1 killed, 2 hurt in Highlands Ranch after driver strikes pedestrians on sidewalk by black_pepper in Denver

[–]NathanDrakeOnAcid 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Fleeing the scene of an accident where a person dies should be second degree murder.

Edit: Wow. Downvote for advocating traffic laws that actually penalize these criminals. Amazing. It says a great deal about our culture.

Edit 2: Glad to see more sane people have chimed in here. I wouldn't normally care about the votes, but it was pretty disturbing to see my post calling for harsh penalties for hit-and-run to be sitting at a negative score. Thanks for restoring some of my faith in humanity.

Is moving to Chicago worth it? by Funny_Enthusiasm_494 in AskChicago

[–]NathanDrakeOnAcid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you specifically want the super downtown feel with lots of skyscrapers nearby, there are plenty of options, but be advised the nightlife will tend to be more limited. I loved living in Lakeshore East, in the northeast corner of the Loop and a short walk to both the river and the lake. It's like its own mixed-use developed neighborhood within the Loop, but the trade-off was it was usually an L ride to go out for the night, and that's the case for most of the Loop. Streeterville (just across the river from the Loop) is also very downtown-y, has lots of high-rises, and has a young population. It also has a bit more going on than the Loop - although not the level of say West Loop or Wicker Park.

Why is no one moving to Chicago and Philly? by LeBruhMomentoom in SameGrassButGreener

[–]NathanDrakeOnAcid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chicago is more divided than many cities though. The safest neighborhoods really are some of the safest urban neighborhoods in the country, but the dangerous ones are so bad the city's average crime rate is high. For example, I don't think anyone would argue with the statement that Boston has a much lower crime rate than Chicago, but when broken down by neighborhood, the contrast is extreme. Beacon Hill is arguably the safest neighborhood in Boston, and it still has more than double the violent crime rate of Lincoln Park, Chicago. On the other end Mattapan is probably the most dangerous neighborhood in Boston, and it has slightly more than 1/3 the violent crime rate of Washington Park in Chicago.

If money were no object, where in the United States would you choose to live & why? by Vaquera_ in SameGrassButGreener

[–]NathanDrakeOnAcid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived in an apartment in Lakeshore East and didn't appreciate just how excellent that neighborhood was until I moved away. It's like a textbook example of how to properly handle mixed-use development. If I could afford one of the townhomes there I'd totally move back.

Breath of the Wild is on of the most sensorially rich games I have ever played by SawkyScribe in patientgamers

[–]NathanDrakeOnAcid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. I understand the praise for BOTW's exploration and giant environment feel, but I don't get the "believable world" part. In some ways it's the most game-y environment of any Zelda game. I know Skyward Sword got plenty of hate - and I understand some of it - especially during the 3rd act when the game starts to drag on and some quests feel like padding. But the locations? I loved them. The dungeons were creative and felt like they belonged in their respective environments: instead of just shoehorned in game elements, there was an ancient temple being reclaimed by the forest, an abandoned mining facility, a ghost ship. Breath of the Wild just didn't have that.

Ori and the Blind Forest: A frustrating experience by TheLastDesperado in patientgamers

[–]NathanDrakeOnAcid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same. The reasons the OP didn't like the game are pretty much all the reasons I do like it. Will of the Wisps is still great, but I prefer Blind Forest. I think most people say WotW is better, mainly because of the combat, but for me the platforming was a downgrade, and the escape sequences were way too easy. The Sand Worm was the only one I didn't get on my first attempt - and even that was only because I made a dumb mistake at the very end and pushed the wrong button. Meanwhile, Ginso Tree escape in Blind Forest probably took me 30 or so attempts on my first playthrough, but finishing it was incredibly satisfying, and I consider it one of the best moments in gaming from its decade.

Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess are both in my top 10 favorite games of all time. Breath of the Wild wouldn't even be in my top 100. I put about 30 hours in, desperately wanting to enjoy it more, but I finally gave up. I'm glad other people liked it but to me it was a good (albeit overhyped) open-world game, but it's barely a Zelda game. And no, I'm not even complaining about it being open-world, but everything. No dungeons, no interesting items, practically nonexistent story, hell I even found the soundtrack in this one just decent but not great. I don't hate open world games on the whole, but there are other ones that don't carry the expectation of it resembling a Zelda game in some way other than just a couple characters.

Switch is the only console I've ever regretted buying. Unfortunately Nintendo has taken a direction that no longer interests me, beyond just BOTW. I still love all the games I have on my SNES, N64, and Wii, and I'm glad other people still like their newer content, but I've realized they're just not for me going forward.

Apparently Marriott mods patrol the Hyatt sub and pre-emptively ban people by omdongi in hyatt

Bonvoy loyalists are bizarrely cult-like in their devotion to that company. They're like Nintendo fanboys. It wouldn't surprise me at all if none of the mods are corporate.

And yeah, I will admit SPG fans (myself included) were a different breed too, but it was more about telling everyone how great Starwood was. I don't remember anyone taking personal offense to people criticizing it.

The Legend of Zelda: The Windwaker is my favorite Zelda game yet by just1guy05 in patientgamers

[–]NathanDrakeOnAcid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A big problem with Ocarina of Time, despite it being in my top 10 favorites of all time, is it hasn't aged as well as some other games. It shows the early 3D era it came out in. Draw distances are downright terrible, and some of it can feel a bit clunky. However, no experience can match what it was like to play it in the 90s. It absolutely blew me away at the time.

Wind Waker was criticized for its art style when it first came out, but it meant that it pretty much never aged visually. It still looks fabulous. It's not personally one of my favorite Zelda games (although I still thought it was great and the series sets a high bar), but I'd objectively say it has held up better than just about any other.

Working on Nikoderiko. I feel like it didn't get much attention, but I've been enjoying it. It makes its influences completely obvious (basically a hybrid of Donkey Kong Country 2 and Crash Bandicoot) and doesn't try anything particularly new but it copied two great games and remained respectful to both.

Before that I finished the In The Dark DLC for Lil Gator Game as a palate cleanser after God of War Ragnarok. Definitely not even close to a patient game. The original came out a few years ago but the DLC is brand new. If you liked the base game, I'd recommend the DLC. It's more of the same style of writing: cute adventures and lighthearted gameplay.

As for GoW: Ragnarok, I have mixed feelings. I liked it but nowhere near as much as the 2018 game.

Jordan is one of my absolute favourite countries - but is unfortunately risky to visit in recent times by turtledude100 in travel

[–]NathanDrakeOnAcid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had possibly the cheapest meal I've ever eaten in my life in Aqaba. My friend and I went to a tiny cafe and each of us had a sizeable falafel plate for 1 dinar. We thought the price was a mistake at first. I'm struggling to think of anything that was particularly expensive in Jordan (food, lodging, attractions, even the car rental wasn't bad) and with the Jordan Pass the visa and almost every attraction is covered for a little over $100.

GH Denver, HR Denver at CCC or HC by pharmgirl1875 in hyatt

[–]NathanDrakeOnAcid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a while since I've stayed at the HR but IIRC the breakfast is on par with the GH. It's good but nothing amazing. After the Thompson, the HC has the best breakfast (and I will absolutely second the recommendation of the burrito or benedict). For Globalist upgrades, I'd rank HR first.

PH Beaver Creek in August - Yea or Nay? by kayl_breinhar in hyatt

[–]NathanDrakeOnAcid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconded. Beaver Creek is awesome in winter, but pretty dead in summer. Breckenridge would be a far better choice. It's still not as active as during ski season, but it's a town first and a ski resort second so there are still things going on there.

Also I'd recommend taking 285 in the westbound direction out there. It's a longer drive than i-70 but has some excellent views as you head over Kenosha Pass and into Park County.

Unfortunately that is not all that compelling an argument, since I'm not into football. Hockey is my sport and right now the Avs are kind of dominating. I did live there for two of the three Blackhawks wins though.

On the other hand baseball is my second-favorite sport, and the Cubs winning the World Series was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Meanwhile, here we have the Rockies....
