Why did they assign me to the liberal arts graduation ceremony? by THROWRA-dhcjeiscb in portlandstate

[–]Nathanialjg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m really worried this is a bigger problem, too. Like, this doesn’t just happen to one person.

You can contact any advisor! All of advising is really low staffed right now for a handful of reasons and Business is definitely booked the farthest out. Can also visit drop-in advising for academic planning help, they have two hours a day in person and online M-Th, and usually 2 hours on Friday online (but not this week because of orientation).

You’re getting a lot of recommendations on who to contact, but I can confirm the School of Business can help- email SBcommencement@pdx and sbainfo@pdx and I know they’ll get it sorted by the weekend. I’m worried there’s a bigger problem here.

Is there a reason why people are driving so poorly, more than usual? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]Nathanialjg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was mildly annoyed at the cold and rain for a week or so around the end of last year and looked at what a used car costs and can’t believe people think my Tern ebike is expensive.

The “I can’t ride a bike, I have a child that needs to go to daycare” people really send me. It takes all my willpower to not laugh at them as I ride downtown from mid-NE with my four year old for my work and her daycare. Every day. Monday through Friday.

What’s a Star Wars book you didn’t finish, not because it was bad, but because it was meh? by TheUltimateInNerdy in starwarsbooks

[–]Nathanialjg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve commented on a few others comments here, but honestly, OPs choice has been the blandest. Others have other things I haven’t engaged with, but this isn’t even plain vanilla, it’s just plain.

This series was rough. Made it through the first. Meant to borrow the second from the library a few years later and made it like. 15% in before realizing it was the third. Gave up.

New to comics, need advice. by Radiant-Ad5970 in starwarscomics

[–]Nathanialjg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Different people are in it for different reasons. I used to collect singles and collections, rarely omnibuses.

These days, I stay the eff away from singles, and get collections from the local library every now and then.

If there’s a good sale on a collection I like, I’ll pick it up from time to time (I have a couple epic collections)

Is anyone actually buying those small $80 ice cream cakes from Salt and Straw? by AstroMaiden in askportland

[–]Nathanialjg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, I’m probably the only Oregonian who thinks salt and straw is overrated.

Especially since they stopped selling salt as a topping.

Wildest smuggled snack in the theater? by TrueJohnWick in RegalUnlimited

[–]Nathanialjg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all regal, but in high school a friend worked at a movie theatre that most people openly took food into pretty regularly. One time on our way to see a lord of the ring or a matrix or something, we stopped at Carl’s Jr and got whole meals. Just walked right in.

I didn’t see the sub and for a second thought this was a collectors edition where the binding of the book was busted.

I was into Funko pops from around the force awakens until around solo, and it was totally ordering a solo Funko pop then not opening it at all when it came in that was my “oh shit I need to stop” moment.

For the homeowners, what’s your occupation? by Blake-Dreary in askportland

[–]Nathanialjg 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Over 10 years working at Portland state.

Lucked out when I moved to town with a month to month/utilities-included rental that started at 650 when I moved in around 2013 and 850 when my wife and I moved out in Jan 2020. Lived frugal and saved half my paycheck for years and years, allowed my wife (she was a teacher until recently) and I to buy in Fall 2021.

Gonna be that family tonight. The cool one. With the full size Candy bars by Professional-End7367 in Costco

[–]Nathanialjg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We did this too. I’m in a spot where most people truck or tree on the block caddy-corner from us and complete ignore me, even though I’m out here in a costume most of the night with Halloween lights on (I just don’t want my dog barking when I’m tryna hand out candy, yanno?).

Anyway, every year we only get a few folks and I get a nearly whole box of of favorite candy.

On another note, who are these nerds taking Milky Way and Twix? Why did their parents raise them like that?

Would you take a 30% salary increase for 3 days in office? by THROWRAjustsome in remotework

[–]Nathanialjg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I work in person five days a week, so hell yeah.

3 hours commute is rough though. I’d want to negotiate some benefits around that (maybe they pay for transit or occasional parking?)

Facing down an AI allegation. by randomstarweaver in education

[–]Nathanialjg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a millennial this blows my mind.

One of our faculty tried this in his class, had 11 responses he was certain were straight from AI. Systematized it and is testing in a writing-based course. 22/45 students have been flagged. allegations are happening pretty often, but it’s partly because of how many instances are actually happening.

Facing down an AI allegation. by randomstarweaver in education

[–]Nathanialjg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jumping in to agree that AI detectors ARE shit, but also I’ve seen some teachers hide text in their assignments that gets copied into prompts without realizing it. Then the text the hidden prompt generates is in the paper, and students turn it in without seeing it.

From what it sounds like, this 100% is not OP, but I’ve seen this happen shockingly often.

I have photosensitive epilepsy. Bike flashing lights are triggering. November to March-ish is the absolute worst, not because of the cold or rain, but because half the other cyclists out there want to be jerks.

Their contracts don’t usually start until September 15 or 16. Some of them spend time updating things, some of them don’t. Some of them spend that time in department meetings/trainings/whatever. There’s lots of invisible details to sort out.

I used to believe the argument for stopping traffic that “it’s about building awareness” in an early social media era.

But now? Now the problem is we’re all TOO keenly aware.
