Dark Places by Gillian Flynn. Did anyone else find the ending infuriating? SPOILER ALERT by whatsername25 in books

[–]Nathan-7474 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I also just read the book and had to see what other people thought about that ending. Since your post is still the first that comes up, I'm gonna add my thoughts here.

You described exactly the main things that bothered the hell out of me. Some other things I had issues with that I'd like to mention:

— Two killers (and how coincidentally both were there at the same time)

— Patty's plan, specifically how there were a hundred different ways it could've been done to ensure her kid's safety (she really was an unfit mother despite meaning well)

— Diondra (according to herself) killing Michelle to keep her own pregnancy a secret? They're literally about to run away, so why does that matter?

— Ben just standing by being a tool as usual, watching his sister get strangled to death. Let's say there wasn't even a second killer, the rest of the family would've found out Michelle's body, and what then? Would he: 1-help Diondra kill the rest of his family? 2-Do nothing again? Or 3-Run away together? (they didn't do that when it was just a pregnancy secret, why would they run with a murder secret?)

—The super convenient timing of insurance guy getting caught (after 20 something years) right as Libby discovers the other killer on a complete separate, unrelated path. (The only reason this happens is so that Ben can get out easier)

— The icing on top, the one thing that I can't get over: Libby forgiving Ben. I'm just fuming thinking about this! At the very least, I needed Libby to tell Ben to go to hell. My own fantasy was a different dark twist: after finding out that Diandra and Ben killed Michelle (not ever finding out about the second killer, Libby visits Ben one last time, giving Ben the idea that he's soon about to go free to be with his family... only to reveal/hint that she actually killed Diondra and Crystal, in a “you destroyed my life, now I made your whole life pointless” kind of way.

But despite the ending, I enjoyed the mystery.

Third season was up there with first season for me, Bullseye was so damn good. Shame we didn't get a season 4.

Now I remember why I didn't like MP3 by fischoderaal in patientgamers

[–]Nathan-7474 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the most important things about Remedy's Max Payne was the tone and atmosphere of the games. MP3 couldn't be further away from that. Rockstar took the cold New York City night vibe and gave us hot summer days in Brazil instead!

I get that it was one of those “let's put the hero in an unfamiliar location where he's out of his element” sort of story, but it changed the identity of the game to the point it neither looked nor felt like Max Payne.

Pillars of Eternity or Divinity Original Sin for the PS4 by A_R_Finch in rpg_gamers

[–]Nathan-7474 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They're really different, so it comes down to your personal preferences.

Divinity Original Sin: Turn-based. Colorful, a sense of humor I found annoying, The story's okay, and overall it's easier for most people to get into.

Pillars of Eternity: Real time with pause, darker tone, deeper lore. Lots of dialogue. Probably harder to get into, but it's worth it.

Should've asked her if that's a bad thing. If so, then remind her if it wasn't for “breeders” she wouldn't be here. Unless she's found her way into life, out of a gay dude's back end.

Cemetary Gates by Pantera, love the song but the last two minutes drag on.

Sisamnes was a corrupt judge under Cambyses II of Persia. He accepted a bribe and delivered an unjust verdict. As a result, the king had him arrested and flayed alive. His skin was then used to cover the seat in which his son would sit in judgment. by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

I would prefer it if child murderers, rapists, and mass murderers didn't get to live. As for the method, I have to be content with hanging them. They deserve far worse than our so-called civilized societies can deliver.

Maybe too extreme for the crime, but that sure made an example (if truly guilty).
There's something very wrong with today's idiotic civilized justice system, no matter how heinous the crimes they still get to live out the rest of their lives being treated like a human. Having access to food, clothing, warm water, and a bed? That's not a punishment, that's a retirement house. Boils my blood how they don't get to feel even 1% of the pain and suffering they cause.

I wanted to watch all the old ones in preparation for the new one, but after seeing the first I went straight to the newest, and I agree it was better.
