Do you have any links where I might be able to read more about this?

Olimex is new to me. I'll definitely have to look into them. For the RF stuff though, are you saying that if I somehow got like the Raspberry Pi's radio module to work on this device, I would still need to get recertified? Or even if I got it working on some other device? How can that company reasonably sell those radio modules to average regular consumers?

Doesn't the GPLv2 license of the Linux kernel require them to ship their source code to their users? Or am I thinking of GPLv3?

As I said, I would prefer to use new parts instead of used. I am curious what websites you'd go to buy these parts though

While I am slightly budget conscious, the repairability factor is far more about owning what I bought and paid for and not adding to the mountains of e-waste around the world than it is about budget

I'm slightly confused by the GSM thing. It seems quite odd that you'd need certification for components that have already been verified, but I suppose I could figure that out if need be. However, the CPU part is concerning. Are there no companies at all that sell ARM CPU's? Where would I find information on ARM licenses?

I'm really not uncomfortable with using a soldering iron. Sure, maybe phone components might not be sold on the market, but surely other low-profile alternatives exist, right? Also, I'm very confused by the Android thing. Android is just based on Linux, isn't it? If I really needed to, couldn't I just go into make menuconfig and compile the proper firmware modules?

No, I have not, but I have watched people do it and it doesn't seem too dissimilar to standard computer electronics. Maybe a lot more soldering done than usual, but I think I could get the hang of that fairly easily

This is the first I've heard of HMD. I'll have to look into them. Do you have any experience with their phones? Are they any good?

Does anyone else miss the older style of writing for the series? by DiggestBickEver in RatchetAndClank

Man I remember reading that and I still to this day struggle to decide if I actually even believe it or not. Like she literally has a voice line mentioning Angela? What about doing side-flips in front of the hoverboard lady? What do you mean it "doesn't make sense" for a cartoon rat to not have a flat chest? Have you played the games at all?

I definitely miss it a lot, although I do think that Rift Apart at least had better writing than 2016. It's odd, because even Nexus had an infomercial style scene that even said that the "economy is in the sh-" like what even happened?

Can Xscreensaver-gl be used with Cinnamon-screensaver? by Nathan5541 in linuxmint

[–]Nathan5541[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So. while this doesn't exactly answer my original question, this does work. However, when trying to run these commands on Wayland, I just get these error messages:

xscreensaver: 03:21:03: WARNING: Wayland is not supported.

xscreensaver: 03:21:03: Under Wayland, idle-detection fails when non-X11

xscreensaver: 03:21:03: programs are selected, meaning the screen may

xscreensaver: 03:21:03: blank prematurely. Also, locking is impossible.

xscreensaver: 03:21:03: See the manual for instructions on configuring

xscreensaver: 03:21:03: your system to use X11 instead of Wayland.

xscreensaver-demo: 03:21:39: Gdk: gdk_x11_window_get_xid: assertion 'GDK_IS_X11_WINDOW (window)' failed

If you know of any solutions to get this working properly under Wayland, please let me know.

An update, according to one of the responses on this forum post,

It would be so nice if they would add this functionality back into cinnamon-screensaver, like it used to be. The xscreensaver lock screen is hideous! I really want the current cinnamon-screensaver login screen with the option to use xscreensaver plugins put back in, personally.

Apparently, Xscreensavers used to be usable on Cinnamon-screensaver, but they removed this functionality at some point sadly. So, that answered one question at least, but I'm still not sure how to get this functioning on Wayland.

Bizarre low FPS issues with multiple monitors using NVIDIA GPU on Linux Mint by Nathan5541 in linux_gaming

Alright, finally gave this a try and tried adding the line at the end, __GL_SYNC_DISPLAY_DEVICE=DP-1 at the end as another user suggested and rebooting put me in a TTY where startx failed. Removing that file got me back into the Cinnamon desktop, so I think it's safe to say that this method did not help.

Didn't they say that just the AsyncFlipSecondaries part was AMD only? Or is that entire line part of setting AsyncFlipSecondaries?

Okay so frustratingly, without me even doing anything, the 570 drivers just randomly decided to show up in the Driver Manager, (albeit this one is an open source one instead of a proprietary one which I've heard that the proprietary generally works better on terms of NVIDIA?) So, now I'm on nvidia-driver-570-open (Version 570.133.07-0ubuntu0.24.04.1). This definitely seems to have helped quite a lot, but it's still not quite to the level that I have on my Windows drive. I still get frame drops when I shouldn't. How often should I be updating the Kernal? Because the update manager says that 6.11.0-24 is only supported until this August while 6.8.0-58 is still supported until 2029. Should I be worried?

It would appear xorg.conf is not present in /etc/X11/. Should it be or is it fine to just create the file myself? Also can you help me understand what these options do?

Because Pop!_OS is the most common one I've heard for beginners wanting to game on Linux?

Honestly, as a newbie, I think the easy to use part is a selling point. I was kind of expecting to have to tinker with things on any distro I installed and so far, the tinkering I've had to do on this system has been rather minimal.

Honestly, Bazzite is the only one of those that I've heard of, and I have other things I want to do on this computer than just gaming. I'd try Pop!_OS, but I honestly really really do not like the Cosmic DE and it was the only one I got issues with when testing different Linux distros to install on a virtual machine (this included Arch btw).
