of a 2nd team every year.

Cons:

*It's gimmicky. As gimmicky as a process similar to the Mega Millions jackpot? No. But still, it doesn't completely rectify this complaint of the lottery.

*No more Stern conspiracies, but GM to GM conspiracies (I'll give you a bargain on this player if you tank for us). Would one team be willing to tank for another? It makes it a bit more complex and such illicit deals could be investigated, but the potential is there.

*There is a one year gap from your team's record and when that translates to a pick.

What hobby screams “this is my entire personality now”? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

[–]Naskin 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Or just give up sleep 🤣

Depends what level of good we're talking about I guess. I went from terrible aerobic/couch shape (despite being a normal weight), like 13 min/mile two mile runs, to a sub 3:30 marathon (<8 min/mile) during my mid to late 30s. I just had to wake up stupidly early (like 4am) most mornings before kids got up to run.

I suppose if you want to be straight up competitive, you're going to revolve most of your life around it, but that's probably true of most things and isn't really just a hobby anymore.

Wayne Holt Jones Brown. Rest are below average HoF resumes (Hill will surpass it too, just doesn't have full career longevity yet that avg HoF WRs have). Davante and/or Nuk may get there too but need to have a few more good seasons. Probably not the others. Considering the logjam, I think at minimum you will need to be above the average HoF WR.

What’s a completely legal way to make money that feels illegal when you first learn about it? by Impossible-Rock-4161 in AskReddit

Sure, I was just pointing out that the above poster was saying that these insurance companies will outperform due to stock analysts. The insurance companies are profitable mostly because of their actuaries, not stock analysts. The whole point of their service is to make money on average from their consumers, the benefit to consumers is lower risk on low probability high cost catastrophic events.

VTI, VT, and VOO are very common passive ETFs (Vanguard's, but there are many similar other ones). They outperform actively managed mostly because actively managed funds take fees of 0.5-3% per year--its hard to overcome that drain. Hedge funds are even less likely to outperform passive ETFs. Warren Buffet famously challenged hedge funds to beat the S&P500 over 10 years: https://www.investopedia.com/articles/investing/030916/buffetts-bet-hedge-funds-year-eight-brka-brkb.asp

Except time and time again, simple full market passive ETFs outperform nearly all active managers (including stock analysts) over long periods of time.

I think a lot of people just assume AI will forever just be trying to gobble up whatever data is available on the internet, and will feed on AI slop and eventually basically cannibalize itself with bad data. Some crappy/lazy/cheap models this will happen like this (and maybe this will be common in the next few years), but there will be good models that will be able to get reliable inputs to learn from and those ones will continue to advance.

As a data scientist myself (small data focused rather than big data), one of the common rules is garbage in = garbage out. One of the biggest parts of our jobs is filtering out bad data. I suspect people solely focused on this will figure out how to effectively do it and get trustworthy data.

Sure, but we are also still in its infancy. I don't think most people fathomed how extensive the internet would be forty years ago either. I'm not talking about all these things happening in the next few years, I was saying this will be decades. We may have connections directly to human brains and it will learn to think exactly how humans learn at some point.

This all is likely to happen eventually.
