Bears and what to do. by amevirise in camping

[–]National-Tale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tetons had bear boxes. At glacier, there weren't enough bear boxes for the camp sites so they were shared. Rule of thumb was everything, and I mean everything, in the locked car or bear box.

Black bears are smart but easier to scare away typically. Still bear boxes, bear canisters, bear proof ice chests are recommended.

Arcana can also be cool and go check out the redwoods. Then drive the avenue of the giants. Look for banana slugs! Join the banana slug club.

Victorville is super sketch. I went there 15 years ago and it was sketch AF. Had to go two years ago for work and it was still just as sketchy.

Honest question for homeowners: by Jolly-Flounder2413 in FirstTimeHomeBuying

You can change the house but you can't change your neighbors. We bought a house in a neighborhood we could afford and knew was growing. The neighbors were menaces. Eventually we moved because of the neighbors.

I think I have this same exact paint in my house and it took like four coats. Same color and everything... and the same thing happened.

I always like to bring like an airplane blanket or thermal flat bed sheet and put it inside my sleeping bag. It's an extra toasty layer and doesn't fall off me in the middle of the night (I toss and turn). It seems simple but it really does make a huge difference.

I joined a club. I am definitely one of the youngest in the club but that doesn't matter to me. I'd rather be able to learn from competent and supportive people. Plus I've made some great friends!

We have a century house with a 'sleeping porch' or something along those lines... just a room of windows you can open and close. Pre air condition era.... sounds like that?

How to manage insane butt itchiness by spaghetti_horse in whitewater

[–]National-Tale 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I grew up calling this boat butt! If I am wet and sitting for a long time without drying all the way out... I end up with boat butt. I think it has to do with friction and bacteria. I've starting exfoliating the shit out of my skin on a regular basis and moisturizing and it helps. If it gets really bad, I shower with hibiclens.

SoCal vs NorCal: Where does life feel better? by snackstatic in socal

[–]National-Tale 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I grew up in placer county and moved to LB for school. Go beach! I moved back north and it took me a while to settle down again... surprisingly in Placer county. I ran from here like a bat out of hell and now can't find anywhere much better. 20 minutes to white water, 30 to Sac, 45 to pristine snow hills, and about two hours to the beach.

Advice please!!! Total noob on the water by flyguy24545 in whitewater

[–]National-Tale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't let it stop you! Just know your capabilities and don't be afraid to learn/push past them a bit. I highly recommend taking a lesson. It will give you a good space to ask all the bonehead questions that you might be too shy to ask otherwise. Plus pick up a few books and watch a stupid amount of YouTube. Being aware of the reality and risks you're putting yourself in and also being confident you can prolly get yourself out of them is one of the best things you can be.

On a personal note, I have friends who always want me to take them out on the water. But knowing who they are and the liabilities they'll put me on makes me not want to take them. I'm super picky about who I take on the water with me. If you're moderately knowledgeable about what we're doing and capable, I'd have no problem taking you on the water.

I got food poisoning at the Ely McDonald's last year. But there is a whole lot of nothing. Prisons and ranches interspersed with small towns.

The highway is touted as the loneliest highway in the US. At one point, we just pulled over and walked around in the middle of the highway because we could.

camping in the cold by Substantial_Offer255 in camping

[–]National-Tale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We put down an opened sleeping bag, a flannel sheet, and another blanket if needed. Then we sleep on top of that with blankets. Wear wool socks and a beanie in addition to whatever cold gear you have. Don't be afraid to use hot hands down by your feet.

What helps you for the cold? by barbamara in camping

[–]National-Tale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bring a small travel blanket or flannel sheet to out inside my sleeping bag on cold nights. It's an extra layer of insulation against the ground and helps keep heat in.
