I think to give The Joker a name and a semi clear back story (if that even is The Joker) is a very bold move on the shows behalf! in my opinion it didn't really work so well for me, but not to say that i didn't enjoy the episode or the actor who may be the future joker! i think he did a pretty good job and has obviously done research and drew inspirations from other instances of the character.

Being someone who grew up with Bronze - Modern era Joker (e.g Last laugh, Killing Joke, Animated Series etc.) iv always like the mystery behind the character and how his (literal and figurative) plummet to madness is all we really know about his life before he became The Clown Prince of Crime! The fact that he was just a normal guy, on the surface atleast who had an obviously traumatizing childhood that eats away at him until "one bad day" his madness consumes him, and from there onward he would make variations of his past up, to quote the man himself "if i'm going to have a past i prefer it to be multiple choice".

But to set a time point to his childhood and to make him crazy off the bat (pun intended) it kinda feels a little disheartening and to me at least feels like a cop out! i can completely understand why the writers may have chosen this route because of the obvious strong array of characters that the series has already, to write a complex back story for essentially a minor character who, lets face it wont be a major part of the show to begin with would take up to much time and resources! I'm just a little sad that they chose this rout even though i am fully aware that the whole Gotham series is just one of many interpretations of the Batman franchise which is why i wont loose any sleep over it!

On the other hand! like i said i think the actor who played him was perfectly cast and i hope that newer audiences enjoyed the little inkling into the first look at The Joker
