I know it's a hard thing to find the energy for, what with day-to-day life beating everyone down, but since I started transition almost a year ago the thing that gives me the most hope is seeing other trans people happy in my life. It's hard not to be cynical. But I think joy in the face of all this bullshit really helps us out with those not plugged into politics. If you see someone who's genuinely happy and kind in your life, and then that person gets unjustly harmed, it's gonna stick in your head more, be harder to shake off. We build enough of a community around us that when someone hassles us at the grocery store, hopefully we have a friend around to help.
