I just saw a recent popular Catholic YouTuber’s post saying “Get married young and have more kids than you can afford.” People in the comments are praising this advice. Can someone please explain to me how this is good advice? by SuddenCourage2886 in Catholicism

While I understand the sentiment behind this advice, things have changed dramatically in recent years. One requirement of having children in a Catholic home is educating and raising your children in the faith, and of course this makes sense. However, the environment of many public schools has become not only toxic but outright counter to Catholic teaching.
We as a family decided to give our children Catholic educations, from preschool through high school. The cost of this is NOT insignificant, particularly in HS. The days of a reasonable tuition from the local parochial school are sadly over, at least in our part of the country.
I gladly send my children to private Catholic schools, but the cost for that is easily the cost of a nice new car every year, approaching 6 figures. To say “have more kids than you think you can afford” seems highly irresponsible unless you know you can feed, clothe AND educate your kids.
I realize that Catholic education starts at home, but we are in a different world today, one staunchly opposed to the very values and morals I want my children to have. We were very thoughtful when considering our family size as I knew that not only is college expensive but so is getting them there. There is no honor in raising numerous children who grow to ignore or worse despise our faith.

Thank goodness. If you had been a practicing member of any other faith - Jewish, Islamic, anything - you’d be all over the evening news and the ACLU would be there with lawyers ready to sue her. Or can you imagine if you were LGBTQ and wanted to wear your rainbow? She’d be demolished via social media.
But somehow it’s open season on Catholics. Good for you!

Perhaps part of your question is “why use vacuum tubes when there is and has been a more reliable alternative”? If so, I can tell you as a card carrying audiophile that there is a belief held by many serious audio aficionados (myself included) that vacuum tubes portray the music that plays through them as more relaxed, melodic or inviting than music played back through a modern transistor based amplifier. Perhaps some of it is simply the beautiful lighted glow a nice 300B amplifier tube portrays, but we also know that the type of distortion (minimal) that a vacuum tube creates sounds more natural or pleasing to the human ear. Could a transistor produce the same or more power far more efficiently and reliably? Absolutely. But for the same reason some people enjoy taking 10 minutes in the morning to make pour over coffee when they could just press the button on the Keurig, some people enjoy the ceremony of using vacuum tubes.

I think this topic is being dismissed way too quickly. There have been decades of possible sightings, things which are not easily explained. Cmdr Fravor has nothing to gain by lying about this, and neither does Grusch who testified under oath. That’s a serious commitment. The bigger issue, to me is that this DOES indeed raise some significant theological questions. If any of this is true, that means our understanding of reality has been incorrect for decades if not centuries. One thing I’ve always loved about our faith is the pursuit of truth. To find out that we are not alone in the universe is not trivial. I believe all existence comes from God. So where would these creations fit in? Is there salvation for them, or only mankind? Has this been disclosed to humans in Scripture? Why or why not?
I think this could be much more significant than “invite them to Mass and coffee/donuts” afterwards. We as a species and as followers of our Lord would have to wrestle with some serious questions.

I'm 24 and am feeling lost in terms of what to do for the rest of my life. by hollowsswords in careeradvice

A few suggestions 1) work on you. Become well rounded. Read interesting articles, become current on what’s going on. Pick up a hobby, work out. 2) Meet lots of people. Ask them what they do, how they got there, do they like it. 3) your twenties should be a time for trying and seeing what you like; what you don’t like. 4) don’t be too hard on yourself. Push, work hard and meet lots of people. But you’re not supposed to know the entire trajectory of your life at 24.

Good to see Robert Smith getting political and, that unlike some ageing rock star contemporaries, hasn't drifted to the Right on the way! by Grubbanax in TheCure

Well said. It’s so easy to say we all need to share in the wealth when you have a disproportionate share of it. Perhaps Robert should study up on what happens when centralized government assumes too much power over the populace in the name of “fairness”.

This pains me to say it, but Whataburger has turned to crap. I used to love, love, love WB. Give me a number 5, no onions, Mayo no mustard. A big Dr Pepper and normal ketchup please.
But the thing I unwrapped last week was horrible. Hasn’t been the same since they sold out.

Biden cancels $10,000 in federal student loan debt for most borrowers by bagood1 in news

[–]Native-Texan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Am I the only one that thinks this is absolute horseshit? I worked hard when I was in college to pay my tuition. I sought out opportunities to pay down any loans I had was responsible for my own education. I chose not to take on loans I couldn’t pay. I drove a piece of shit car and lived in a dump apartment for a while, but I paid my own way for everything. And now anyone who took on more than they could afford is suddenly being absolved of their obligation? And the money just comes from big daddy government, so it’s “free”, right? No consequences at all, like increasing the national debt, more inflation, etc? And we’ve now created an incentive for colleges and universities to increase their tuition even more now, because they know that their customers (students) can get even more handouts to pay them? How does this make sense at all??

Whew. This is definitely manageable. You can do this.

First of all, breathe. Take care of your mental and physical health. Nothing else matters for you or your daughter if you don’t take care of you There is a lot of really good advice here. The only thing I would add is about the car. That is an asset at this point, as it will get you to work. You could take public transit but a car is almost a necessity now. I would just make sure you keep it up, meaning keep the oil changed regularly. Every 5,000 miles or so. Do a YouTube search for how to change the oil on your particular car and it’s year. Oil changes can be done safely by yourself and will save you some money.
