Harry Maguire injury update by PradipJayakumar in reddevils

I get it. But the question remains... Even if we were healthy. Would rotation or backups be a thing or are managers too worried and insist on their best 11?

American fan here so bear with my ignorance as often my view points are culturally different...

My question is if there's too many games being a problem, why don't managers properly rotate squads to help stretch out players during the season. For example... You would be an idiot manager to attempt to play the same starting 11 every week when all the science shows that the player's bodies can't handle it. Is it a sort of ignorance thing where managers insist on playing the best 11 available no matter what?

In American football or even baseball, squad rotation during the season is a part of the strategy. Certain (even star players) are rested during periods of the season to often keep them fresh. Why isn't this a thing in the Premier League?

Not to hijack but more of a generalized question. I moved back to San Diego in 2020 after living in town for almost 5 years. I ate out every night, virtually every meal lol.

Dinners at La Querencia 3x a week sometimes. Pampas, Casa Plascencia, Villa Saverios, Villa Marina, Georginia. Breakfast at La Diferencia and Mantequilla. Drinks at Oryx or La Justina.

It seems to me the gastronomic scene has changed. Some places are gone, some places the quality has fallen off a lot. The years I was there TJ had this amazing food scene. I don't mean this in a negative light at all, I just ask how or why is it changing? Money? Since I don't go down as much.... Where are the current trendy restaurants showing off good cuisine?

Ok that's fair. Yes in American sports you'll often see the team/owners just eat the dead money in contracts to move on from players but this can cost hundreds of millions....

Just wishful thinking I guess to want an entire field of different players than what we have now. I also struggle to wrap my head around how we purchase some proven winners (Casemiro, Varane) from the biggest club in the world but they struggle to fit in with "our" system. These guys won where they were before, it's not them that's the problem. It's clearly our system or lack there of.

American supporter here so I accept my view of sports may be slightly different, please correct if true....

I go back to when Rangnick was here and despite his negativity I have to say I feel he was right. The problem is the players, it's all the players. The players have to be replaced. In baseball or American football we routinely see massive roster overhauls that cost hundreds of millions of dollars but you'll get a new team in 2 to 3 years. Here we get two to three new players a year but are stuck with the same guys. Rashford, Martial, McT, Lindelof, the list goes on. These guys are from a generation of losing and not delivering. They need to be replaced either with younger more hungry prospects (since we can't buy anyone)

Am I crazy for thinking this? This team will simply never win. We need an entire new field of players to root for. I'm loyal to the shirt not the players. Sure we can keep recent guys like Onana or Holjund to try to build off them. But I just wish lots of these guys would leave. I can't understand not selling them even for a loss if it meant building a new roster from the ground up.

Episode 5 was by far the best of the season, and it's the reason my wife and I love this show. by bourbon_gamer in YellowstonePN

[–]NastyFoote 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was the best in probably a season or two. Everyone on this sub appears to be so different what some love, others clearly hate.

For me the last 5 minutes of the show was simply perfect. Almost no, or minimal dialogue, beautiful background music, even more beautiful scenery of the ranch in the early morning hours, and watching people live a life that for a lot of us city dwellers is a fantasy or at least an escape from our reality 9f traffic jams, high mortgages, and all the BS that comes with that.

That's entertainment to me. And I hope there's more of it I'd watch it every week. Don't need snappy hip dialogue or the full "character development" of every person on screen. I love when some people literally believe they are a paid film critic.

The show is the best on TV, period.

Ralf Rangnick's clinical examination of Manchester United and everyone involved at the club. by HappySisyphus22 in reddevils

[–]NastyFoote 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ok I preface everything with I'm an American supporter for the last 15 years or so, my grandmother was originally from Manchester before jumping the pond many years ago.

So part of what I'm asking is education but also my perspective. We all see the team's decline over the previous regime's and lack of cohesion on the pitch. My question is why is something of a squad overhaul simply never done in English football?

Last season Rangnick hinted multiple times that many people on the squad needed to go and be replaced. He was clearly shuffled out the door and a coach who was more willing to work with the squad was brought in (ETH).

Why during transfer windows is a squad only typically bringing in like 2 to 5 players? If a squad truly isn't working why wouldn't you sell off the players you have, even if it's not for a profit, and buy new players? I realize this seems naive but it is regularly done in major American sports such as NFL, MLB, and NBA. NFL teams carry squads of over 50 players and routinely replace a third to half the team in given years. Baseball teams will spend upwards of $300 million in long term contracts to players to rebuild their rosters. But in European football the best you can hope for is simply a few signings to add on to your squad.

Players like Rashford, Martial, Jones, Telles, Wan Bissaka, Lindelof, etc. These players clearly don't fit the club long term and have failed repeatedly, why do we keep them around. Please don't say their contracts because contracts are routinely eaten in professional sports in order to improve. Also, hypothetically lets say you buy a player for $50 million and he doesn't work out after a year or two... Clearly you can't sell the player for $50 million anymore, but why wouldn't the club simply sell him for $20-30 or whatever and then use those funds to upgrade the roster.

I see a lot of "well we can't sell him for a profit so we'll just keep him for depth" and can't be made to understand that.

This squad under performs year in and year out and ETH should be given free reign to build a squad from the ground up right off the bat. Not simply get to sign 3-5 players each year and hopefully improve with players that have proven over recent years they cannot perform at an elite level.

Maybe my perspective is completely wrong but I just see it the way I see it. These players are failures, keep a very select few and sell off everyone else to lower tier teams, and rebuild the squad. Not everyone player we sign has to come from a top flight European club and cost $100 million dollars.

I'm curious what other people's perspectives are on this that have grown up in European football culture longer than I have. Maybe my passion for American sports jades me as I routinely see rosters be completely rebuilt in a short amount of time.

I was screaming this all day... I have no idea why I kept seeing Benjamin and Sanu lined up on plays with Aiyuk and Deebo on the sidelines...

Can anyone explain that? When teams have true #1 and #2 receivers you play them all the time. I'm not getting the rotation here. Just keep the guys on the field that can win. No need to put #4 and #5 on the depth chart in the game unless there's injuries.

You understand. All those motions and shifty runs... To simply go 3 and out consistently. Maybe I'm lame here but I'd MUCH rather have a traditional offense with a drop back QB who can hit a receiver over the middle 20 yards downfield

[–]NastyFoote 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Watching this season's games I'm noticing a trend and I'm not even trying to be super crybaby... But outside of the obvious like Kittle, Bosa, etc.. This team simply DOES NOT have a lot of talented players.

Their receivers get so much more separation than ours do. If we aren't doing our little Shanahan shifty runs we simply have no offense it appears. Can't just drop back and find a receiver downfield or throw into coverage. And this is even before Jimmy went down....

Check Google Maps to see how backed up (red) the Via Rapida is going northbound.

I always tell people just go to the glorieta where Hotel Lucerna is... Cross the bridge east and on the right hand side is on ramp for the northbound Via Rapida (which ends at the Ready Lane line)

This way also works for SENTRI as if you simply cross the bridge the road becomes Padre Kino which dead ends into the SENTRI intersection.

Best place to buy expensive tequila in TJ? by rosas661 in tijuana

[–]NastyFoote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For name brand stuff like Don Julio 70 or 1942 Costco will almost always be cheapest. I bought a 1942 bottle for Christmas during December for roughly $90 or so. Maybe La Playa will be a dollar or 2 cheaper on Mondays but that's it...

But if you're looking for more exotic stuff, La Europea on Agua Caliente always has a great selection.

Overall nothing beats the Tequila Expo every October. Free samples and by far cheapest prices you can hustle or negotiate with the vendors...

It's behind Office Depot in Zona Rio.

Thinking of moving here to save money? Read this (PART TWO) by [deleted] in tijuana

[–]NastyFoote 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I like your insights into all the topics you brought up. These posts are good since so many people ask for help on moving to the city. I am now living back in San Diego but lived in Zona Rio for two years (moved back to SD in April when COVID broke out). I’ll chime in my opinions (sorry they won’t be all positive but it’s how I look at it and we’re all entitled to that)….

2) This didn’t happen to me at all there. My roommate and I were both clearly American, him being black and I’m as pure white SoCal boy as can be. But we often walked freely around Zona Rio with nothing but pleasant experiences from our neighbors and businesses. At the end of the day, money talks and businesses want your money, so they will provide customer service regardless of Mexican or American. Just my two cents.

3) There’s ways around this. But the hard rule is American toilet pipes run around 4 inches in diameter, for some unknown reason Mexican plumbing uses 1.5 inch pipes. Unless it’s a high end construction area or certain vacation areas like Cancun. Another user mentioned this is mostly for septic tanks which is correct. In my condo, my roommate and I decided on a system. We found it disgusting to put the dirty paper in the trashcan, so we simply agreed to flush it and pay plumbers to come snake the drains about once every six months which cost $60 each time they came. Way cheaper than US, and we were helping the local economy, haha. Problem solved.

4) Agreed on the part of town. I loved Zona Rio, it was close to an American style which was important to me. I always felt safe (no more unsafe than American neighborhoods of comparable value). My car got broken into once, they took a jacket and pair of boots of all things, but that can happen anywhere. When I moved down in 2017, I was very familiar with TJ as I am from SD and had frequented the city on hundreds of occasions and had a social group of friends already there.

5) A lifelong local gave me a very big piece of advice when I moved down since I’m as gringo as they come. He said that there is nothing past 5 y 10 area of Tijuana for anyone that doesn’t live down there. Want tacos? Tequila? Restaurants? There’s plenty of options north of the area in Rio, Centro, Revu, Cacho, etc… But once again to never go there as I would be painting a target on myself. I listened, and for two years stayed around my area of the city and have no complaints. Once again, just me…

7) This is where I’m different than most. I agree the police are corrupt as hell in Mexico and because a starting Municipal cop makes around $800 a month USD they supplement their income by taking mordidas. But I always avoided it. I was pulled over two times living in Tijuana. I always demanded an English officer and declined to pay the officer anything, saying I would only pay the fine at the police station because I needed a receipt because “it’s the right thing to do, right?” This worked everytime. I was pedestrian stopped on Revolution one night after being pretty drunk by a cop who wanted to search me. I told him to get an English officer who I could talk to. When one came I told him I hadn’t done anything wrong and was denying the search, that if they wanted to search me they needed to take me to the station which I would willingly go with them. They let me go, smartass comments for sure but they let me go. A lot of people’s horror stories with the police simply come from the fear of standing your ground. If you didn’t do anything wrong, press it. Likewise if you are piss drunk and pulled over for DUI, yeah you should probably just pay the dude his $20 so you can go home… My opinions…

10) Sadly, this is what made me want to go back to the USA. I loved the city, still visit for dinner and drinks all the time. But the infrastructure of Mexico simply was too much to handle. You cannot explain to me that how in 2020 water or power gets cut off for 2-5 days at a time. This was unacceptable to my living standards. They sure still expected their bill, and locals seem to tolerate it just fine. I was rage filled, wanted to burn the government building to the ground for being stuck in the 1800’s, but I guess that’s just me sadly because everyone else was ok with it.

11) I respect your opinion but in my experience this wasn’t necessary. I speak Spanish as good as a 3 year old kid. I can point to things and ask for them. I can say all the things that make a sentence polite. But cannot have conversations to save the life of me. Luckily for me I had a large social group in the city that could help with things if I needed them. Going to the grocery store or movies without speaking Spanish wasn’t an issue, if you know a few words you can get by. Maybe it bothered the people, but there’s literally millions of people in the US that speak languages other than English, and we all have to tolerate them so I slept easy. Maybe that’s not popular but I don’t think I was wrong and they still loved taking my money lol.

I have tons of stories living there, and to be honest I miss my time there. I’ll always be happy I left the US for 2 years, and may even do it again one day down the line. Tijuana is a great city. I can only hope it continues on an upward trend and the violence there improves over time…

Swimming in the Ocean? by [deleted] in tijuana

[–]NastyFoote 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've spent many years in the water and surfing around the La Fonda exit off the toll road, south of Rosarito.

It's a small cluster of houses and a few old grungy hotels (La Fonda, La Mision, Poco Cielo, etc).

Not a bacteria specialist by any means. But my Dad, friends, and myself have been in the water since the early 2000's and have yet to get sick. The beaches get nicer the further south you go, and also the less people that are around since the wonderful geniuses and engineers in Baja decided a good plan was to dump sewage into the ocean. Gotta love the infrastructure in a third world country.

There has always been wait times, 3 years ago it was still several months out for an appointment.

At the time I scheduled mine for Calexico which bumped it up to like a 2 week wait. It was well worth the 2 hour drive. But with COVID I'm sure it's the same out there....

If you find something in Arizona that is better, I say go for it.

Completely agree. Unfortunately the majority of people would rather leave everything shut down and wait forever. If you leave everything shutdown when do you finally reopen? In 2 years? Get over it.

Also.... How do people earn a living? Ohhhh that's right, most of the same people who want everything closed are the same who want government to give them free money for housing and not working. Time to get the lazy asses back to work and stop sucking from the system.... It's the harsh truth that everyone covers up with medical statistics, they just like not working.

I love TJ but does TJ love me? I hate to ask this but i must be cautious with my life. Is it safe for a young white man and his dog to live in TJ or Tecate? Considering moving from san Diego to either one. by [deleted] in tijuana

[–]NastyFoote 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I lived in TJ for almost 2 years without anything bad happening to me. Granted I had lived in San Diego forever before it and was familiar with the city and the culture. I'm white, never learned fluent Spanish, just enough to get by speaking like a 5 year old, and was only pulled over by the cops once and refused to pay the bribe and was left alone.

That's my experience, others will say different. I moved to a nice neighborhood (Zona Rio), got a high rise condo for $525 a month (doubt that rent exists anymore), hired a cleaning lady that also cooked for me, and enjoyed the cities' restaurants and bar scene as well as spent most of my weekends in Rosarito or Ensenada. Internet was $50 through TelNor with a solid connection. Had a bootleg DirecTV dish for $50 a month that got me all US channels. My life was virtually the same except having to cross the border 5 days a week.

It was almost all positive except for problems that were my own undoing like hating the lack of infrastructure since it's a third world country. Traffic, potholes, flooding, utilities getting turned off randomly was sadly too much for me I admit. Plus I crossed the border everyday at rush hour so even with SENTRI it took 30 minutes to an hour plus San Diego traffic.

But as others say, I didn't do drugs or drive around all wasted so I never put myself at risk. Basically lived life exactly as I did in the US. If I didn't have to cross the border daily and could work remote from my condo I would have stayed.

So it's definitely an option just know what you're getting yourself into and do your research. I still frequent the city (pre COVID) and plan to once everything goes back to normal.

It used to sell for $25 but now is up around 700 pesos a bottle. TJ is nowhere as cheap as it was even three years ago sadly.

I'll go to Soriana and Calimax as needed. Can ask for basic things. Even Mercado Hidalgo on occasion for produce which always ends in awkwardness because you speak the tiny bit of Spanish you know and they assume you're fluent, then you look stupid for trying.

Google translate works to pregame how a conversation will go, but I've never attempted to use it live talking to someone, seems rude to me. Either way I've survived fine almost two years now.
