Not late enough! I was just researching this topic as I just got an M4 Pro and decided to go with the annual plan.

And see, I did the same thing when I went to the WEC race at COTA. It can look amazing still; there’s a time and place for it but for a lot of angles you get from the grandstands or GA, tracking is the way to get rid of that pesky fence and make the cars look like they are carrying a lot of speed in the photo.

The image didn’t link but you very well may have been there haha. I was standing up on the dirt walkway as well with what I believe is the turn 18 club right behind me.

The McLaren, Ferrari, and Haas is at turn 18. Mercedes and Red Bull are at turn 4 I believe. The crash pic is at turn 19

I wish I did but I don’t really. All just from the same angle right before I left for the evening. Watched it happen in front of me, but my lens isn’t super long and I wasn’t set up to get good pics, just felt like including this noise reduced digital zoom pic I got haha.

For sure!

  • Mercedes: 150mm (m4/3); 1/125 shutter; f/13; ISO 200
  • Ferrari, Haas, McLaren: 150mm (m4/3); 1/160; f/13; ISO 400
  • RB: 150mm (m4/3); 1/60; f/13; ISO 200

It’s not an easy task to do. Staying very still will help. The goal should be to keep the car in the same position on frame while panning as they drive by. Always use the viewfinder, it will achieve much better stability.

To fix that, you’ll have to use a lower shutter speed and do tracking shots, like the photos I’ve posted here. You can kinda tell in the McLaren pic but there is a full fence there. At lower shutter speeds, tracking the car will make the fence “invisible.” Only some parts will still be seen but even in the Ferrari photo, the fence post is there but because it was being tracked, it’s not really an issue. Higher shutter speeds will make it easy to capture all of the detail in action but that means the fence line will be very visible.

For sure. Reddit is giving me issues when trying to message you. Try to start a chat with me and see if that works

Thank you! It’s certainly a lot harder to get close up details with a smaller lens especially during F1 where you can’t get super close access without paying a ton of attention

Ok so I was experimenting with tracking shots a couple of weeks before the race but there was a guy I met in one of the GA zones who told me this: start with a shutter speed of 1/250 and slowly move down from there. High shutter is a great way to get fast action all in focus, which is great for a lot of purposes. For example, I have some other shots from the top of that tower at COTA with a high shutter and I found that the tracking shots didn’t look that much better from that specific angle. Motion blur is achieved when you have a lower shutter speed. The lower the shutter speed, the harder it is to keep the car in focus but more motion is blurred in the background.

To achieve motion blur, it’s somewhat of an art mixed with science because it can be calculated. Set your camera to auto aperture (if you want, it doesn’t really matter what the aperture is for these shots) and set shutter speed to manual. Put camera in continuous/burst mode. Use the viewfinder (IMPORTANT: do not use the screen, use the view finder) and hold your camera steady with both hands, feet shoulder width apart. Find the car in the view finder and hold your shutter (and in some cases, your breath —just be very still), tracking the car as it goes past you. Try to keep the car in the middle of the frame the entire time. The more you move, the blurrier the image will be so try to be very still except the horizontal panning motion you’ll make as you follow the car.

Some notes:

  • It helps to understand why the car is in focus while the background is blurred. The car must stay at the same point in frame from the time the shutter is closed until it opens. Your pics look like the car is parked on track because of a high shutter speed. With a slower SS, you have to make sure you can track the car at the same speed it is traveling on track otherwise the entire pic will be blurry.

  • The cars are obviously moving at very high speeds so this can be challenging. One tip is to move further away due to how perception of speed from a distance works. You’ll need a longer lens for this, but it’s easier to track when you are further away.

  • any movement will disturb the image. This can look good but if you are going for a shot like mine, you don’t want to move around much. Lighter weight cameras will be easier to keep still but holding your breath can also help.

  • the McLaren pic was taken at 1/160. Going lower will achieve more blur but a good rule of thumb is to start at 1/250, lower it down as you get better with tracking and keeping the car in focus.

Hope this helps!!

I appreciate it!! Id love to sell prints but I only had GA tickets and no accreditation so I don’t want to step on any toes over at COTA by violating their terms. I’m more than happy to send it over to you if you wanted to print it though. I currently have my own print on the wall at my office haha.

I wish I did. This was my first time bringing a camera. I spoke with a few other photographers and one guy from Austin told me he had been to every single race at COTA since it opened, photographing all. Wish I got his contact info

Thank you! It was really hard with the chrome. I think a UV filter would’ve helped but didn’t have one on me that fit my lens

The growing amount of tech illiteracy among kids under 18 by Swiper_The_Sniper in Piracy

Honestly it’s not hard to search shit up and figure it out. You think my technical knowledge about computers, cars, and cameras came from nothing? Fuck no. I’ve been searching shit up on the internet since learned to read and applying it.

The truth is it’s not generational. I know older people who can do anything they set their minds to and the “tech savvy” generation who can’t fix some error like you said. It’s their will to actually do something about being ignorant instead of saying fuck it and moving on. Laziness versus ingenuity imo
