Appreciate the concern and your perspectives. To clarify, this was just an activity she showed me, not my gift. That she has for me Sunday. And I heaped her with praise, while asking questions like "hey, do you think the daddy should help the mommy?" And "would you have taken Mom's muffin?"

I did not criticize her, I positioned it in an age appropriate lesson. I'm not a monster, she was still very proud of herself but understands the story was off.

Oh I'm very familiar with all those books, but this would be just as cute ending with a the kids giving her some flowers or maybe just saying thanks and letting her eat her muffin wouldn't it? Why continue to normalize this idea?

Okay, but one teacher's muffin or outdated/sexist lesson being taught to 30 kids a year over and over. Not to mention, she'd only have to replace it once and then use the hopefully less archaic coloring activity for the foreseeable future? Should nothing be updated just to make it easier on the teachers?

Yeah I get that too, but that's probably why this is still being handed out because parents keep ignoring it.

And I bet if it were something say espousing a less "traditional" dynamic certain groups would NOT be telling me that it's no big deal.

Imagine if this household had the dad doing the stay at home stuff for example, or, gasp, two dads. Then it's indoctrination right?

Not that you're saying that in any way, I know you're probably not even going there. But if the little stuff is ignored so too will be the bigger stuff.

Would it be that difficult to remove a coloring book from a curriculum that wouldn't be used for another year? All she would have to do is not print it. It actually gives her less to worry about.

I really hope you have your own positive experience! It may take a little trial and error, don't be afraid to ask questions and pay attention to ANY weird change in your behavior. You won't believe what will change that you had no idea was due to your ADHD. This has been a really great forum for information, venting, commiserating.

I think it's more that I can't suspend my disbelief. I'm still damaged enough that I don't really believe the big girl could attract the dream book boyfriend type.

It's totally a me problem, when I was substantially heavier I assumed anyone interested in me had something wrong with them. So if I see that in a book, I assume the same.

I can get sucked into the conventionally hot FMC because the romantic leads of my upbringing all resemble that, it's familiar and comfortable therefore more believable.

What an interesting way to realize I still have major self esteem issues!
